Image Resizer- a very valuable and useful free program in Russian for working with images on Windows. It was created so that you can quickly and easily change the resolution of an image or convert it to any other format. Image Resizer has a nice design, ease of use and speed of work.

Anyone can download Image Resizer for free using a direct link on our website. This is the most accessible and functional tool for working with pictures on a computer.

Every computer should have such a program, as often, an inexperienced user simply cannot do without it. That is why this program is presented on our website.

Peculiarities

  • Converting files between different graphic formats;
  • Insert watermarks into the image;
  • Reducing the size of photos for publishing on the Internet or sending by e-mail;
  • Changing the compression strength of the image and resolution;
  • Support for JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF and other files;
  • Support for RAW formats of digital cameras: Canon, Nikon, Minolta;
  • Modifiable options and settings for advanced users.

If you work with photos or pictures of different formats, with the help of Image Resizer for Windows you can easily compress or resize them, for example, in order to send it to your loved ones by e-mail. People who work with website design, as a rule, very often need to compress images as much as possible without visual loss of quality. Image Resizer is a program that allows you to do this.

It also contains "presets" (ready-made settings) for converting images optimized for Ipod, NTSC, Sony PSP, HDTV, DVD FULL HD.

Compressing images is a very important process, as it ultimately saves space on your hard drive, increases website loading speed and saves traffic. But, how to figure out among the many different programs for image optimization, each of which has its own special functionality? Let's take a look at the capabilities of the most popular image compression applications.

RIOT

The program for compressing photos without loss of quality RIOT differs not only in wide functionality, in addition to compressing files, including the ability to resize and convert them to other formats, but also a very user-friendly interface. It is important that this application supports the optimization of several graphic file formats at once.

The main disadvantage of the application is the lack of a Russian-language interface.

Cesium

Another popular photo optimization software is Cesium. The main feature of this application is the high accuracy of the image compression settings. This utility also has a very user-friendly graphical interface. In addition, unlike most programs for optimizing images, the Cesium application is Russified.

At the same time, despite the fact that this program works with several formats of graphic files, it does not support the processing of all popular extensions. For example, Cesium does not work with GIF format.

Light Image Resizer

A fairly powerful program for compressing and optimizing photos is the Light Image Resizer application. This software product, despite its relatively simple appearance, is a serious utility for image processing. Although image compression is the main function of this utility, it also has a number of photo editing tools in its baggage. The program produces cropping, applying effects, reducing the physical size of the image, converting to various formats. The domestic user will like the fact that the Light Image Resizer utility is completely Russified.

This application has no significant drawbacks. Is that to take for a disadvantage the fact that this program is one of the few described in this review, which has a shareware license. That is, you will have to pay for its continued use.

Advanced JPEG Compressor

Unlike previous applications, Advanced JPEG Compressor does not specialize in compressing several types of graphic files, but concentrates on working with one format - JPEG. It is considered one of the best utilities for optimizing files with this extension, providing high compression and compression speed. In addition to this paramount task, the program has the function of editing images, including using a convenient graphic equalizer. It is capable of converting a number of popular image formats to JPEG files. It also converts JPEG images back to BMP format.

But, the official version of this program, unfortunately, is not Russified. In addition, the functionality of the free version, which can be used for a short period, is very curtailed.

PNG Guntlet

A similar version of the previous program, only specializing in compressing images in the PNG format, is the PNGGauntlet utility. Thanks to the built-in tools PNGOUT, OptiPNG, Defl Opt, this program compresses photos of this format very high quality. In addition, it converts a variety of graphic formats to PNG images.

But, unfortunately, the general functionality of this program is rather limited, and it does not have more features, except for those indicated above. In addition, the application is not Russified.

OptiPNG

The OptiPNG application, like the previous one, is also designed to compress images in PNG format. Moreover, it is included as a component in the PNGGauntlet program, but it can be used separately, providing high quality compression of this file type. In addition, it is possible to convert a number of graphic formats to PNG format.

