The dimensions of the device are determined by the diagonal of the display and the small frame around it. The weight and thickness have increased slightly compared to the first Tab 10.1, but the appearance has changed noticeably - the tablet no longer looks like an iPad. Unlike its monolithic metal competitor, the Korean product is housed in a plastic prefab body. The matte gray material of the "back" turns into a glossy dark gray edging of the case and a black bezel. The quality of the plastic is high, but it's still not unibody aluminum. In addition, in our test sample with the assembly, not everything was smooth: the upper corners of the front panel protective screen in our case had a gap or simply peeled off. However, perhaps this is a feature of a particular specimen or the batch that was brought for the press. Just in case, I went into the store, turned the demo sample in my hands - and it was assembled well. In general, check when buying.

Describing the structural elements, we will bind the "coordinate axis" based on the location of the logos, that is, in landscape orientation. Let's start by tradition with the front panel: there is a front camera with a modest 0.3 MP matrix above the screen. In addition, on both sides of the display, we can see the metal mesh of the speakers. There are no keys on the front: neither touch nor mechanical - all manipulations are performed through the display.

Getting acquainted with Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, you begin to understand that the company actually produces high-quality products, although not without some drawbacks. So, on board the tablet has a 2-core processor with 1000 MHz per core, in general, this will be enough to run most not the most demanding applications. 1 GB of RAM, alas, is not enough, although it will be just right for surfing the Internet and watching videos. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has a modern appearance and fits perfectly in the hands, while the screen reproduces the color gamut quite well, and the viewing angles are wide. Regarding the battery, it lasts for a full day, while the device can be used in a fairly loaded mode. The build quality is good - nothing creaks or falls off. Also, I was pleased with the large number of pre-installed software, which I don't want to remove right away, in general, Samsung is famous for its software. Summing up the intermediate result, I would like to say that the tablet is quite versatile and is popular with a wide range of people. Recommended for review

Introduction

Last year, the South Korean company introduced to the market two models of tablets based on the Android operating system from the Galaxy line - Tab 8.9 and Tab 10.1. Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 2 10.1 were shown this year. At the presentation of tablets, almost all journalists were interested in the main differences between "old" devices from "new" ones. I think the same question will arise among potential buyers of Samsung products. Therefore, I will try to briefly explain the difference between Tab 10.1 and Tab 2 10.1.

Firstly, in order not to conflict with Apple once again, Samsung slightly changed the design: this time, speakers appeared on the front panel, on the right and left. Secondly, the "second" Tab got a slot for a memory card, which was clearly lacking in the previous model. Third, instead of a chipset from NVIDIA, they installed a chipset from Texas Instruments - from my point of view, the solution is correct. Fourth, both Tab 2 7.0 and Tab 2 10.1 are able to make calls out of the box. What I didn't like was the lack of autofocus on the camera. "First Tab" with Wi-Fi costs from 16,000 rubles, with 3G - from 20,000 rubles. "Second Tab" with Wi-Fi - 15,000 rubles, with 3G - 20,000 rubles.

I think that whatever one may say, the new models look a little more advantageous, if only because of the slightly lower price and the presence of a microSD slot.

Design, dimensions, controls

Unlike previous version, which looked a lot like an "apple" gadget, the appearance of the front side of "Taba" 2 was slightly altered: now a thin semi-gloss strip of dark gray runs along the edge, and on the sides there are speakers covered with a metal mesh. The back is made of matte light gray plastic.

Tab dimensions - 256x175x8.6 mm, and weight 565 grams; Tab 2 is 256x175x9.7 mm and weighs 588. As you can see, the new product has become a little thicker and heavier. It is possible that this is due to the installation of two speakers on the front. For example, the dimensions of the iPad3 are 241x185x9.4 mm, and the weight is 662 grams.

The build quality, as always, is on top: nothing backlash, no creaks, the back cover does not bend. Since the materials are generally non-staining, fingerprints and other marks only remain on the screen and are relatively easy to wipe off. Unfortunately, I have not yet noticed any covers among the accessories for the P5100, since it will most likely not fit from the P7500 - there are no cutouts for the speakers.

The front panel houses the front camera and light sensor. The latter responds quickly and smoothly adjusts the brightness level of the screen backlight. The power button, volume rocker, microSD slot, standard 3.5 mm audio output and a slot for a regular SIM card are located on the top end. At the bottom - a microphone and a proprietary Samsung connector. There is a camera on the back of the device.

Display

The diagonal of the screen is 10.1 inches (physical size 217x127 mm), the resolution is the same as on Tab 10.1 - 1280x800 pixels (150 pixels per inch), displays 16 million color shades, matrix type - PLS-LCD (one of the varieties of IPS-matrices - Plane to Line Switching), type of sensor - capacitive with support for up to 10 simultaneous touches. The sensitivity of the touch layer is excellent. The screen is virtually scratch-resistant thanks to its tempered glass (not Gorilla Glass) coating.

