Search engine statistics is the most important factor in determining a website promotion strategy. Indeed, it is important to know the audience of search engine users, thereby understanding which search engine (Yandex, Google, Bing, etc.) is more "profitable" to promote, will bring more visitors, conversions, and profits. An incorrectly chosen promotion strategy can significantly affect the financial costs when promoting projects.

The previous one was held in June last year and showed an increasing share of the Google search engine and a fall in the share of the Yandex search engine. Let's take a look at what happened in the current year.

1. Research methodology

The raw data comes from the open source Liveinternet statistics. Unfortunately, the number of sites hosting the LI counter is gradually decreasing. So in 2016 there were data for 200 million unique users daily, and in the current 2019, there were already 100 million unique users. But nevertheless, these statistics are sufficient and not biased, as they are weakly dependent on the "wants" of search engines.

The data is divided by user segments. The most interesting data are for the Russian-speaking segment, but comparative data for other countries will be provided.

2. Dynamics of traffic from search engines Yandex and Google

A study of the shares of search engines in generating traffic to sites in the Russian-speaking segment was carried out in several sections.

2.1. Transitions from Yandex and Google of Russian-speaking users

Here you can find data on the number of average daily clicks for the month of August each year by all Russian-speaking users to sites with established LI statistics from Yandex and Google search engines. This data does not take into account the regional affiliation of the visitors.

As you can see, the share of Russian-speaking google users growing annually, as of August 2019 it is 56.4% and significantly exceeds Yandex's share of 41%. This is due to the fact that in the Russian-speaking countries of the near abroad, Yandex is not used as a search engine, which will be demonstrated below.

The dynamics of the indicator is shown in the graph:

As we can see, Google's trendline is ascending, while Yandex's is descending.

Conclusion: In the environment russian speaking of users, Google is more popular, while its popularity is growing.

2.2. Dynamics of the shares of organic traffic for users from Russia

Let's explore which search engine is used more often in Russia. First, let's use the LI data with the restriction - region: "Russia".

If even last year Yandex was more popular among Russian users, then already this year, 2019, 50.7% of Russians used Google as a search engine. The share of Yandex this year was only 46.6%.

The dynamics of the growth of popularity of the search engine Google in the region "Russia" can be clearly seen on the graph.

An upward trend for Google and a downward trend for Yandex are clearly visible.

Thanks to LI data, it is possible to track the ratio of Yandex and Google users in Russia by region.

Strange as it may seem, Yandex is the leader among Moscow users. The share of this search engine is 49.7%, while Google is 2% behind with a user share of 47.7%.

In St. Petersburg, as a more progressive city, Google is confidently leading. Their share is 53.2%, while Yandex accounts for only 44.6%.

  • Kazan: 56.1% / 40.6%
  • Yekaterinburg: 52.9% / 44.4%
  • Kaliningrad: 62.1% / 32.3%
  • Kemerovo: 45.6% / 49.8%
  • Novosibirsk: 57.8% / 40.7%
  • Ufa: 50.2% / 46.5%
  • Vladivostok: 67.5% / 30.3%

Thus, the farther from the main capital, the higher the share of Google and the lower - Yandex. Kemerovo is surprisingly out of this statistics. There, in only one of the regions, the share of Yandex users exceeds Google users.

This is the statistics of Yandex and Google requests in Russia for August 2019. Let us now turn to the neighboring countries.

2.3. Use of search engines in Belarus

Traditionally, Google occupies a leading position in Belarus. Let's see what the share of search engines in 2019 according to LI data.

As we can see, in Belarus in August 2019, 72.8% of users chose Google for search. Yandex's share is only 24.8%.

2.4. The popularity of search engines in Kazakhstan

In Kazakhstan, the picture for Yandex is even more depressing.

Yandex owns 16.1% of all search queries, while Google has 78.9%. Interestingly, Mail.ru search is somewhat popular among the residents of Kazakhstan. It was used by 4.9% of users.

2.5. Use of search engines in Ukraine

After the ban of Yandex and its services in Ukraine, the share of this PS is steadily decreasing.

Google is the undisputed leader. 92.7% of Internet users use it to search. The share of Yandex by August 2019 is only 6.3%.

Now let's compare the LI data with the crafty Rotor data

2.6. Yandex Radar data on the popularity of search engines

So, I chose settings - data for August 2019, all platforms and all operating systems. And this is what I see:

According to the radar, 56% of users use Yandex, while Google only 40.69%. The data absolutely “does not beat” with the numbers from LI and looks clearly twisted towards Yandex.

Perhaps Yandex uses its clever methods of calculating the share of users, according to which it turns out that they are the leader among other search engines.

3. Mobile and desktop users

Let's consider the distribution of desktop and mobile users in different sections. As always, LI statistics come to our aid. The research will be conducted mainly for users from Russia.

Let's summarize the average data for August 2019 for users from the region "Russia" into a single table. Here:

  • Visitors - the number of unique site visitors.
  • A session is a series of several site views from one visitor, and no more than 15 minutes should elapse between adjacent views.
  • Average duration - the duration of sessions in minutes (the time interval between the first and the last viewing in a session. The duration of a session from one viewing is zero).
  • Views per Visitor - The average number of views per visitor.

