Samsung galaxy s7 edge explodes. Samsung smartphones keep exploding

08.01.2021

Now the network and television are flooded with reviews about Samsung Galaxy Note 7 - why does a smartphone from this well-known company explode and, in general, is it true?

Indeed, the long-term rivalry between the Korean Samsung and the American iPhone this time ended in a practical defeat for the Koreans. The new flagship Galaxy Note 7 turned out to be a bomb in the literal sense of the word. And many fans of the famous brand now want to know: why does Samsung explode and what to do?

What is the problem with Samsung Galaxy Note 7?

So, August 2016 saw the explosion of thirty-five Korean Galaxy Note 7 from Samsung right in the hands of users. And by the end of the month, the bulk of pre-orders, in particular from Russia, had been suspended. And even a day later, information appeared about a complete stop of the production of defective models. This is a difficult situation for our Korean friends. What is the next…

And then - more. The first days of September were marked by the termination of sales of samsung galaxy note 7 in ten major consumer countries and the beginning of a large-scale campaign to withdraw prepaid orders and replace the sold devices. In Russia alone, almost a thousand people managed to order a new explosive flagship laptop 7.

Why are Samsung smartphones exploding? Maybe this is an act of terrorists or the intrigues of competitors? By no means - everything is much more trivial. The problem lies in defective batteries that are too capacious.

The company, of course, having suspended sales, immediately began a thorough investigation of cases of spontaneous combustion and even battery explosions at Galaxy Note 7. Safety first! Yeah ... I wonder if the family of the Korean who died in 2007 from the explosion of the LG phone will believe in this. His lungs were torn apart and his spine was broken. Of course, Samsung has nothing to do with this, but trust falls in general to any smartphone.

Come on, if such an incident took place somewhere in a third world country, at the "left" manufacturer. But Samsung is the leader in the smartphone market. According to statistics, almost every fourth person in the world uses a smartphone of this brand. And even less - and the security is at the proper level. For now…

So, without leaving the topic - why are Samsung Galaxy blowing up? At first, the company tried to place all the blame on non-original chargers. Rave! People always charged their phones than necessary. And manufacturers are well aware of this. And what kind of original can we talk about if Samsung does not produce charging blocks on its own, ordering them from other manufacturers. Moreover, many companies even have a contract for the production of smartphones with the same charging connector.

Yes, and all chargers, in principle, do not have such serious differences - these are standard 5V and 2A. Yes, no doubt there are devices for faster battery filling. But even in them, only the voltage rises, but not the power.

Moreover, all modern smartphones are equipped with a special controller. If the model does not support fast charging, it will not happen. Additionally, they do not allow overcharging - which is extremely critical in this case.

It follows that a working device will not allow harm when charging, no matter what device it is connected to. And here the first defects were revealed - the very controller could fail. And the Samsung Note models from the first batch did not have them at all!

Due to overcharging, the electrolyte in the battery boiled up and a large amount of gas was emitted. Naturally, the pressure in the smartphone body instantly took off to a critical point - and now it is a real micro-explosion, with fragments of the body flying in different directions. A real time bomb. Put it on charge, sit down and wait until "arrives". This is some kind of diversion! You can imagine - like this I bought a smartphone for my 12-year-old daughter, and he exploded, pouring over her with a hail of fragments ...

The iPhone, for example, often has a different problem - theirs.

And if it only exploded when charging. So, no - sometimes they fly away right in the hands. How can this be explained? Why do Samsung phones explode after recharging? There is a completely true version. The fact is that the battery in the seventh Samsung does not withstand overheating at all, and when the temperature of the processor in the smartphone rises, it explodes! This is probably why the series of explosions occurred in the summer month. I can quite believe it.

Or maybe the situation is just escalating here and you shouldn't take it seriously? Everyone will decide for himself how to react. But let him know that lithium from a smartphone battery, when ignited, gains a temperature of 1339 ° C, and hot splashes fly in all directions, capable of burning through even completely hard surfaces, not to mention human skin. In addition, the likelihood of fires has now increased significantly. And fragments of the shell can damage the eardrum or even the carotid artery. The consequences of such damage are not hard to imagine.

How not to explode with Samsung Galaxy Note 7?

Why the Samsung Note explodes is understandable, but now what to do? The surest remedy is not to use smartphones or leave your home at all. It's safer this way. And those who do not want to resort to such radical methods should get a wireless headset for displaying messages. But in general, living in constant fear that your electronic pet may explode at any moment is somehow not reasonable.

Those who fly often should think about a special thermal container in which a potential "saboteur" will hide during the flight. Also Russian companies it is not recommended to turn it on during the flight, and even more so not to try to charge it. And in general, now, probably, you will have to wear head armor ...

