Almost all films on this site have 2 audio tracks, English and Russian. If you're lucky, you can watch movies online on your gadget. There will be English and subtitles (worth the 1st track). The dubbing process is to extract the existing audio track from the video clip to delete it and replace it with your own. This can be done in a variety of ways. Some methods are used to replace background music or sounds to add new sounds. Many YouTube videos use dubbing to overlay a new voice track into an existing video segment, such as commercials. Some musicians use dubbing in a different way, they replace the low-quality sound of a live performance with a better one or a different version of the sound.

The dubbing process is fairly easy to do in iMovie for macOS, but it can get complicated depending on how well you need to get the job done.

Removing and replacing audio in iMovie

First, you need to delete the old audio track in the video clip for this you need to create a project and drag your video clip there, which already includes the audio track. In the iMovie app on your Mac, create a new project by clicking on the + icon in the upper right corner. After that, in your project library, find the folder containing the video you want to use or do a search in your library. Find a video clip and then drag it to the iMovie timeline tab.

Now select this clip and then from the menu bar, choose the "Modify" command. Click on "Detach Audio" from this menu. (Alternatively, you can simply right-click a clip and select that command there, as in the screenshot.) Note that iMovie has split this clip into two independent files: audio and video, so you can freely edit and manipulate them separately.

After that, you can very simply delete the original audio track and drag your own there. Click on an audio track in iMovie and then Delete on your keyboard. Then you can use the audio library of the iMovie application to drag a new one there sound file or import your own file from Finder.

Drag the new sound file to the bottom panel below the video clip and make sure it is aligned properly to avoid pauses. Play the entire clip in the iMovie app and you now have a new video clip with a new audio track.

Combining new audiotracks with the previous audio track in iMovie

This tactic is applied to different needs. Merging a new audio track with a previous one isn't just dragging and dropping a new audio track. Correct alignment of the two audio files will help ensure that all audio tracks sound right and maintain consistency and consistency.

For example, let's say you recorded a video of you singing a song. In general, everything sounds good, except for a small snippet. Therefore, you recorded another take, in which you fixed all the mistakes that took place in the first take. Using the replacement process, you insert into the video clip only that part of the audio track that fits exactly with the poor quality fragment and now the entire audio track sounds great. Thus, you have fixed all your mistakes in the sound design of the video clip.

The alignment process requires special, proper alignment of both audio tracks plus proper alignment with the video sequence so that your mouth movements align correctly with the audio track.

As in the previous method, first drag your video clip into a new project, and then right-click on the timeline to select an audio track.

Note the two parallel audio tracks for one video.

Now, instead of deleting the audio track, you need to save it. Then you need to find either another video clip with soundtrack, or just a separate audio file that you need to use in the first video. Most likely, both tracks will be the same in terms of sound duration, but with slight variations in sound design. If you drag a full-fledged video clip onto the timeline, you must first select the audio track in it, and then delete the video component. If it's just audio, all you have to do is drag and drop the audio file onto the timeline.

Place the new audio track under the old audio track. Pay attention to the similarity of the sound waves so that you know exactly where and how to place the new audio clip. Both audio clips should match each other as closely as possible and have only minimal differences.

Determine where you want to stop the sound of the first sound track and where you want to sound the second sound track. Then, you need to split both clips at the same point in the timeline. Do this by holding down the Shift key and selecting both audio tracks, then position the cursor at the split point. Click the Edit button in the menu bar and select the Split Clip button. (Or press Command + B.).

Determine the second split point on the timeline in the same way. You may need to play the audio track several times to determine the time interval that we want to replace. Choose the split area on the track where it is easiest to mix audio tracks, that is, the joints should fall on the area of \u200b\u200bthe minimum audio level. Now, you should have two audio files, each with two timeline separators.

Delete the highlighted time slot in the upper audio track, and then drag the highlighted time slot of the second audio track from the lower file into the upper audio file. For best results, you need to align the audio tracks as closely as possible.

You may need to change the sound parameters and adjust the audio clips to make them sound right, so listen to them several times. After achieving the desired effect, you can remove any unnecessary audio fragment from the second audio track.

It would seem that everything is there, but we want to do something in our own way, in order to see what happens. If you want to connect an audio file to any movie or clip, you shouldn't think that it is available only to professionals. Our step-by-step instruction will tell you how you can change any audio track yourself.

  • Attach the audio file of the same name (* .mp3; * .wav; * .aac, etc.) into the folder with the video file (* .avi; * .mov; * .mpg, etc.). If you do not have an audio file of the same name, then you need to create it. The sound should be named the same as the video. Copy these two files to the same folder. Even a fairly general beginning, the continuation in the name of the files can be different. For example: movie.avi

As you know, files with the extension mkv is a special multimedia container for storing video, audio paths and subtitles. She is Matryoshka. Below will be described how to work with audio tracks correctly.

It often happens that there are several audio paths and subtitles in a container, some of which are not needed. For example, roads with an unfamiliar language or several Russians. Or another option, when the sound road has the format dts, which is not always reproduced by "iron" players. It can be recoded to ac3.

I will describe the most optimal, in my opinion, actions for performing these tasks.
    You only need two programs.
The first one is Mkvtoolnix for working with mkv containers.
The second - Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate... Besides coding dts in ac3 has many other useful features.

Take the once popular Slum Saints as an example.
Launch mkvmerge GUI from the kit Mkvtoolnix
Choosing a movie and getting something like this:

In addition to the video and subtitles, the container contains four more roads. English, two Russians and a road by Goblin. Here she is just needed. Remove the checkboxes from unnecessary elements, select the final path and the name of the reassembled container and click Start muxing.

After mixing is complete, the new container looks like this. Video and one audio track.

Now it can be recoded into ac3.
Launch Xilisoft Video Converter Ultimate... Add a file, in the Profiles tab, select ac3 and the path to save. Also on the right side of the program, you can change the settings for the encoded track.
We press the red button at the top and wait.

It turned out to be a separate track ac3... Now you need to replace the track with the extension with it dts... To do this, open the mkvmerge GUI again, select the file mkv with one track dts and add a track with the add button ac3, while from the track dts uncheck the box accordingly.

You ask why all this was needed?
The original file with all tracks weighed 6.56 GB, the final file was 3.78 GB. In addition to the fact that it takes up less space, it can be copied relatively quickly to a USB flash drive and viewed from a device that does not support sound in the format dts (for example, SAMSUNG TVs of the sixth series of 2009, which even the new firmware did not help to learn to read dts).

It is not recommended to use mkvmerge versions higher than 4.0.0. This is especially true for owners of Samsung TVs of 2009 release. (2009 is the B in the model name. For example LE37 B*****) Most reassembled containers refuse to run on the built-in player of the above TVs.

    UPDATE2:

And how to get separate subtitles or an audio track? It's simple. This requires a program MKVExtractGUI... It must be placed in a folder with Mkvtoolnix.

Everything here is intuitively clear: select a file, an output folder and check the boxes necessary to extract the files from the container.