But it is worth noting that a significant disadvantage of this program is the lack of a graphical interface, since it works through the command line console.

Jpegoptim

The Jpegoptim utility, which also works from the command line console, and does not have a graphical interface, is the analogue of OptiPNG, only intended for processing files in the JPEG format. But, despite this, it is considered one of the best in terms of compression of JPEG images, and the speed of working with them.

But, unlike OptiPNG, this application does not have the ability to convert images of other formats into the format in which it specializes (JPEG), that is, it is even more functionally limited.

FileOptimizer

Unlike the previous program, FileOptimizer does not focus on working with just one file type. Moreover, it is capable of compressing not only images, but also video, audio, documents, programs, etc. The list of file formats that FileOptimizer can optimize is overwhelming. But, despite its "omnivorous", the program is very easy to use.

At the same time, it should be noted that a side effect of the versatility of this program is its relatively weak ability to work with files of graphic formats. For example, unlike most programs for compressing images, it cannot perform even basic image editing.

Faststone Image Viewer

Unlike the previous utility, Faststone Image Viewer is just a complex application for working with images, and compressing photos is far from its main function. This program is, first of all, a powerful image viewer and editor that works with a huge number of graphic formats.

It should be noted that this application is irrational to use if you plan to use it only as a tool for compressing photos. This is due to the fact that the net weight of Faststone Image Viewer is quite large, and the management of the compression process is complicated by the oversaturated functionality of the utility.

As you can see, the variety of programs for compressing and optimizing images is quite large. They can specialize both in a single photo format, and support the ability to work with a variety of image formats, and even with completely different types of data. These utilities can have only one function - image compression, or they can be very multifunctional, while file compression may not be their main task. In general, users have the opportunity to choose exactly the photo compression application that suits them best.

Any photo taken with a camera or mobile phone can be compressed. In other words, reduce its size and computer weight. Moreover, this does not require any special programs or any special skills.

I will show you how to do this very quickly and easily. All we need is the standard paint program. It is included in Windows itself and, as a rule, is available on any computer with such a system.

But first, let's figure out why you need to do this at all. After all, photos are stored on computers, phones and cameras - and nothing! They take up little space, and generally do not cause any inconvenience.

Why compress photos

You need to reduce them in order to transmit over the Internet. Send by e-mail, skype, add to social networks (Facebook, Odnoklassniki, Vkontakte and others). They also need to be compressed to be added to a website or blog.

The thing is that photos taken with a camera or a modern mobile phone are quite large. Moreover, both computer (in megabytes) and in length and width.

It turns out that the photo that you open on the computer, in fact, is much larger than it is shown on the screen. As a rule, several times.

If you are going to print photos on a printer or in a darkroom, then such a huge size is just what you need. It affects the quality of the “paper” version.

But if you are going to view photos only on a computer screen or mobile phone, then the large size of the picture is unnecessary. You can safely reduce it several times - you will not feel the difference.

For personal use, you don't need to do this - too much hassle. But if you are going to send a photo on the Internet, then you need to reduce the size!

Let me explain why. For example, I recently went to nature with friends and brought many beautiful photographs. Several of them (where I am alone) decided to send by mail to a friend.

They look great on my computer screen, but I didn't take into account that these photos are actually much larger than I see them. In my case, as much as five times.

It turns out that a friend will be able to see all the flaws in my appearance - every speck, every fold. Even wrinkles and pimples on the face.

And, sometimes, such a multi-fold enlarged photo begins to be uploaded in its original size right in the mail. That is, a huge colored canvas will be loaded, which depicts me "in all my glory."

Of course, if I send such a photo to a close relative, then it may be nothing, although it is also not very pleasant. And if a colleague at work or a girl I like ...

Another reason why you need to compress photos for the web is their computer size. It's big enough too.

Of course, most users now have high-speed internet. But there are those for whom it is "outdated" - slow. Moreover, in some cities and even countries, it only happens like that. For such users, downloading a few uncompressed photos will be sheer torment.

