23.09.2020

Can someone live even one day without a mobile phone? Of course not! Nowadays, young people do not even admit this possibility. The devices are constantly being improved from year to year. Manufacturers equip them with innovative technologies. Now mobile phone is a mini-computer. With its help, you can go online from anywhere, type documents and much more. The graphics and sound of modern devices are at a high level, so you can often see people playing games or listening to music.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact was introduced two years ago. It is a smaller version of the Xperia Z3. The device is designed for people who, for various reasons, do not want to buy a "shovel". Such a nickname was given to smartphones with large sizes. Surprisingly, this category of buyers sacrificed software and technical characteristics because of their size, since they had to buy the simplest models. The consumer demand for them, though small, is still there. For this reason, some manufacturers have released compact phones. The Sony trademark was no exception.

Xperia Z3 Compact (specifications, reviews and descriptions will be presented in the article) - a full-fledged smartphone. The hardware platform and software fully comply with modern requirements. At least that's what the manufacturer claims. And is this really so, let's figure it out.

Equipment

Sony has recently ditched bright packaging materials. The Xperia Z3 Compact is no exception. The box is very simple, made of unvarnished cardboard, without any frills. On it, the buyer will see a picture of the phone, the model name, a brief description. Inside, it is divided into three sections. The partitions between them are quite thin. In them, the manufacturer put a charger, the device itself, simple headphones and a USB cable. If the packing box has the D5803 index, then the headset is not included in the kit. It must be purchased additionally. The only way to reassure the buyer is that the price of the headphones is quite acceptable. Documentation must be attached to any device:

  • The user guide contains specifications for your Sony Xperia Z3 Compact phone and other useful information.
  • The warranty card is completed by the seller on the day of purchase.
  • List of service centers.

The package bundle, right off the bat, is quite modest. However, it is fully justified by the cost, which starts at 20,000 rubles. Telephones intended for sale in Ukraine are not equipped with a headset.

Appearance

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact phone has a large screen, which is a definite advantage. They were able to enlarge it by reducing the frame. Now it is very narrow (3 mm), almost invisible. Manufacturers preferred to abandon clear, straight shapes with rough angles. Now the side faces are rounded, but the rectangle is still visible. The arc is slightly curved, but this is what softens the familiar traditional design. There are two speakers. They are located symmetrically (top and bottom). The holes are the same shape. The name of the company flaunts under the top speaker. Also in this part there is a camera on the right side. There is no standard arrangement of control buttons, they are located on the screen. You can only see them by unlocking your phone. The side frame is made of polycarbonate. Due to the change in the material (previously used metal), it became possible to give the device originality due to transparency. This design decision significantly increased the status perception of the model and transferred it to the category of youth equipment.

The side edges are somewhat rough to the touch. This makes it possible to exclude slipping, so the phone can be confidently held and operated with one hand. The manufacturer claims that the polycarbonate material has excellent shock absorption properties, which act as serious protection when the smartphone falls from a height.

The design type of this model is monoblock. The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact case (the characteristics of the phone are in the article) consists of two plates and a frame. Slots for memory cards and SIM are located on the sides. Slots are closed with special caps. In order to get the cards, you just need to open them. There is a USB cable connector next to these slots. The back panel is made of glass. It only has a flash and a camera lens. The device is currently available in four colors: black, white, green, red-orange.

The phone's power and lock button is located on the side, on the right side. It is round and chrome-plated. There is a volume rocker next to it. At the bottom of the side face is a hardware camera key. You can even shoot underwater. The manufacturer has also equipped the device with a special docking station connector. The bottom has a microphone and a lanyard hole. Headphones are connected from above, the standard jack is 3.5 mm.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact: specifications

Before describing in detail the main components of a smartphone, it is necessary to dwell on the technical characteristics. Let's take a look at what the manufacturer offers in this model:

Screen

Will buyers be surprised by the display of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone? The characteristics of the screen are quite acceptable, although by modern standards the indicators are not very high. In the manual you can read the following information provided by the manufacturer:

  • Screen type - Triluminos.
  • The resolution is 1280 × 720.
  • Matrix - IPS, touch.
  • The diagonal is 4.6 ".
  • The pixel density is 319 ppi.