The danger came from where it was not expected. And it will not be Alkaida or EGIL that will blow you up, but own smartphone! But I am glad that the warning applies only to Samsung models Note 7 purchased before the second of September and then outside of Russia. After all, there were no official sales of this batch in the Russian Federation. That is great!

And so, Russian aviation simply does not catch up with fear - it takes into account the experience of American colleagues. There, one of the frivolous Yankees, Samsung began to smoke right on board the liner at Louisville airport. Why frivolous - yes, because this citizen was aware of the marriage and simply exchanged the old model for a new one. Which did not prevent him from disembarking from the plane along with the rest of the passengers right before departure. And why did he not please him? Do you want some Korean exoticism?

P.S. Samsung surprised not only Note 7 smartphones. And the question of why Samsung washing machines explode has also become relevant. True, reports of the explosions of Asian washing machines come mainly from the States - now, probably, they will see shoals of Korean "bombers" everywhere. So this year the company's products have become the most "explosive". Although, for example, it has established itself as an excellent device!

Although, I want to believe that the brand will restore its reputation. After all, his products have always been distinguished by quality and reliability.

The problem was fixed in new batches, but many burned out.

While the world is discussing about the exploded iPhone 7 Plus, we decided to recall the incidents of fire of a truly dangerous device - Samsung Galaxy Note7.

The South Korean company skipped the Note 6 model in its lineup, considering that the number and scale of changes in the new smartphone makes it possible to "jump" one step. May be, not worth the anger of the gods of arithmetic and logic?

Samsung sold around 2.5 million Galaxy Note7s but launched a recall campaign a couple of weeks later. Naturally, it was not possible to do this promptly, and almost every day we hear news about the injured Note7 owners.

It all started almost immediately after the official start of sales.

1. After the fire, the house almost burned down

School teacher Park Soo-Jung was forced to leave her own bed in a hurry when her brand new Galaxy Note7 suddenly burst into flames and filled the bedroom with smoke. The teacher got off with fright and light bruises after falling out of bed.

2. The blogger demonstrates the burnt out Galaxy Note7

On your Youtube channel user Ariel Gonzalez posted a video showing a Samsung Galaxy Note7 burned right on the charger. Gonzales is currently in talks with Samsung for damages.

3. Together with Note7, the garage completely burned down

Wesley Hartzog left his smartphone charging in the garage, which eventually burned out. According to Wesley, he missed the news that Samsung is withdrawing its new product due to the problem of battery fire.

4. Note7 caused a jeep fire

American Nathan Dornacher left his Galaxy Note7 charging in a Jeep Grand Cherokee. After some time, he heard the alarming barking of a dog, looked out into the street and found his jeep on fire.

5. The man was left without pants. It could be even worse

Florida resident Jonathan Strobel suffered second-degree burns when a Samsung Galaxy Note7 exploded in his front pants pocket. Jonathan plans to sue the South Korean company for 15 thousand dollars.

6. The child suffered from the fire of Note7

A six-year-old boy from Brooklyn suffered minor hand burns after the Samsung Galaxy Note7 caught fire in his hands. According to the child's grandmother, the incident occurred while the grandson was watching a video on a smartphone that was charging.

7. Samsung smartphone damaged MacBook Pro

Chinese Hui Renjie received minor burns to two fingers and damage to his MacBook from which the ill-fated Galaxy Note7 was charged. Curiously, according to the Chinese user, the device was from a new "safe" batch.

7.Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge may be unsafe too

The other day there was another case of fire on a Samsung smartphone. This time the fire was caused by Galaxy S7 Edge. The smartphone caught fire while charging. The owner of the house, Danielle Boutilier, was forced to call the firefighters. According to her, until the moment of fire, the smartphone was constantly overheating. Accidental coincidence or all Galaxy S7 are unsafe yet is not clear.

Of course, there are dozens of cases of explosions and fires of the fiery flagship Samsung Galaxy Note7. We have collected those that have received widespread press coverage.

The biggest failure in the mobile industry

On September 2, Samsung Mobile President Koh Dong Jin was forced to publicly apologize for the self-igniting Galaxy Note7.

To date, many airlines have urged aircraft passengers to restrict the use of the Samsung Galaxy Note7 smartphone. Samsung capitalization fell by $ 22 billion, while analysts note that the company's losses will be even greater. It is not only about recall costs, but also about lost opportunities and company prestige.

Galaxy Note7 sales have resumed worldwide from yesterday. Are you afraid to buy now or not?

@just_tf, Don't .. You just don't remember how to do it right. When, for example, laptops of all leading companies turned out to have exploding batteries.
And Samsung noted that the sales, after two dozen incidents, continued to try to hide everything under the carpet (their compensation to the direct owners of the ignited devices included a disclosure ban, which no one in America has done for a long time), without understanding, rolled out the first replacement, resisted for a long time to acknowledge the problem in her. And in the end I ended up with strange payments both in form and in content. I still remember that story about a woman with two laptops, to whom the money was returned almost a month after she brought the noises and refused to change them to S7.
In short, Koreans are not strong here.

