How to raise your social status. The social status of a person

12.11.2021

Social status is primarily the position that we occupy in society. Moreover, some things (gender, nationality, eye color) are given to us from birth, but something (professionalism, material wealth, position) has to be achieved by ourselves. Today we will talk about what our social status directly depends on - work and salary.

So, you opened a publication on employment. This alone indicates that you set out to improve your social status. Otherwise, you would have settled for the first job you came across that needed hands. However, this alignment is clearly not for you, because you want to get a certain post, and you almost know where. It is important that the vacancy is prestigious, the position is decent, the work provides an opportunity for career growth, and the salary, of course, does not go beyond certain established limits. So you have begun (still mentally) to improve your social status, even if you are looking for a job for the first time. As you know, education is one of the key components of the position in society. Thank God, the time has passed when we gave fundamental importance to the number of banknotes in your pocket. Many of those who managed to make good money in their time, later did not spare money for obtaining a diploma and even a scientific degree. A second higher education has ceased to be a fashion and has become a vital necessity.

Speaking of status, one should take into account the requirements of the environment in which a person has entered or wants to enter. These are the boundaries within which you need to be able to function. For example, without being fluent in a foreign language, or even two, you are unlikely to succeed in international company. Therefore, the second higher education (as, indeed, any other additional education) automatically leads to an increase in status. It is quite possible to engage in active self-education. This will always come in handy, at any age, because if you do not progress, the reverse process begins, that is, regression. And if you draw up a diagram for yourself (or take it from textbooks or from a teacher), you can get additional education from books. People learn foreign languages with the help of cassettes, manuals, etc.

However, "jumping" from a low status to a high one without professional knowledge and the presence of a certain level of culture is almost unrealistic. Nothing but a stupid artificial planting will work here. Molière wrote about this. It's like putting a tailcoat on a man who's been cutting wood all his life and making him play the violin. Another thing is if the woodcutter makes an effort and learns to play himself, so much so that he will be taken to a symphony orchestra. In general, in order to establish yourself in society, you need to desire this and, of course, make appropriate efforts. If you want to become a boss from an ordinary manager, please be kind enough to comply. It is necessary to consider absolutely specifically what knowledge and skills you lack. Let's say you're an expert in your business. Study business psychology. Are you like a fish in water? So work on your image.

The latter, by the way, is quite important for everyone who wants to improve their status. In one department of a large company, two people worked in equal positions. The department, in fact, had not yet been formed, and it was already necessary to travel to meetings and other events. For some reason, the chief always took only one employee with him. He explained his choice not by the fact that this employee works better, but by the fact that the subordinate has an appropriate image and communication skills with people. So the representative look, charisma and culture are not empty words. And if you, a simple manager, are applying for the position of leader, please look accordingly. The image will come in handy in the interview. You still won’t demonstrate your knowledge in a short time, but a presentable appearance and demeanor will say even more about you than is necessary for making a decision. How many times have you heard from interviewers: “As soon as he entered, I immediately understood: this is our new head of the department!” Note - "just entered"!

An important issue is the issue of wages. Of course, a person who earns well can afford to live with dignity. Well, isn't it humiliating, for example, when a healthy man with arms and legs is not able to buy a new car and can only swear if the old one breaks down and there is no money for repairs! And you need to scold not an innocent means of transportation that cannot live forever, but yourself, sorry, a fool, unable to earn properly. By the way, a car is also an indicator of your status. Therefore, the desire for a higher salary is also the desire for a higher status. “Yes, how can you earn money here, there are no decent positions for my profession,” you object and begin to explain why you, so beautiful, are barred from the path to a solid salary. Nonsense. By reasoning this way, you are subconsciously programming yourself to fail. Initially, you need to set yourself a goal. Just do not be limited to the established numbers. Let's say your goal is to improve your position in society. It will depend on what steps and actions will have to be taken.

Anyone, absolutely anyone can find a use for a worthy reward. So, in our yard for many years a certain Sergeyich worked as a janitor, who simply adored cleanliness and order. Somehow, unnoticed, he disappeared. It turned out that he was taken to his “hacienda” by my former classmate who made a good career in the trading business. First of all, he asked Sergeyich how much he received, and promised much more ... And one medical worker hated the laboratory of the clinic, where she was assigned after school. They pay a penny, the equipment is old, there are no elementary shoe covers and gloves ... Moreover, she really liked to do clinical diagnostic tests, and she perfectly understood their importance for human health. After learning a little, the girl got a job in a private clinic, in a laboratory with the latest equipment. Now her salary is ten times higher!