And there are many people who have chargeable access to the network (this is especially true for the mobile Internet). That is, they pay for the volume and each extra download can hurt the wallet. But if you just open the sent photo, then it will already be considered as downloading.

But that's not all - there can be other problems with uncompressed photos on the Internet. For example, they may not be added to a page on a social network or dating site.

That is, you decided to add a photo to Odnoklassniki, but it simply does not fit in size - you cannot upload it. And even if they did, then for some visitors to your page it will take an unbearably long time to open.

It turns out that if you upload an uncompressed photo to the site, then the visitor will not only be forced to upload the original (large) photo size, but it may also not be uploaded to the end due to the slow Internet.

In general, there are more than enough reasons to learn how to reduce photos. So let's get started ...

The easiest way to reduce photo size and weight

As for me, the fastest and easiest way to reduce photos is with the standard Paint program.

Paint is a drawing program that is natively built into the Windows system. That is, not only is it free, it is also already installed on the computer (with rare exceptions).

There are, of course, other compression methods, and I will talk about them a little later, but, in my opinion, this option is the most optimal for beginners.

The instructions below are for different systems - Windows 7, 8, Vista, or Windows XP.

It may seem that this is quite difficult, but, in fact, it is not so - I just described everything in too much detail :)

Windows 7, 8 or Vista

  1. Right-click on the photo you want to compress.
  2. We point to the item "Open with ..." and select "Paint" from the additional list.
  3. The Paint program opens, in which our photo will be in its original (large) size.
  4. Click on the inscription "Picture" (above) and select "Stretch / Tilt ...".
  5. In the small window that appears in the "Horizontal" and "Vertical" fields, instead of the number 100, specify the smaller one - as much as we would like to leave as a percentage of the original photo size (for example, 20) - and click "OK". The numbers must be the same in one and in the second field.
  6. The photo is reduced in the program. In the event that the size does not fit, cancel its change. To do this, click on the inscription "Edit" and select "Cancel" from the list.
  7. Click on the inscription "File" and select "Save as ...".
  8. In the window, check that JPEG (* JPG; * .JPEG; * .JPE; * .JFIF) is written at the bottom. If the value is different, click on it and select the one you need from the list.
  9. You can also change the "File name" (print different): then the photo will be in two versions - original (large) and reduced. If you don't change the name, the original photo will be replaced with the new one.
  10. Click on the "Save" button in the window and close the program.

Example

I took a picture with my camera and transferred it to my computer. Now I want to email this photo to my friend.

Knowing that it may be too large, I check its weight and size. To do this, open the folder where the photo is. I click once with the left mouse button on an empty (white) place in the folder. Then I hover the cursor over the photo I need and hold it (do not click). As a rule, after a second, a small window appears with information.

In my case, the actual size of the image is 3508x2508, and the computer weight is 7.66 MB.

If a small window with information does not appear, I click on the photo once with the left. Both size and weight will be written at the bottom of the window.

As for the size. It is specified in points (pixels). It is enough for the highest value to be between 600 and 1000.

So, I do everything according to the instructions. In the resizing window I indicate 20. That is, only 20% of the original large size will remain. I save, having previously changed the name, and close the program.

Then I return to the folder with the photo and see that there are now two pictures in it. I hover over the new resized photo to find out what size it is now.

As you can see, the photo has shrunk significantly, but despite this, when viewed on the screen, it actually did not change.

Now I can mail this new compressed photo to a friend without worrying about problems with it.

By the way, if you want to practice on the same photo, you can save it here.

Other ways to compress photos

You can still compress photos without program... This is done using special sites.

I recommend using compressjpeg.com for this purpose. It is not difficult to work with him, despite the fact that he is in English.

Click on the UPLOAD FILES button.

In the window that appears, we find and open the photo that needs to be compressed.

It is placed just below, loaded, and then immediately begins to shrink. When the process is completed, the picture will show how much it has decreased.