@vugi, it's not like that.
There are greyhounds yablokoy. Batteries are cut off by 30%, and they don't care.
I'm not even talking about the fact that more than 100 iPhones exploded or caught fire :)

@vugi,
Did the epl admit all the fires ?? And didn't you try to hide anything?
We closed this issue more than worthily.
except note 7 and there is nothing to remember?)

And then the epl immediately recognized or did not recognize at all:
Defective screens in iPhones 4, 5, 6
Defective batteries 5, 6
Defective power buttons 5
Peeling body for 5 and 7
Peeling displays on expensive poppies
About accessories that are torn after a couple of months, I will not say anything at all
This is really high-quality production !!))
What I remembered on the fly, but what else was

@just_tf,
>> And you didn't try to hide anything?

Apple has an American mentality. They understood perfectly well from the beginning that attempts to hide the problem (especially with a fire - are stupid and lead, rather, to the opposite result). I will not say that Samsung performed very badly in the history of the battery .. But I could have behaved much better.
>> except for note 7 and there is nothing to remember?)
When the house is on fire, it doesn't really matter how much your furniture matched the color of the walls. Samsung has poor service and poor support in my opinion. Anyone who has ever compared the process of replacing or repairing devices from them and from Apple knows this. The same “cultural” problem as in the battery story.

I see no reason to argue about periodic quality problems. There are only two companies that produce phones in this volume. And only one of them actually sells millions of pieces on the very first day. Naturally, the whole focus of attention is on her. Who is interested in the problems in the Chinese or cheap Samsung / LG?))) And there are much more of them.

@vugi, no need to change readings))

What's wrong? The support is great, more than. It all sounds too general)

Periodic ?? Ahah
God, there is nothing to even ask about, a typical eplodrocher, any shit is ready to eat if only there was an apple sign)

"Cheap" facepalm
Well, yes, that's why Apple refused to publish the sales volume at the start of the 7th?)

@just_tf,
>> no need to change readings))

I didn't seem to change anything ..)

>> The support is great, more than.

Fig. But to understand this, you need to compare. You, as I see, did not have such an opportunity. Too lazy to go into details, but just as an example - Apple has a list of indications for warranty repair / replacement of the device much larger than the Samsung one. That is, there are many situations when Samsung will send you (as it did with overheating of the batteries), and Apple will change it without words.

>> Periodic ?? Ahah

Yes, periodic. Because no other phone is being tested in the millions on the first weekend. The Note7 came close, but the test failed miserably.
And you don't really hear about the problems of Chinese shit - because it is not interesting to anyone. You just hear about the problem of top-end Samsung - that's why I mentioned cheap ones.

>> Yeah, that's why apple refused to publish 7th launch sales?)

Some bullshit. Open the quarterly report and see the sales for the quarter. I don’t know why you are so worried about sales on the first weekend, but if the quarter was a record - then the first weekend is likely too.

What happened to Samsung's flagship?

An employee of a Korean cafe tries to extinguish a burning smartphone

The Samsung Note 7 was supposed to be the main competitor to the iPhone 7. Media rave about the design, camera and stylus. It was even introduced a month before the new iPhone and released a few weeks before Apple presentations- Samsung believed that this would help take away market share from a competitor. But in the first week after the release, messages began to appear about igniting batteries. In early September, the company decided to recall the devices, and at the end of the month, it re-released the Note 7 with a "safe" battery.
But reports of fires continued to arrive anyway. On October 11, Samsung asked stores around the world to sell the Note 7, and the owners - the devices and no longer use them. They can now swap the Note 7 for another Galaxy model (paying the difference) or get the money back. In Russia, the terms of return are specified by calling the hotline.

How often did phones actually explode?

Before the beginning Samsung reviews managed to sell about 2.5 million devices (excluding China), but the battery defect, according to the company, is only 0.1%. That is, the battery could have burned out in about 2.5 thousand Note 7. The exact number of cases of fire is unknown, but there are definitely more than a hundred of them: in mid-September it was known about in the USA, in Australia, in Korea and one in Taiwan. But new messages still pop up.

From the description of the incidents, it is impossible to understand in which cases the smartphone starts to burn. Florida Note 7 set fire a jeep, when it was charging from a cigarette lighter, in Australia, the device was almost a hotel room - also during charging, in South Carolina it completely burned down a garage, a switched off Note 7 smoked in a breast pocket on an airplane flying to Baltimore, in Connecticut, a smartphone was practically in the hands of a teenager (he received minor burns), and in Kentucky, unconnected to the Note 7 network at night in the bedroom.