The viewing angles are maximum, but when the P5100 is tilted, the image takes on a slight purple tint and the brightness drops slightly. It can be adjusted either manually or switched to automatic mode, as there is a light sensor on the front of the tablet. It is high, but somewhat inferior to the Apple tablet. The brightness control range is large: you can set it very low, at which it is comfortable to watch a movie or read a book at night.

Unlike previous models, in the Tab 2 10.1 settings there is no "Screen Mode" item. But there is a choice of style and font size (small, small, regular, large, huge).

The display fades in the sun by about 50%.

Battery

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is equipped with a 7000 mAh lithium polymer battery. The manufacturer claims that a full charge should last up to 10 hours of talk time and up to 2000 hours of standby time. These numbers are close to what I got in practice. For example, when playing movies at maximum brightness and outputting sound to headphones, the battery lasted for 7 hours. In general, the tablet's battery life is quite good: in the "normal" use mode (automatic brightness of the backlight, 3G Internet about 3 hours and the same amount of Wi-Fi, watching an hour and a half movie and two hours of listening to music on the speakers, as well as photographing about one hour) The P5100 worked for almost 8 hours. Even under maximum load (high brightness of the backlight, games, performance tests, etc.) the battery ran out after 6.5 hours.

The tablet does not charge from USB (a red cross is drawn on the battery indicator icon), and this is logically understandable: the huge battery capacity can be "filled" with a small current all day, and it will take about 3.5 hours from the mains.

There are several items in the energy saving section:

  • CPU. Limit maximum performance
  • Screen. Use low power for the screen
  • Background color. Change background color in e-mail

Below is a brief description of each item. For a couple of weeks of using the tablet in this mode, I found out that there is not much difference between the enabled and disabled power saving function.

Communication capabilities

The tablet works in 2G (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) and 3G networks (HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100). HSDPA + speeds up to 21 Mbps, HSUPA up to 5.76 Mbps. It is now possible to make calls out of the box. Sound can be transferred to a wireless headset.

A complete "gentleman's" set is available: Bluetooth version 3.0 with support for the A2DP stereo profile, Wi-Fi standards a / b / g / n (Dual-band) with the ability to "distribute" the Internet (access point "Wi-Fi Hotspot") and USB 2.0 (proprietary connector).

For additional accessories such as a USB hub, keyboard or mouse, special adapters are sold. Yes, not very convenient, but Samsung, alas, followed in Apple's footsteps.

During the entire testing period, there were no problems with networks.

Memory and memory card

The device has 1 GB random access memory, about 700 MB are available, of which about 400 MB are free. Internal Flash memory - 16 GB (only 4.6 GB is displayed in the settings). The write speed reaches 15 MB / s. There is a slot for a microSD memory card (up to 32 GB).

Camera

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 has two camera modules: front - 0.3 MP with a large depth of field, main - 3.2 MP without autofocus and flash. Let me remind you that in the previous model, the front camera was 2 MP, the main one had autofocus, and there was also an LED backlight.

The main camera is not bad. Maximum resolution up to 2048x1536 pixels. The color reproduction is natural, the white balance is almost perfect, the picture clarity is satisfactory. The photographed text from A4 sheet can be made out.

Movies are recorded in 720p (1280x720 pixels) resolution at 30 frames per second.

Photo mode interface: on the right - switching photo / video, activating the shutter, entering the gallery; on the left - switch to the front camera, shooting mode (one shot, smile shot, panorama), timer (off, 2 - 10 seconds), brightness (from -2 to +2), settings. Performance

This is where the main changes took place. Samsung has abandoned the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset and installed a chipset from the American company Texas Instruments - OMAP 4430. The technical process is 45 nm, the CPU instruction set is ARMv7, and the graphics accelerator is PowerVR SGX540. Processor - Dual core Cortex-A9 with clock frequency 1 GHz. The chipset belongs to the fourth generation OMAP, which contains a hardware multimedia accelerator IVA3 with programmable DSP, which allows encoding / decoding 1080p Full HD video.

Software platform

The tablet works on one of the last android versions ICS - 4.0.4. The firmware version is P5100XXLE3, the kernel version is 3.0.8-583334-user, the build number is IMM76D.P5100XXBLE3. You can familiarize yourself with Google Android Ice Cream Sandwich in more detail. As a shell design, Samsung's own TouchWIZ is used. It must be said that the UI has not yet been "cured" of slight slowdowns while flipping through virtual screens. Frankly speaking, it is no longer funny - it has been going on since the first versions of TouchViz on tablets, and they still cannot fix the obvious bug. Interestingly, any other shell behaves perfectly, be it Yandex.Shell or Go launcher.

