Our laboratory received a tablet equipped with an 8 "TFT screen with a resolution of 800 × 600 pixels with a multi-touch function and an aspect ratio of 4: 3, a Rockchip RK2918 processor. The processor is a typical system-on-a-chip model, contains one computing core. Cortex A8 with a frequency of up to 1.2 GHz (the manufacturer does not specify the exact frequency), a Vivante GC800 graphics core with support for hardware decoding of popular video formats up to 1080p, as well as a 32-bit interface of 512 MB of RAM, also typical for "budget" tablets ...

That is, we have a standard representative of tablets of the level of the first iPad, it does not reach the performance level, but such a task was not set for the tablet. On the other hand, you will be able to run popular applications and games.

The tablet is running Android 2.3 operating system. with the ability to install third-party applications for the Android platform (instead of Android Market, you will receive your SlideME Market repository). The tablet is equipped with an 8 "TFT screen, the dimensions of the tablet are rather modest (203.1 x 153.4 x 11.2 mm).

We were unable to run the GLBenchmark 2.1.2 test, as it conflicted with the Chainfire 3D driver.

Overall system performance

We used Smartbench 2011 1.2.1 and Smartbench 2012 1.0.0 to evaluate overall system performance. This benchmark is very similar to the 3DMark and SysMark packages in that it provides a simple and convenient performance index for two categories: productivity applications and games. The results are significantly inferior to those previously tested, that is, they clearly belong to the "budget" category. At the same time, the performance is comparable to competing low-cost tablets, for example.

Perhaps the Cortex A8 computing core in the tablet works a little slower (the manufacturer does not disclose the real frequency), so the Linpack and Productivity results turn out to be lower than IconBIT with the same Cortex A8 computing core. At the same time, the performance of the Vivante GC800 graphics core is higher than that of IconBIT NetTAB RUNE, so the games will run a little faster. Let's see if the trend continues in the transition to the 2012 version of SmartBench.

The SmartBench 2012 results confirm our guess: the tablet has a faster graphics core, as it is 28% faster in tablet games.

JavaScript performance

SunSpider is a JavaScript benchmark that demonstrates both the performance of a tablet's JavaScript engine and the processing power (to a lesser extent) of hardware. Poor JavaScript implementation on a very fast tablet can blur the entire platform's performance. And at the same time, the great JavaScript implementation will make efficient use of even slow systems. However, today the main implementations of JavaScript engines are getting closer to each other, developers are borrowing all the best ideas. JavaScript tests are single threaded due to the nature of browsers. The SunSpider benchmark avoids many of the micro-benchmarks we see in applications like GeekBench, while at the same time the benchmark attempts to evaluate the CPU-sensitive tasks that are found in real web applications.

Below are the results for SunSpider 0.9.1 on iPads and iPad 2 running iOS 4.3, Motorola Xoom running Android 3.0, Mobii Tegra Tablet 10.1 "and Samsung Galaxy Tab running 2.2. Android devices use the Google V8 JavaScript engine, and iPad and iPad 2 run Apple Nitro JavaScript Engine.

We tested network performance using the IxChariot benchmark. As an access point, we used an Asus AM604g ADSL router with a 100 Mbps connection to a gigabit switch, which was connected via a gigabit network to the test server (4-core Intel processor on Sandy Bridge architecture). The tablet was about 1 meter away from the access point. We tested the 802.11g network mode, at that time there were no other active transmissions, no interference was detected in the network coverage area either.

Although the tablet copes with the main tasks perfectly, we did not have any serious comments.

Such a CPU provides quite decent performance in fairly resource-intensive applications, such as video games. What can we say about surfing the Internet - there are no problems at all. Therefore, as for a budget solution, the processor is good. In addition, the tablet is equipped with one gigabyte of RAM. It would seem that this amount of RAM is not enough, but in fact, it is quite enough to watch movies on YouTube, sit in the same social media. networks like VKontakte or Facebook, because before this amount of memory was used even on stationary computers and was quite normal on the Internet. If we talk about video games, then there are no problems with memory consumption either.

If there are no questions about RAM, then the ROM leaves much to be desired. We have a flash drive with a capacity of only 8 gigabytes, and also keep in mind that the Android 5.1 operating system installed on the tablet will take up a certain place. So, there is most likely a minus here. Nevertheless, this defect can be easily corrected by purchasing and inserting a Micro-SD drive with a capacity of up to 32 gigabytes into the tablet.
