Start numbering from page 2. How to number pages in Word? How to remove incorrect page markup

03.06.2022

Users of the Word text editor often encounter document numbering. Using standard numbering is very easy. But when you need page numbering in the Word starting from sheet 2, then unforeseen difficulties arise. Since it will no longer be possible to number the pages in the usual way. Let's take a closer look at how you can number a document from the second page in Word 2007 and 2010.

The second sheet with the number "Two"

If you want the second page to be number 2 and the first sheet to be unnumbered, follow these steps. First you need to number all the pages of the entire document.

Second page numbered "1"

There is such a situation when you need to number from the second sheet under the number "One". The first sheet must remain unnumbered. Initially, you need to do the usual numbering. And after that you need to open the "Insert" tab in the "Headers and Footers" area, click on the "Page Number" button. Select "Page Number Format" from the drop-down menu.

Set "Start at:" and pagination from "number 0".

As a result, the first page will be numbered "0". The second is numbered "1". If you want to hide the page number on the first sheet, then set the "Special header and footer for the first page." The first method shows more clearly how to remove the page number from the first sheet.

Often, when writing long materials in Word, you need to quickly put down page numbering. For diplomas, abstracts, books, articles. In this article, you will learn how to automatically number pages in Microsoft Word text editor. How to number from the first, second or third sheet, exclude any pages.

I'm worthWord 2016. Also checked in version 2007 and 2010.In other versions, the interface is slightly different, but the actions are very similar.

Numbering from the first page

Let's start with a standard task - to number all pages in order without exceptions.

In the top panel in Word, select the "Insert" tab → "Page number" → "Page number".

A window will appear in which you can choose where to display the number (top or bottom) and alignment. In some versions, there will be a drop-down box with a choice of header and footer template instead.

Changing the numbering format

When setting the numbering, there is a "Format" button. With it, you can change the display and numbering order. For example, make the numbering in letters, Roman numerals, start counting the numbering from an arbitrary number.

Double clicking on the page number opens the header and footer constructor. You can also change the format using the Page Number button.

Numbering from the second page

In order not to put the first page number, follow the steps from the previous paragraph: on the insert tab, click "Page number" and in the window that appears, uncheck "Number on the first page".

A similar result can be obtained by double-clicking on the numbering, and on the opened tab with the header and footer constructor, click the checkbox "Special header for the first page".

The countdown starts from the first page, just the number will not be displayed on it.

To exit the header and footer constructor, its tab has a special button: “Close header and footer window”.

Change starting digit

If you need to count from the second page from the number 1, you need to set 0 as the initial number. To do this, double-click on the page number, on the tab that appears, open "Page Number" → "Page Number Format" → "Start at" → specify 0.

At the same time, do not forget to click the checkbox "Special header for the first page" so that zero is not shown.

If you want to start numbering from 3, 4, 5 or another page other than the second one, you can’t just put a special header and footer, it only works for the first page. In such cases, go to the first page, place the cursor on the last line of the first page, and click on the Layout tab → Breaks → Next Page.

Then double-click on the number of this page and check the box "Special header for the first page" (as in the previous paragraphs). Repeat this step for each page that should not have a number.

Through the "Numbering format" set the number from which to start counting. As a result, you can make sure that there is no numbering on the first five pages, and then on the sixth, the countdown starts from 1 or from 6.

Exclude pages from numbering

You can ignore some pages in the numbering, that is, skip them.

After you have numbered, click on the bottom line of the page you want to exclude. On the Layout tab, click Breaks→Next Page. After this action, this and the next page will have one digit. Now you can hide one of the numbers: double-click on it and click on the "Special Header" checkbox.

As you can see, Word has very flexible pagination settings. You can put down the numbers in just a minute.

Video on pagination in Word 2010:

One of the most common tasks that can only be encountered. Whatever you do: an essay, term paper, report or just a text - you definitely need to number all the pages. What for? Even if no one requires this from you and you are making a document for yourself, when printing (and when working with sheets further), you can easily mix up the sheets. It's good if there are 3-5 of them, but if there are 50? Can you imagine how long it will take to unravel everything?

Therefore, in this article I want to consider the question: how to number pages in Word (in the 2013 version), as well as how to number all pages except the first one. Consider everything step by step, as usual.

1) First you need to open the "INSERT" tab in the top menu. Next, the “page numbers” tab will appear on the right, after clicking on it, you can select the type of numbering: for example, from below or from above, from which side, etc. More details in the screenshot below (clickable).

2) In order for the numbering to be approved in the document, click the "Close Header and Footer Window" button.

3) Result on the face: all pages will be numbered according to the options you have chosen.

4) Now let's number all the pages except the first one. Often on the first page in reports and abstracts (and in diplomas too) there is a title page with the author of the work, with the teachers who checked the work, so there is no need to number it (many people simply cover it with putty).

To remove a number from this page, double-click on the number with the left mouse button (the title page should be the first, by the way) and in the options that open, check the box “special header for the first page”. Further on the first page you will lose the number, there you can specify something unique that will not be repeated on other pages of the document. See screenshot below.