Navigation

The tablet is equipped with a GPS navigator. Its characteristics are the same as those of most "pills". For all the time of working with him, there were no problems. “Addresses”, “Maps”, “Locator” and “Navigator” are installed as applications for joint operation with GPS.

Messages and calls

You can send messages and make calls from your device in the same way as from a regular smartphone. A standard Samsung keyboard is used to enter text. The language is switched by pressing the globe icon. Voice and handwriting inputs are available. The keyboard has a separate button for launching the clipboard.

The dialer is huge, it appears from the bottom when the tablet is in vertical position and to the right when it is landscape. The telephone part contains several tabs: "Keypad", "Journal", "Favorites" and "Contacts". Almost all items contain the same functions as in the "old tablets". By the way, the slot for the SIM-card is ordinary, i.e. not currently fashionable microSIM. There is a vibration signal.

I really like the tablet, I bought myself about a week ago. I chose between the new iPad and Tab. I chose Samsung, because it supports flash, a lot of video formats (including avi), bluetooth is normally organized here, unlike Aypada: Yes, and the camera is also good. Movies are convenient to watch (well, this is most likely on all tablets with such a diagonal and resolution). Yes, I almost forgot, you can still insert a USB flash drive into the tablet, but not in the Aypad (this, of course, not everyone needs, but for me it is desirable). + You can put a SIM card (well, that's understandable, I bought a model with 3g). good, juicy colors, especially when you watch movies in high quality. The sound is good, loud, pleases the presence of a video editor, photo editor, the presence of an equalizer. It's also cool that there is a function to select the speed of music playback. Well, there is still

I haven't found any shortcomings yet, I hope there won't be any. :) Although, there is one drawback, but this is not a drawback of the device, but a lack of equipment - too short a usb cable, when I connect it to a computer, I have to put the tablet on the computer table, that is, it takes up space and interferes with working with a mouse and keyboard the disadvantage pales against the background of the merits.

If we talk about shortcomings, then most likely they are associated with the system, and not with the tablet, that is, the problems of Android. Therefore, it is not appropriate to write about them here.
The only drawback in my opinion is the lack of a full-fledged USB port and an unsuccessfully located universal port (below). For example; it is very inconvenient to use the tablet while it is charging or with a USB adapter connected to it, which, by the way, is purchased separately.

Barely noticeable slowdowns with prolonged use

Last year's Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 was a pretty successful model, selling well compared to other Android tablets. In fact, he had one significant drawback - the high price. It is not surprising that at the end of 2011 the device could no longer compete with much cheaper and at the same time quite high-quality new products (for example, the Amazon Kindle Fire).

In the winter of 2012, the Korean manufacturer announced the next generation Galaxy Tab. At first glance, we see only a slightly modified Galaxy Tab 10.1 sample of 2011, but sold at a lower price. Whether the advantages of the novelty are limited only by the democratic price in comparison with its predecessor, let's see in this review.

Samsung has released two Galaxy Tab 2 tablets - with 7 ″ and 10.1 ″ displays. Each of them is available in modifications only with the Wi-Fi module, as well as with Wi-Fi and 3G. We tested Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with only one wireless module.

Appearance

If not for a pair of long speakers on the front panel, the new product could easily be confused with its predecessor. Other differences are noticeable if you look a little more closely. These include, for example, lateral "Influxes" made of gray plastic, the absence of a flash next to the main camera, a slightly changed design of the lid - the insert in the upper part is now not so pronounced and the photo module eye is located under it, and not on the insert itself, as was the case with the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

The tablet is still completely plastic, but the texture of the material has changed. If earlier it was not a very practical gloss, now the coating is matte, much more resistant to prints. because of "Metal" shade it may seem that the cover is made of metal, but in fact it is plastic - you just need to take the device in your hands to understand this.

All hardware control buttons are concentrated on the top (if you hold the tablet in landscape orientation) end. There is a power button and a double volume rocker. The latter, by the way, is made in the form of a one-piece button, so it is not always convenient to decrease or increase the volume of the sound - to be sure you have to press on the very edge (left or right) of the keys. To the right is a microSD memory card slot hidden behind a plastic flap and a 3.5mm audio jack. In the 3G version, there is also a SIM slot on the top end.
Below is a microphone and a wide proprietary connector. We can also mention the camera for video calls, located above the screen. That's all, the design of the tablet is laconic, as, however, and most other Android-brothers.

In terms of dimensions, the novelty is almost a complete copy of the first Galaxy Tab 10.1. The successor is perhaps "Got fat" per millimeter (up to 9.7 mm) and is heavier by less than 20 grams (583 g). When using a tablet, these changes are not felt, and the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is still comfortable to work with due to its thinness and acceptable weight.