So, 64.4% of users in Russia in August 2019 use mobile devices (phones and tablets). 35.6% of visitors work on the Internet from personal computers. The data is averaged over the entire month.

Interestingly, the "quality" of desktop users is much higher than mobile users. From a computer, the depth of viewing sites is 2 times greater, the time spent on the site is 1.5 times higher, the number of sessions from a desktop is immeasurably higher than from mobile devices.

3.2. Using operating systems in Russia

Let's present data on usage operating systems by visitors to sites on which the LI meter is installed.

As we can see, 52.2% of users visited sites in August 2019 using onboard Android devices.

Today, many SEOs, site owners feel the changes that are knocking on their doors. For example, the share of mobile users is growing, the share of using Google is growing in comparison with other search engines, etc. But they have no concrete figures on hand. Search engine rankings are not published anywhere. And optimizers in the old-fashioned way are trying to optimize for the desktop or Yandex, although today the situation is completely different. Let's look at specific sections of Runet users and find out for which search engines and platforms the site should be optimized. Let's get started.

Open statistics Liveinternet will help us in our research. Since the slices are taken for the same sites, the overall sample on the Runet will be reliable. And since the counter, despite its obsolescence, is on a significant number of sites, the completeness of the study will be sufficient.

Attention! Data is out of date!

1. Statistics of mobile and desktop users in 2018

We define the share of mobile users as the sum of the shares of users with mobile operating systems.

As we can see, as of May 2018 the share of mobile website visitors in Runet is 70.2%... The share of desktop users is less than a third of the total number of all visitors to Runet sites.

Surprisingly, there are many users of apple products - about 17%, and most of them use phones or tablets - more than 16% of them.

Let's see the dynamics of such growth over the past 3 years.

Share of mobile users of Runet,%

  • Share of mobile users

While maintaining the same growth rate of 3% per year, the share of mobile users by 2021 will already be 80%.

It becomes clear that already "yesterday" it was necessary to optimize sites for mobile versions, because too many visitors are lost when optimizing only for the desktop.

Therefore, I can't help but say that mine is becoming more and more relevant in terms of optimizing the site for mobile users.

It should be noted that a user can simultaneously be both a mobile and a desktop visitor to the site at the same time, if he logs in during the day from different devices to the Internet.

2. Statistics of the use of search engines in 2018

Consider the search engine rankings in 2018. The share of Yandex users falls annually. The share of Google users is growing. While the decline in the number of Yandex users on the Runet is quite smooth, in neighboring countries, the situation for Yandex is simply disastrous.

So, the search engine market for May 2018 is presented as follows.

As we can see in Runet, 52.1% of users in 2018 prefer Google, and only 44.6% prefer Yandex. Unfortunately, we will not determine the reliable number of users of the most common search engines in 2018 in Russia, since LI is set only for a fraction of sites.

Let's take a look at the dynamics of search engine usage since 2015.

Runet search engine dynamics,%

  • Yandex
  • Google

We see that there is a downtrend for Yandex and an uptrend for Google on the Runet.

The distribution of search engines in Belarus is as follows:

As you can see, 67.7% of Internet users in Belarus use Google and only 29.1% - Yandex.

Let's see another Russian-speaking republic - Kazakhstan

Google's position is even more solid here. 79.9% of users in Kazakhstan use Google and only 14.8% use Yandex.

We will not consider Ukraine. In Ukraine, Yandex is banned and, accordingly, Google's share there tends to 90%, and the share of the most persistent Yandex users is less than 10%. Surely, they have mailboxes on Yandex and they have to somehow bypass the blocking.

So, it becomes clear that it is necessary to optimize sites first of all for Google and on the leftover basis - under Yandex. This situation will persist, unless Roskomnadzor blocks Google services completely (which is quite possible from them). Search statistics indicate an increase in Google's share both in Russia and around the world.

Now let's combine the data of the first and second sections and build a diagram of the distribution of users between Google and Yandex and simultaneously between mobile and desktop users.

Distribution of users between search engines and devices

  • Yandex - mobile
  • Yandex - desktop
  • Google - mobile
  • Google desktop

As we can see, the largest share - 36.6% - is taken by mobile search in Google, and the smallest - by desktop search in Google.

3. Behavioral and distribution of Runet by browsers used

Google search results will certainly be better than any other search results, if only because of the volume of accumulated and processed statistics. If we abstract from the world search, where Yandex's share is negligible, and consider only Runet, then the presence and popularity of Google's own browser gives a significant advantage over other search engines.

It is believed that Google Chrome does not transmit or collect any behavioral data. These digital security advocates are still in the wild. I am of a different opinion that Chrome collects a lot of behavioral data in one way or another, which allows Google to build more correct behaviors and improve ranking.

Here are the statistics on the use of browsers in Runet for May 2018.

As you can see from the above data, Chromium is used by 60.2% of all Internet users.

The statistics collected should be more sufficient to make certain decisions about user behavior and improve the ranking of organic results on Google.

Interestingly, there are 3 users of the 3rd Netscape left in Russia. Who are they? Why are they using it? Unclear.

Let's go back to LI behavioral statistics for Runet.