People who use a computer for work or study periodically face the need to create or edit electronic text documents. Often there is a need for proper formatting, but not knowing how to correctly number pages in Word jeopardizes the work. For these purposes, various versions of Microsoft Word are used (as part of the Microsoft Office 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 office software packages). Detailed information has been provided for you with a description of an important stage for the correct execution of a document - numbering in Word.

In Word 2007 and 2013, continuous page numbering is automatically generated for a text file. But if the section headers differ, then the markup can be automatically put down only in the selected or current sections. You can add a feature such as a new countdown for different sections. To put it in, adhering to a certain order throughout the document, this procedure must be repeated for each subsection separately.

  1. To do this, find the "Insert" menu.
  2. Go to "Numbers".
  3. Click the "Format" button.
  4. In the "Start at" field, enter the value of the first sheet number of this section. If you wish, you can change the format of its writing.

It is more convenient to mark up text sheets when the Insert menu is used. Use it and the "Numbers" submenu.

  1. In the Numbers window, Position drop-down list, select a header or footer.
  2. The "Alignment" drop-down list provides an opportunity to choose the location in relation to the edges of the sheet.
  3. To set the layout options, click on the "Format" button and select the marking features.

The title page of the Word does not always have to have a designation. This situation arises when the countdown of a text file should not start from the first sheet, as happens when printing a report or abstract.

  1. Go to the header and footer editing section. Double click on the top or bottom margin.
  2. In the "Parameters" subsection, check the box for the topmost item "Special header and footer for the first ...".
  3. Close the editor for this subsection.
  4. When formatting a document, its countdown will start immediately from the second sheet.

From the third page

For a text file that does not require consecutive numbering starting from the first page, you can apply a break. This technique is suitable if there is not only a title page, but also the content or outline of the document. In Word, it is possible to set the parameters of the headers and footers separately for each of the sections. While in the "Work with headers and footers" menu, turn off the "As in the previous section" function.

  1. Go to the "Insert" section and select "Break".
  2. There will be an automatic transition of all text behind the cursor to a new blank sheet.
  3. An additional section is created for the text.

How to put page numbers in header

First, a little information about what footers and footers are. This is the free upper or lower part of the sheet on which text or tables are located. They may contain information such as the title of the work, the name of the author, the date of creation, and numbering. It is possible to place not only textual information on the field with a header, but also add a stamp or logo.

The location on each subsequent sheet may differ from the previous one, depending on the need. At the same time, they are formatted only in the "Working with headers and footers" constructor and in the edited text they look like a background in the margins. Using Word 2010, to get to the "Working with headers and footers" menu, double-click the left mouse button on the bottom or top margin.

There are separate commands for the bottom and top positions in the "Work with headers and footers" group. By clicking on one of them, you can see a list of ready-made templates, taking into account any preferences. To account for the number of printed sheets, templates are often used from the "Number" submenu, where you can choose the location of the field with the number, as well as its appearance.

In frame

In Word 2010, the page is numbered using a special "Frame" object. To apply it, you need to enter the header editing mode, use "Insert - Express blocks - Field" and select Page from the list of fields. Define its format and click OK. Changing the format is carried out through the menu "Insert - Headers and Footers - Number - Number Format".

What does continuous numbering mean

In a text file, automatic numbering can be carried out: for the entire volume of the document or separately for each specific section. Through means that for each page, not including the first one, one more value will be added than it was on the previous one. The countdown is performed both in Arabic numerals and in Roman (regular or small). Sometimes uppercase, lowercase Latin letters are used.

The numbering of a text file can begin with any integer, except for negative ones, set at the top or on the bottom line of the header. For documents that are supposed to be printed on both sides of the sheet, you can set the numbering on the even and odd sides, it is called mirror. If necessary, you can refuse to put the value on the first page of the text. Numeric or alphabetic reference values are displayed only for the Markup document view mode.

How to remove incorrect page markup

How to remove the numbering if it was not needed? Deletion occurs only when working with headers and footers. You need to delete a numeric or letter value on one page of the document to remove all the others. But if the parameters "separation of headers and footers of even and odd pages" are set, then the numbers will be deleted separately for each stage. If the document was divided into sections, for example, an abstract, then the numbering is deleted separately, for each part.

Numerical or alphabetic designations that were set using the "Insert" menu, then "Numbers", it is advisable to delete them along with the frame. To perform this operation, click on the number, the field frame will be displayed. Then click on the frame itself so that the markers appear. To complete the deletion, press the "Delete" button on the keyboard.

Summer has almost come - it's time not only for vacations and recreation, but also a hot time for students and pupils. Exams, diplomas, term papers - all this requires constant work with texts and electronic documents.

It would seem, what could be easier: sit yourself and press the keys on the keyboard, type your text little by little. Yes, just typing a text is very easy, but in order to successfully pass a term paper, for example, it must also be beautifully designed!