To download this compressed version, you just need to hover over it and click the left mouse button.

The thumbnail photo will be downloaded to the Downloads or Documents folder.

Note: only the computer weight of the photo is reduced - the original size (width and height) remains the same.

Or you can, for example, compress several photos at once and download them packed into an archive. That is, in fact, both compress and archive.

To do this, using the UPLOAD FILES button, add as many photos as we need. They all appear below. After downloading and compressing them, click on the DOWNLOAD ZIP button. Only one file-archive will be downloaded to the computer, inside of which there will be compressed photos.

You can read more about what an archive is and what it is for at the end of this article.

Of the disadvantages of this compression method, it should be noted that any such site reserves the right to use your photos at its own discretion. In fact, you personally transfer the pictures to a third party and allow you to do anything with them.

Photo compression software

In addition to Paint, there are a number of programs that can reduce the size and weight of photos.

This program is convenient to use if you need to send a lot of photos over the Internet at once. FastStone Image Viewer will automatically reduce the width and height, computer size, and, if necessary, rename and archive.

For example, I have fifty photographs. It would take a very long time to compress each one in turn. And so I opened the program, chose a folder with photographs, selected them, compressed them, changed their names and packed them into an archive.

As a result, in a few minutes you can get one file-archive, which will contain all fifty reduced photographs. Moreover, they will be conveniently named (like 01, 02, 03, etc.), and not all sorts of img class = "ada" _1272 or DSC_0195.

You can download FastStone Image Viewer here.

Installation and configuration instructions

Photo Compression Guide

1. Create a new folder on your computer and copy all the photos you want to compress there.

2. Open the FastStone Image Viewer program (shortcut on the Desktop).

3. On the left side of the program, select the folder with photos.

4. Select the photo.

5. Click on the inscription "File" in the upper left corner and select "Send by e-mail".

6. An additional window opens in which you need to specify the compression parameters. I recommend choosing the following:

  • Specify 800x600 in the "Size selection" list
  • Remove the checkboxes from the items "Add frame" and "Save EXIF / IRTC data"
  • Put the checkbox on "Rename", and leave only one # icon in the "Template" field
  • Set the checkbox to "Pack images into archive"

7. Click on the "Copy to ..." button and wait while the program prepares the files for copying.

8. An additional window opens. Click on the "Browse" button, select the folder where you want to place the compressed photos, and click "OK".

9. Click on the "Copy" button.

10. Close all windows and the program itself. Open the folder where the photo was placed and admire the result.

If everything was done according to the instructions, then inside this folder there will be an archive with photos. Here it also needs to be sent over the Internet.

Archiving photos

Archiving is the process of putting multiple files or folders with files into a separate container (archive).

For example, I had ten files, but after archiving there was only one. Inside it will be my ten files.

Previously, this was done to reduce the weight of files, that is, to change their computer size. But this compression does not apply to photos, music and videos - the size remains almost unchanged.

Therefore, they are now archiving files (including photographs) purely for more convenient sending over the Internet. It's much easier to send one file than ten. And it will be more convenient for the recipient.

In general, if you are submitting more than three photos, it is considered good practice to archive them and send an archive, rather than each photo separately.

Good day! If you have hundreds of megabytes in a small folder with pictures? Or are pictures sent by mail for more than 10 minutes, even with a decent internet speed? Or like this, it takes half an hour to send an archive of photos to a USB flash drive? Welcome to the right place, in this article I will tell you which program and how to reduce the size of a JPG file without losing quality.

Compressing an image is a simple science. You can reduce all the pictures in one folder in bulk, at one time, this is called batch processing. Or process each image separately. Let's talk about these methods.

How to reduce the size of a Jpg file - a little theory needed

Regarding the JPG format (and its kind of JPEG), there are 3 ways to resize files. The size of PNG, BMP, GIF and other graphic formats can be adjusted only by the first method.

  1. Reducing the image resolution (number of pixels) without losing quality;
  2. Reducing quality without reducing resolution;
  3. Reducing both resolution and quality at the same time.