The special X-Reality technology is used to enhance the image. The usual screen protector is not available in this model. The manufacturer decided to use glass. Brightness settings are adjusted in two ways: automatically and manually. Multi-touch is designed for 10 simultaneous touches. The display can be operated both with wet hands and with gloves. There is a proximity sensor on the front surface. If you close it while talking on the phone, it will automatically lock the screen.

The colors are quite saturated. The display can reproduce up to 16 million colors. The viewing angles are good. When the unit is tilted 45 °, the contrast decreases. Changes occur due to the highlighted areas of black.

Sound

What sound to expect from the Sony D5803 Xperia Z3 Compact (black)? Speaker performance is not high. Unfortunately, there is no expressiveness. The sound is muffled, noises are observed. Wheezing appears when the volume is turned on maximum. Considering that there are two speakers in this model, buyers hoped for a better result.

The owners will not be happy during the conversation either. The voice of the interlocutor, although recognizable, is not clear. However, timbre and intonation are well recognized.

To play music files on the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (the characteristics of the phone are presented above), a Walkman player is used. It is equipped with standard settings and, in the opinion of audiophiles, has nothing remarkable. The only things that deserve attention are surround sound and innovative technologies xLoud and Clear Phase. You can use the ClearAudio + option to improve performance. For lovers of music tracks, the manufacturer recommends using the MDR-NC31EM headset, which guarantees a 98% noise reduction.

Camera

This model is equipped with two cameras. This no longer surprises anyone. All modern smartphones are equipped in the same way. The only difference is the resolution. Will photography enthusiasts like the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (D5803)? The characteristics of the main camera are impressive - 20.7 megapixels. It is equipped with a G Lens, 27mm autofocus. If necessary, the settings can be changed manually, choosing the best result. It is worth noting that in the automatic mode, the images are taken with a size of 3840 × 2160 pix, which corresponds to a resolution of 8 megapixels. In the settings, you can select the highest rate that will allow you to take photos of 5248 × 3936.

The owners, after testing the main camera, came to the following conclusions. The pictures are of fairly good quality. At close range, the sharpness decreases only in the corners, and then only slightly. In photographs, shadows are rendered well, noise is practically absent. The main advantage of this model is the ability to take pictures underwater.

It makes no sense to dwell on the front camera (2.2 Mp) for a long time. Its resolution means that selfie lovers will not be able to get quality pictures.

Filming

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (camera specification above) opens up great possibilities for taking videos. For example, you can record the same scene from different viewing angles, or use background sound (rain noise, birdsong, etc.). Video resolution: 4K (UHD) and 1080 p. There is a high frame rate mode. You can also use slowing effects if you want.

The wide range of video recording functions has pleased many owners. The most positive reviews were received by the shooting mode at 60 fps (resolution - 1080 r).

Software

The characteristics of the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact phone directly depend on the processor power and operating system. They influence the speed of the device. This model is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor with a Krait 400 core. The frequency is 2.5 GHz. As for the platform, the phone runs on an updated version of Google Android 4.4.4. The proprietary interface is Sony's own development. The icons and settings items are large and clear. Surprisingly, only this model has a reboot option. Previously, it was necessary to simply turn off the phone and turn it on again. The new devices have the ability to integrate with a game console, and not only a smartphone, but also a Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact can act as a screen. The characteristics of these devices are compatible with the Sony PlayStation 4. Mobile devices are capable of displaying everything that happens on the TV screen. The manufacturer has provided a special support-fastener as an additional accessory. With its help, the phone or tablet is connected to the joystick.