The assembly of the model could be called flawless, if not for one "but"... The fact is that the device that got to the tests in the upper left corner slightly moved away from the case protective glass display. Surely this is a problem of a particular instance; commercial samples of Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 should not have such a defect. Otherwise, there are no complaints about the tablet: the buttons are pressed moderately tightly, the microSD port cover sits tightly, the non-removable cover does not play.

Display

The novelty is equipped with a 10.1 ″ display with a resolution of 1280 × 800 pixels. The previous generation tablet screen had exactly the same characteristics. The manufacturer specified that the matrix is \u200b\u200bmanufactured using PLS (Plane-to-Line Switching) technology. In fact, this is a less expensive alternative to IPS, so its main advantages are high viewing angles and good, natural color reproduction. They say the PLS has a lower contrast ratio, but in practice you can't say that the screen lacks contrast.

Overall, the display experience is about the same as that of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The still strangely working automatic backlight has even been inherited: when the corresponding option is activated, the brightness is objectively not enough. So it's best to set the backlight level to maximum - then the information is well read both indoors and in the sun.

It makes no sense to dwell on the camera in detail, but it is worth saying a few words about it. For some reason, Samsung decided to install a very modest 3-megapixel photo module in the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and without autofocus and flash. The camera of last year's model also did not differ in special quality, but at least it had autofocus and a flash. Apparently, the developer was guided by the consideration that there will be very few people willing to take pictures using a tablet.

Interface, functionality

The main difference between the new item and its predecessor is a new version operating system from Google. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 runs Android 4.0.3, while "Old man" was content with Honeycomb.

It makes no sense to dwell on the Ice Cream Sandwich interface in detail, we examined its main elements in aSUS review Eee Pad Transformer Prime. You can only note the convenient screenshot button located in the lower left corner next to the virtual keys "Back home" and "Multitasking"... If you click on it, the system will take a screenshot and open it for editing in the photo editor. At the bottom of each of the desktops there is a panel with icons of applications for quick launch... The number and set of programs can be changed, and the panel can be hidden by clicking on the arrow.

As part of the proprietary TouchWiz interface, Samsung offers a set of wallpapers. Note that setting an animated image as a background negatively affects the speed of the UI - the shell begins to slow down noticeably, which is practically not observed with ordinary wallpapers.

Traditionally for mobile devices The Korean manufacturer has several branded and third-party widgets and applications in the tablet. One of the most useful (especially considering the large screen) is the Polaris Office program. With proper skill, it is quite possible to type texts in it - even if not as fast as on a computer with a full-fledged keyboard, but if necessary, the application can come in handy. For example, the news was written with Polaris Office without much difficulty.

The built-in photo editor, S Memo notes and S Planner notes are also interesting - useful and multifunctional for devices of this kind.

Performance and battery

The novelty is built on a TI OMAP4430 dual-core processor, clocked at 1 GHz. IN Arsenal the tablet also houses a PowerVR SGX 540 graphics accelerator and 1 GB of RAM. Testing passed samsung model Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 with 16GB storage.

Last year's Galaxy Tab was also based on a dual-core chip, but back then it was Nvidia Tegra 2. Did the hardware change affect performance a lot? Judging by the results in benchmarks, the performance of the new product remained at the level of its predecessor: in some galaxy tests Tab 2 10.1 is slightly faster, in others it is a couple of points behind.

In any case, the performance of the tablet is sufficient for everyday tasks. Videos in Full HD resolution, modern 3D games - all this device successfully "Digests"... Noticeable slowdowns appear only when installing the above-mentioned animated wallpaper. However, even without them, the interface can sometimes "Think" for a split second.

The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 is equipped with a 7000 mAh battery. The exact same battery was installed in the first Galaxy Tab 10.1. Maybe changing the hardware platform somehow affected the power consumption of the tablet? With continuous playback of a video in Full HD resolution, with maximum screen brightness and Wi-Fi turned off, a single charge lasted almost six and a half hours. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 demonstrated approximately the same result.

Thus, in terms of performance and battery life between "Old" and new tablets - absolute parity, even despite different chips.

Conclusion

The closer you get to know the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the more often you remember the saying that everything new is well forgotten old. The tablet of the 2011 sample can hardly be called old, but over the year the situation on the market for such devices has changed markedly. Samsung has had to adapt to new rules of the game, and the updated Galaxy Tab is a product that plays by these rules.

In fact, the considered model is not much different from its predecessor: the same technical characteristics (changing the hardware platform did not affect the performance and capabilities of the device in any way), identical battery life. Unless the new product received a worse camera, but this was to some extent compensated by the installation of good speakers - loud and clear sound comes from them.

The main and in fact the only advantage of the tablet is its relatively low price. The first Galaxy Tab 10.1 cost about $ 1000 at the start, while the second generation is sold for almost half the price. In this case, the user receives a fresh operating system and a slightly updated design. Is it worth it to put a number in the device name for this? "2", for potential buyers to decide. Samsung decided it was worth it.