What causes the phone to light up at all?

The fact is that the battery of a smartphone is compressed from many layers of electrical conductors. Each layer has a cathode with positively charged ions and an anode with negatively charged ions. On the cathode side are lithium ions: when the battery is charged, they pass from the cathode to the anode, and when the battery is used, they go back. Between the cathode and the anode is a thin dielectric plate that does not conduct electric current and does not allow the cathode to react with the anode.

If the partition between them collapses, then the ions will follow a short path - a short circuit will occur. Then a chain reaction will begin: the battery will heat itself up even more, and the electrolyte will release flammable gas. When the reaction gains access to oxygen, it will ignite or even explode. This is the general principle of the process, you can learn more about it.

Why are batteries so vulnerable?

In modern batteries, the thickness of the dielectric is only 20-25 micrometers, which is about three times thinner than a regular sheet of office paper. First, this thin layer can collapse due to external pressure. For example, if you sit on your smartphone, bend it or hit it hard. After the destruction of the dielectric, the cathode and anode will react. The dielectric can also collapse due to metal dust that remains inside after assembly.

The second reason for a short circuit is temperature. Lithium-ion batteries are not designed to operate in cold or hot weather. Due to overheating, the lithium metal in the battery grows into needle-like structures (dendrites), which can destroy the dielectric and create a short circuit.

There are many other reasons for heating: the smartphone is charged in the sun, Charger the third-party manufacturer does not know when to stop the current supply, the chip does not work, which turns off charging after 100%, the battery has a bad heat sink. Lithium-ion batteries have operating temperatures: they normally charge at temperatures from zero to 45 degrees, and operate at temperatures from –20 to 60 degrees. If the temperature is higher or lower, problems begin, and at 100 degrees, very serious problems.

Why did this happen with the Note 7?

GTA V even has an addition in the form of a new Note 7 weapon capable of destroying opponents.

At Samsung, that the batteries were burning due to a short circuit. Because of what exactly it happened - an internal investigation will find out. Employees of the company that the smartphone was preparing in a hurry in order to be in time before the presentation of Apple: the start date of sales was moved 10 days earlier, engineers were constantly changing specifications and ordering new components, and employees had to sleep at work.

Lithium-ion batteries are not considered the most efficient for today's smartphones. Each year, the devices have more than powerful processors, brighter screens, however, there are no fundamental changes in the batteries. Manufacturers only have to stack the conductor layers tighter to get more capacitance in a thinner package. The Note 7's battery was large enough at 3,500 milliampere-hours. By comparison, the Note 6 has a 3000mAh battery, while the iPhone 7 has a 2900mAh battery. It is possible that during a complex production process, the accumulators have uneven pressure, which is why they were also charged unevenly.

What will happen to Samsung?

On the day the sales stopped, the company's shares fell by 8%, and the capitalization decreased by $ 17 billion. For comparison - in the fourth quarter of 2015, the company had operating income of $ 5.4 billion. It is unknown how much money Samsung will lose on returning devices.

Do smartphones from other manufacturers burn?

A defect in a battery is considered rare but dangerous. If defective batteries are sold, just a few episodes of fire are enough for the company to recall the entire batch. In 2006, Dell and Apple nearly 6 million laptops with Sony batteries due to some of them catching fire. Although the probability of a defect was much lower than in the case of the Note 7: 1 in 200,000 instead of 1 in 1000.

The phones were on fire before. In 2002, a device of an unknown brand of pants, when he sat down on his iPhone 5c. And a student from New Jersey had an iPhone 6s on fire in his shirt pocket, although it was turned off. A month ago, a construction worker from Ohio severe burns to his leg when his Galaxy S7 Edge started burning in his pocket, and a few days ago a young man from Zhengzhou burned and scratched when an iPhone 7 shattered in his hands while filming a video.

What should be done to prevent the smartphone from exploding?

Do not charge your smartphone in hot or subzero temperatures. Do not use cables or chargers from other smartphones or third-party manufacturers - especially for fast charging, as this will heat the battery even more. Stop charging if your smartphone gets very hot (in this case, you should replace the battery or cable). Do not leave charging for a long time if the battery heats up after 100%. Stop using the device if the case is bent or the battery is noticeably swollen or deformed. If the recommendations are violated, the battery may not explode, but the likelihood of breakdown will increase.

And what to do to make it catch fire for sure?

You can pierce the battery with something sharp: the dielectric will collapse - the cathode and anode will react, a short circuit will begin. You can leave your phone charging under a heavy stress test and under a desk lamp. But doing neither one nor the other is not worth it - it is impossible to guess what the consequences will be: in one case, the battery will simply smoke and melt the phone, in the other - a stream of flame will hit from it.