Battery

In modern smartphones, battery life is an important parameter. Of course, the battery is responsible for it. But not everything depends on its capacity. Also, parameters such as screen resolution, brightness level, etc. are quite important. How did the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (black) phone perform?

Battery specifications:

  • Type - lithium-ion.
  • Volume - 2600 mAh.
  • Charging time - 3 hours.
  • Standby time - about 900 hours.
  • Music playback via headset - 110 h.
  • When talking - 14 hours.

During testing of the device, the following results were obtained. It should be borne in mind that Wi-Fi was turned on on the phone.

  • Reading mode with low brightness level - 22 hours.
  • Video viewing in high format - 10 hours
  • 3D game option - 5 hours

So, these results indicate quite decent characteristics. Not every smartphone has such indicators. How was the manufacturer able to achieve them? For battery life, the screen is the main advantage. It is not very large in size and does not feature FullHD resolution. It is thanks to him that the indicators of the duration of work without recharging are so high.

Communication

This model supports network formats: 2G, 3G, 4G. You can use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to receive and transfer data. With the Internet turned on, the owners did not notice any system freezes or slowdown of the device. Data transfer can be performed at speeds up to 150 Mb / s. As for the signal of the mobile operator, the owners had no comments, the phone catches the network perfectly.

Conclusion

Describing the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact model (you now know the full specification), there is a large list of advantages. Owner reviews confirm them in 100% of cases.

Of course, there were some comments. Some owners are unhappy with the screen. You will have to agree with them, as there are some shortcomings. The replacement of the material of the side faces is also difficult to call an advantage, since the phone has lost the status of an expensive equipment. Now he is more positioned as a teenager. By the way, it's not for nothing that the manufacturer added green and orange options. They are great for young energetic people. And buyers with conservative views can opt for the classic design - white and black.

The fashion for mini-smartphones has not yet passed. Various manufacturers now and then announce smaller versions of their flagships, counting on a decent level of sales due to the sounding and catchy name. Unfortunately, in most cases this is pure, uncluttered marketing in a bad sense of the word. With flagships, mini-copies often have nothing in common, except for a distantly similar design, and their technical filling leaves much to be desired. We swam - we know.

The real mini-flagship from Sony, which appeared last year along with the Xperia Z1, has somewhat changed the attitude towards this class of devices. It really was a small copy of an older device: platform, camera - all the technical stuffing of the compact version was borrowed from the flagship. "Compact" even took over from him protection from dust and moisture. Only the dimensions and resolution of the display differed - for 4.3 inches, Full HD is simply not needed. Sony understood this - and decided not to waste resources in vain.

In our memory, Z1 Compact is one of the most productive smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.3 inches. Literally unparalleled gift for those who wanted a compact yet powerful gadget. Obviously, Sony decided to update the Compact once a year, unlike the usual Zetoks. And so that there was no lag in the serial number, the number 2 in the new generation of the "compact" had to be skipped. So welcome to the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact! Before starting testing, we note that the Z1 Compact sank to a very “tasty” fifteen thousand rubles in various online stores. For the price it is really a gift! It is all the more interesting to see if there is something in the Z3 Compact that will make the user pay about seven thousand more for it.

Appearance and ergonomics

Let's start with the obvious. Smartphones with a screen diagonal of 4.6 inches are not in vogue now - we have already begun to forget how convenient it is to use them. The Z3 Compact fits easily into any pocket and doesn't stick out of it. The device is really easy to operate with one hand - even the fair sex will not have to reach with a thumb to any of the four edges. Hands do not get tired of prolonged communication with this gadget, because it weighs less than 130 grams.

Sony engineers pleasantly surprised us by increasing the Compact's display - from 4.3 to 4.6 inches, but the dimensions of the device remained the same. They are the same for both Compact-models: 127 mm high and 65 mm wide. It is noteworthy that the thickness of the case was reduced by almost a millimeter - from 9.5 mm to 8.6 mm. In general, the Z3 Compact turned out to be even smaller than its predecessor.

