4. Processor (CPU). All modern smartphones, like computers, have their own "brain", which is technically called a "processor". Of course, I can't say that I was at the very beginning of the development of the era of smartphones, when almost everyone was offline. I got into some kind of development and bought a smartphone out of specific needs and short-term plans. For a long time I had planned to familiarize myself with non-telephones, but before that I could not find a reason. The bottom line was this: while passing the exam in a parallel group, I was able to photograph all the tickets for my 6630, pack them into an archive and send them by mail to a rescuer-solver of problems. On a 2 MP camera without autofocus, it was not the first time that it was possible to remove a ticket so that the content was plus or minus readable. 220 MHz was not so quickly packed into the archive photos. A 32 MB card didn't fit a lot. The set should have included a 64 MB card, but I was thrown. By the way, I still have the first card in my life!

Today I would go into the classroom, take out my iPhone, shoot a couple of perfect photos, send it to anyone by easily configured mail, or even find a service / application that solves all the problems.

The main tasks of the smartphone were: communication in ICQ, perhaps someone remembers such a client as StICQ, which was released for Symbian 7-8; browsing, mainly by smart versions of sites; games popular were bluetooth games like Miner, Bomberman; sometimes mail was used, but we were not yet accustomed to its daily use.

Eh, it's nice to remember again where my geek youth and my passion for gadgets in general began. But still, this, as I said, at that time was already a very productive and functional smartphone. Before him there were Nokia 6600 and many others, but the very first publicly available smartphone in the world was not a gadget from Nokia or Siemens. The very first is considered to be IBM Simon, which will be 22 years old this August.

It weighed half a kilo, the thickness was 4 cm, the smartphone had 1 MB of RAM and the same amount for data, and its processor worked at a frequency of 16 MHz! The battery was barely enough for an hour autonomous work... But what unites it with modern models more than with the same Nokia 6630 - this is a 4.7 ″ touch screen, located vertically! And even if it was monochrome, worked with a stylus and had a small resolution of 160x293 pixels.

It was possible not only to make calls from the device, but also to access the Internet, the maximum access speed was 0.002 Mbps. Of course, there was no talk of installed applications, and even more so about the application store, but some of the pre-installed, familiar to us, were already there: e-mail, organizer, and even a simple game.

Interestingly, the cost of such a smartphone with a two-year contract at the start of sales was 900 bucks! And without a contract - 1100. But, due to small sales (about 50k copies were sold in total), the cost was reduced to 600 dollars. And you know, small sales do not mean that the device was bad, they mean that it was unusual, incomprehensible and, of course, expensive. It was after Simon that both IBM and other manufacturers began to develop improved versions of smartphones.