Any photo is a set of pixels. In modern cameras, their number exceeds 2-4 thousand horizontally and vertically. This is a lot, from such a resolution megabytes "grow". Does this improve image quality? Practically none, especially for non-professional photographers in everyday photography. Since changing the resolution of a photo can be almost painless for quality, many use this method in order to reduce the image.

I will definitely tell you about the most convenient methods in a note, you just have to choose the one that suits you.

By compressing the image by 2 times (by 50%, in terms of graphic editors), we will reduce its area (and volume!) By 4 times, school geometry in practice.

It is logical to reduce the number of dots in order to reduce the size of the photo - and not notice any changes in quality.

An alternative option for JPG files is to keep the image resolution as it was, but let the computer lower the quality. Some blurring, anti-aliasing or blurring is fine. We can assume that the quality of compression in graphic editors is something like this:

  • 100% - there is no compression of the picture;
  • 90% - the default setting in many programs is minimal compression;
  • 80% - a deeper degree: files are compressed quite a lot;
  • 70% - still acceptable loss of quality, but within reason;
  • 50% and below- a dramatic reduction in the appearance of the drawing, visible to the naked eye.

How to compress an image: a practice in graphic editors

We will experiment with this "still life": an ordinary telephone photo that does not pretend to be artistic, rather it is of the "scary to show" class, but suitable for a family archive.

Technical details: JPG format, resolution 2560 by 1920 pixels, the weight of the source file is unacceptable 2.44 MB. Before compressing a photo, we recommend copying it to a separate folder so as not to lose the picture during the compression process.

Original file: 2.44 MB, with an extension of 2560 × 1920 pixels

Compressing an Image in Paint

In vain this standard graphics editor from the Windows package is considered a frivolous tool. Firstly, it is very interesting and useful to teach "dummies" the basics of PC literacy, and secondly, it is everywhere and always - and when a more powerful program for working with graphics is not installed on a computer, its capabilities will help out more than once.

Open source in Paint: the number of dots is amazing, but their number does not mean beauty or quality at all. Scale: 100%.

To open an image in Paint, you need to right-click on the file and select "Edit".

This editor does not allow you to manually adjust the JPG compression level, but it feels like setting it to around 80%. It is enough to resave the file to get 1.83 MB instead of the original 2.44 MB. By eye, the level of quality has remained almost the same.

The image was compressed to 1.83 MB after resaving in Paint in 2-3 clicks and 10 seconds.

In the arsenal of Paint, there is a way to reduce the size of the picture in pixels. This is a button Resize... When you click it, a dialog box appears, where it is proposed to enter new horizontal / vertical dimensions as a percentage of the original number of points.

Let's choose 50 by 50: 2 times less than the length and width means an area that is 4 times less. By the way, the resolution must be changed in the same way in both dimensions, otherwise the picture will be deformed.

Change picture resolution function standard in most graphic editors, from primitive Paint to monstrous Photoshop.

The result is 616 kilobytes. Not enough for a family archive, but excellent for publishing on websites. Without a magnifying glass, the difference with the source is barely noticeable.

616 kilobytes at a resolution of 1290 × 960 px.

Note that 0.6 megabytes was obtained not only as a result of changing the resolution, but using the "combined" method - the size of the image in Paint is also corrected by reducing the JPG quality by about 85%. It is not possible to change the value of the compress parameter in the required direction. Paint does it automatically.

Reducing image size in Photoshop

This powerful editor can be used for the described tasks. But this is how to transport a package of groceries not in a car, but to call Kamaz. Photoshop is an overly powerful application for such a simple purpose as reducing the weight of a photo.

Opening this program and saving the file in it will take significantly longer than the compression itself. Nevertheless, in order for our instruction to be complete, we will also describe how to compress a picture in Photoshop.

With the file open in Photoshop, you should select the "Image" section, in it click to the item "Image size"... As shown in the picture below.