The layout of the keys and connectors on the device is the same as in the vast majority of Android smartphones - you get used to the Z3 Compact very quickly. Perhaps the main innovation in terms of design can be considered the transfer of the external speaker to the front panel - the expectation that the phone is usually placed on the table "face" up, so that the speaker will not be covered.

The branded round power key, made of aluminum, is now slightly larger. Next to it is a swing button for adjusting the volume and a dedicated hardware camera key. All buttons have a short and distinct stroke.

The side faces of the new "Compact" body are made of transparent plastic. Due to this, they appear to be concave, although in reality they are, of course, convex. The inscriptions on the ends cast a shadow “deep into” the smartphone - an interesting optical effect. On the corners of the case there are special inserts that protect the case from impacts when dropped. Whether it works is unknown: we did not dare to check.

The slots for cards are hidden here under special plastic caps - in order to maintain the tightness of the structure. The device is protected against ingress of dust and moisture according to IP65 / 68 standards. The manufacturer claims that if all plugs are tightly closed, the gadget can stay in fresh water at a depth of one and a half meters for no more than thirty minutes.

Under one flap there is a Micro-USB interface and a slot for a microSD memory card, under the other there is a slot for Nano-SIM. Between them is a traditional Sony magnetic connector for connecting the device to the docking station. At the top there is a universal 3.5 mm audio jack for connecting a wired headset, and at the bottom there is a strap loop.

The "back" of the new Compact is made of glass, while its predecessor was made of plastic. Despite this, the smartphone does not slip at all in the hands, but it looks much more expensive and more interesting. previous version (the opinion of the author may not coincide with the opinion of the editorial board. - approx. ed. ). The rear panel houses the lens of the main 20-megapixel camera along with a diode flash.

The available range of colors in the Z3 Compact is its own - it does not echo either with the colors of the "regular" Xperia Z3, or with the coloring of the Z1 Compact. This season, Sony designers are joining the traditional black and white colors with a bright orange and mint green. New colors look very interesting and unusual in advertising photos. Obviously, they will resonate with young people.

pros

Full of necessary and not very functions, very advanced in terms of functionality, easy intuitive menu, device for 5+, if not for the build quality and, as it turned out, the complete lack of dealer support

Minuses

According to the reviews of servicemen, not only of the workshop where the device was repaired - frequent calls due to a factory defect or when purchased under the guise of a new repair device, even in large "grids"

Impressions

"Compact Z-3" - a full "hat" - was purchased on 12/01/14, and already on 01/18/15 the screen began to peel off from the corner and a strip appeared along the entire length of the screen on the side, the sensor did not work at first, but after the phone completely sat down , tortured by the fact that for almost two days he lived his own life (played a video, made sounds, as if he was photographing something, turned on the alarm, while the screen was "off" and due to problems with the sensor it could not be turned off) and it again charged / rebooted the touch screen worked, albeit with a strip and a screen extending from one corner of the body. And all this taking into account the fact that the device was purchased new in "Svyaznoy". Naturally, under the guarantee, he was handed over to the Sony dealership in Moscow, in the hope that Sony is a name, support for the "end user", etc., such as quality control, etc., but in the end after 30 days that he stayed there, instead of repairs, an opinion was received, not even from the manufacturer, but some third-party LLC, in which "such an independent examination was carried out" (such a "mastodon" as "Sony" turns out to be in Russia does not have its own expert institution): refusal to repair, allegedly due to water ingress, allegedly scratches and careless operation, although it was pasted over when purchased at the Svyaznoy office with films on both sides for more than 2 tr. even a guarantee separate from the device from the "Svyaznoy" and was always in a case, the device was not dropped into the water and did not go in the rain (winter is, the operation is careful, by a girl) - it was sent to an independent workshop with a good reputation, it was opened with us- verdict: in the dealership did not even open, there are no traces of water entering the device, manufacturing defects. As a result, repairs for 14.5 tr. and the loss of waterproof function as a negative "bonus" since the touch screen assembly was changed. As explained in the workshop, there are many calls with this kind of breakdown, there are frequent cases of sales even in branded network centers (M-video, Svyaznoy, Euroset) of repair devices under the guise of new or defective devices, as in our case. After that, I found out from my friends, two who bought the same devices had similar problems, although from experience with the Z-1 there were no such problems, they even filmed under water at sea, and everything is ok and not only for me. Since then, this long-suffering "Z-3 compact" seems to be working and not buggy. The verdict-dealer service, despite the high price of the gadget, is simply absent, the manufacturer does not bear any responsibility for his marriage to the buyer. Although in terms of its qualities, the device suits completely, advanced, full of functions. "Stubs" which I also use that the 4th, that the 5th dropped several times, only changed the broken glass panels, dropped them into the bath, resurrected after drying, once even poured hot coffee with 4-ku-dried, but approximately a week later, the "home" button began to fail - I had to change it for 1.5 tons.

pros

Build quality.

Speed.

The ability to increase memory.

Glass on both sides.

Waterproof.

Minuses

The above problem with a spontaneous discharge.

Impressions

After the Lumia 925, the impressions are overwhelmingly positive. I will no longer return to the wretched WP crutch, with which I took 2 years. But Sony also gave me a negative surprise.

After a month of use, the phone began to discharge very quickly (over 7 hours) in all modes, in active, in "sleeping" and even (attention) in the off (!!!) state and was constantly warm. In search of the cause of this accident, I searched all the Internet, tried to turn off everything that was possible, several times completely dropped the bodies. to the factory settings, I stitched it a couple of times by cable, through Sony's utility. In general, I took it to the service, received a fully working device in 2 weeks. To the question: "What have you done?" - received the answer: "We asked again." In general, I was glad that they did not understand, but did not understand the answer a little, because I myself stitched it 2 times.

It doesn't matter, now the phone holds a charge for 2 days in average use mode (calls 3 hours / day, some internet) and about 20-30% remains. Happy as an elephant. Yes, I also bought protective glasses for the front and back, I really like the tactile sensations from the glass and a couple of wires for magnetic charging, so as not to mess with the plugs.

Is the review helpful?

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, which replaced the compact version of the Z1 (and at the same time the usual Z2), does not seem to have innovative characteristics, but it works not that fast, but lightning fast. It can also save power, shoot sharp video and is quite compact for its diagonal ...

Packaging, equipment

The device comes in a white matte box. In addition to it, there are: charger, user manual, USB cable and warranty card.

Design

The smartphone continues the design solutions of the Z-series. This time, pink (rather coral) and green (similar to mint) were added to the black and white cases.

The phone case is rectangular, the corners are only slightly rounded for ease of use. The entire front panel is hidden protective glass Dragon trail. Above the screen on the left are sensors and a LED (now it is not placed in the speaker, but is represented by a separate "light bulb"), in the middle is one of the stereo speakers, on the right is the front camera lens. There is a second stereo speaker under the screen.

On the right side there is a round aluminum power key, under it (right in the middle) - volume control, on the bottom - cameras.

At the top left there is a micro-USB connector and under a tight cover there is a slot for a micro SD memory card, below is a docking station connector, even below is a nano-SIM slot with its own cover. The card can be inserted and removed by simply picking up the convex “bed” with your fingernail.

On the top there is a headphone jack, on the bottom there is a microphone and a hole for a lanyard.

The back panel is also covered with Dragon trail glass. Above - the lens of the main camera (at the body level), its short description and LED flash, below - the NFC icon, under it the Sony logo, even lower - XPERIA. There is no access to the battery.

Display

The smartphone received a 4.6-inch IPS-display with Triluminos Display technology and a resolution of 1280x720 pixels. It's a little strange to see a non-Full HD display in the flagship, but you can understand the logic of Sony manufacturers - lower resolution - less processor power in processing images - less battery consumption - another plus compared to the main model Z3.