A dialog box will open where you can manually set the height and width of the picture. OK button - save the file. The same dialog is called hot keys "Ctrl + Alt + I", fast saving of the result, keyboard shortcut - "Ctrl + S".

Second way to reduce file size pictures or photos, this is to apply the quality when saving. Whichever suits you best. Let me show you how to do this with an example.

You should open a window with settings for saving the image, in the desired quality and format. I will continue to torture my doggy photo. Let me remind you that the file size is exactly 2.44 MB, let's see what you can squeeze out of it.

Choose from above - 4 options. Look at the quality changes during compression, you can move the image by previewing it.

Pay attention, on the left from the top - the Source, then they go with compression.

If you look at the second option, the quality has not changed, and the image weight has decreased to 1.6 mb, when the quality is 72. It is quite suitable for storing or sending by mail.

Before saving, you can also set the size of the image. Which you need. And click save, choose a path for recording and you're done.

The best compression software. Batch processing

Paint is always at hand, but too primitive. Photoshop is excessively cumbersome and unwieldy. Which programs are the best for compressing JPGs? Good viewers, they are image managers! Their advantage is support for batch compression: simultaneous processing of all or several selected files in any folder instead of manually changing the pictures one at a time.

ACDSee, XnView and IrfanView: just a trio of numerous programs for compressing images in bulk. Even the thoroughly commercial ACC has a free, but fully functional version. If the program is not Russified, you should remember the word Compress - "Compression". Let's analyze the technology of batch compression using the example of the graphical browser XnView.

Once you open one of the files in the target folder, double-click on it. A filer window with thumbnails of all images will open.

The XnView viewer and editor says that 9 files take up almost 20MB. Disorder!

In the arsenal of viewers there is also the function "Compress JPEG" without lowering the resolution.

Image compression in online services

Although it is convenient and correct to have a program to change the size of a graphic file at hand, you can use numerous online services for this task.

The principle of operation is completely similar to the work of classic PC applications: either compression, or resizing, or - both actions at once. All parameters are customizable.

The disadvantage of the online method is the need to send an initially large file: this process takes some time. Compression web services are usually free, but you also need to download the result back to your PC.

A waste of time is justified if the number of files being reduced does not exceed a few files per month. Specific recommendations? Please, those online services that I use myself.

TinyJPG.com - Foreign service

Not a bad foreign service, without unnecessary settings. The service will do everything for you, just specify the location on your PC for downloading pictures, after which the compression process will start automatically.

I will warn you right away, the site for unregistered users has compression restrictions - 20 images with a maximum size of 5 MB.

Upon completion of the process, it is possible to download all the files in one archive or one at a time, as it is convenient for you.

IMGonline.com.ua - convenient and understandable

If you use this service, then on it you can change the size of the image itself, as well as compress the file itself with setting the desired quality. About what quality is acceptable, I wrote at the beginning of the article.

One of the free online services.

Both services allow you not only to play with sizes and quality, but also to edit pictures. There is a detailed help system. Which I advise you to familiarize yourself with before using.

In other operating systems, including mobile ones, the principles and settings of compress technologies are the same.

Picture Handling in Mac OS

Let's take a look at the process of working with images on a Mac, for example, the standard “Viewer” application compresses images perfectly: there is no need to install additional software, even for batch processing. Viewer on Mac knows how to resize multiple photos at once.

Select one or several images, open them in the preview, then select Tools> Customize Size, and fill in the required values. And you save.

Conclusion

We recommend that you experiment with compressing pictures yourself - at the same time, after copying them to a test folder, so as not to lose important photos. After 3-4 attempts, you will practically understand how to reduce the image size in the optimal way, with the most appropriate compression, width and height parameters.

  1. Install and use any high-quality graphic file manager on a daily basis.
  2. Forget Photoshop: this is too powerful and clumsy editor for such simple tasks.
  3. Use online services only when there are no other ways at hand - and use Paint for single files.

Disclaimer: Not a single dog was harmed during art and programming experiments. :)