Good viewing angles and excellent color reproduction are common characteristics of modern screens today. Is it possible brighter? It turns out - you can! Firstly, the phone uses LED Live Color LED for natural color display (capture of the sRGB palette by 130%). Secondly, in the "Display" section there is an item "Image enhancement", which offers two options: X-Reality for mobile, as stated in the description, raises the brightness and clarity of the image, well, and the limit mode does not need to be described. The picture on the display really becomes juicier, and in some cases even too much.

For the display, you can also select the white balance if the current settings do not suit in some way.

The display backlight is bright and of high quality. The minimum level is sufficient for everyday use.

Finally, there is the already familiar “in gloves” function for Sony.

Interface

The device has a traditional proprietary interface and runs under the latest version of Android 4.4.4.

The quick options and notification tabs are captions, not small icons. The main desktop can be regular or branded, in the latter case it is a matrix of large tiles.

Performance

The 2.5GHz processor and 2GB of RAM give the 2014 phone almost limitless possibilities.

Initially, the user has approximately 11 GB of memory available. The phone does not have an option to select memory by default, but it is possible to transfer data (only videos, music and photos) to an SD card by selecting the necessary item in the “Memory” settings menu.

The music playback quality is quite high.

Camera

The main 20.7-megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash produces great shots in all conditions, including close-up and night shooting (sensitivity up to ISO 12,800, Exmos RS 1 / 2.3 sensor).

A list of all available functions appears by pressing the icon under the shooting keys. There are over 10 pre-installed versions and new ones can be downloaded. Most of them know from previous models:

Manual option (from image size to ISO sensitivity and white balance);

Super automatic mode (minimum settings, shooting from 8 MP);

Defocusing the background;

Panorama (comes out well in trembling hands of almost any curvature);

Timeshift burst (selection of the best image from the series before and after pressing the trigger);

Artistic effect;

AR Effect (shooting with the participation of drawn objects and characters);

Timeshift video (shooting with high frequency frames and slowdown);

Sending photos to social networks and Evernote.

Among the new versions are Sound Photo (photo with sound), AR entertainment (new painted objects), multi camera (shooting with several devices from different points), with a face (inserting a face into a picture).

Photos and videos with effects are saved in separate subfolders inside the DCIM / Xperia folder: TIMESHIFT_VIDEO, AR_EFFECT, etc.

Video shooting is made with a maximum resolution of 4K - 3840x2160 pixels, if the corresponding option is enabled. Before starting recording, the phone honestly warns that it can turn off in case of overheating. A minute of recording will take about 400 MB of memory, while a standard 1080p will take 120-130. The quality of the video allows you to watch them on a large TV display.

Wireless interfaces

The smartphone contains, perhaps, all modern interfaces.

Autonomous work

In active operation mode (constant 3G synchronization, 1 hour of internet and games, half an hour of chatting, power saving modes are disabled), the phone was discharged in 8 hours 40 minutes. This is more than the market average and roughly equals a whole working day. If you use it less intensively, then you can last up to 2 days, and including the Internet if necessary - and all 3-4 days.

You can watch a movie for about 9 hours. The battery is discharged from 10% to 0 at the same rate as at higher rates.

All of this applies to normal use. To extend the operating time, several charge saving modes are provided at once.

STAMINA is a standard mode for Sony phones, here you can also select an application that is allowed to work in standby mode and turn on battery saving if the phone is often used as a watch.

The most economical option is Ultra STAMINA (it was not in other Z-smartphones), it turns off all others and takes about 15 seconds to activate. After which you find yourself on a modified desktop, and even the settings will be trimmed. Only Bluetooth and basic functions will remain available.

Outcome

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is one of the fastest smartphones on the market. It can be used in any quality, from a camera to a full-fledged media center, and loaded with any modes that Android supports.

The device went on sale at a price of 23,990 rubles.