... And even a schoolboy knows that low social status has a noticeable impact on health and life expectancy. Scientists say that, for example, male 170 cm tall, embedded in the human genome, with poor nutrition and the influence of harmful environmental factors, will never become themselves, but with a successful scenario, they can turn into 185! The results of a study of twins with the most impressive difference in social status (however, only 17 pairs of twins agreed to this) showed that at an average age (about 46 years), female losers were seven years older than their socially successful sisters in biological age. Although in fairness it is worth citing other data: since the 70s of the last century, scientists have monitored the health of British civil servants, “sorting” them by occupation. It turned out that the “sixes”, who spent their whole lives at the base of the service pyramid (that is, secretaries and couriers), are threatened with heart disease much less often than their superiors. It is understandable: less responsibility - less worries. The researchers called this pattern status syndrome ( status syndrome).

Moreover, even the most successful residents of the most developed country are not immune from the status syndrome. And here it is worth looking at the problem globally. The wealthy US, for example, has a per capita gross national income of approximately $34,000 and an average life expectancy of 76.9 years. Not quite, to put it mildly, prosperous, but proud Cuba, with its gross national income of $ 5,200, boasts an almost "American" life expectancy - an average of 76.5 years. And Japan, with its record average life expectancy of 81.3 years, has a gross national income of about 25 thousand dollars. That is, not only relations in society, the education system and social cohesion are defining moments, it is also important to take into account the location ( geography). Everyone knows, for example, that far from rich highlanders are champions among centenarians.

In addition, it must be said that a person striving for a higher status must necessarily monitor his health. Today, in some places it is simply indecent to appear with problem teeth. Dentistry has reached such a level that all troubles can be eliminated in a few visits to the doctor. However, it costs money ... and sometimes a lot. I won’t be surprised if appearance problems (for example, bags under the eyes and wrinkles) will soon be considered an indicator of low social status ... Therefore, even if your salary does not allow you to fork out for health, get treated and correct defects ... on credit. This will be a kind of incentive to increase your income.

Do not forget only that you live in a society and according to its laws. It's good when a person takes an example from someone, trying not to imitate, but to achieve the same impressive success on their own. Another thing is when someone is jealous, angry and tries by hook or by crook to take away the attributes of star status from a colleague or competitor. And it's really bad when someone, imagining himself as a bright individual, does not consider it necessary to take into account the experience of previous generations. Aiming forward, higher, do not forget that you are a person. Believe in yourself - and luck will smile at you!

"We met by clothes. We were also badly seen ... "(Folk) /

It is not so important where and in what area we work, and what income we have. One day we come to the conclusion that we deserve more.

And we understand that in order to move to a new level, it is not enough to be a competent specialist, you also need to broadcast to others that we deserve it. Let's talk about the external attributes of status (position in society).

There are people who know how to look convincing from birth, but there are real specialists and talented employees who cannot "present" themselves.

Unfortunately, the saying "They are greeted by clothes, they are escorted by mind", doesn't always work.

British and American scientists have studied how long it takes for us to form the first impression of a person. It turned out, in the first 13 milliseconds! So it is rather true that " No one gets a second chance to make a first impression."

Studies have shown that those Americans who look better than 67% of those around them, on average, earn $230,000 more in a lifetime.

Because likable employees are more confident and trustworthy, employers tend to believe they are more capable. In one of the conducted experiments, "employers" paid more attractive "employees" an average of 10% higher salaries.

Why does it work? This " halo effect" (halo effect) when we attribute characteristics to attractive people that they may not have, based on the overall impression (halo).

The good news is: forewarned is forearmed. Here are some tips to help you raise your status in society through external attributes.

Find a role model

Young artists copy the masterpieces of masters to learn, young writers copy famous novels by hand, novice traders repeat the actions of successful colleagues in order to learn how to trade on the stock exchange.

Find a person from the environment in which you want to succeed, and "write off the words." Watch how he dresses, what status items he wears, how he behaves (if you are a woman, take a successful woman as a model, do not try to copy men).

Imitate the person, but try to be yourself in everything you do. Keep your individuality. Emulate him or her until you become a role model yourself; so you know you've made it.

Image: become "your"

The laws of society are such that people perceive us according to the principle " own - someone else's". People tend to treat better those who look like them. If we are "ours", then we can do everything. If we are "strangers", they do not trust us. Therefore, our task is to integrate into the environment in which we want to be.

Be adequate! The style you choose should match your environment. Business suits or casual wear? Bright accessories or modest in appearance, but high-quality items of clothing? Smartphone or expensive diary? Not worth spending a lot of money, but if in your environment it is important which email, operating system or the method of communication you use, you need to pay attention to this.

Invest in good and comfortable clothes, shoes and accessories. All this should help you, "sell" you, and not interfere. It is very important that your appearance said no" look how much better i am than you", a " I am here and I deserve you".

Watch your health

We have already learned that society prefers outwardly attractive people. But it's hard to look attractive while looking unhealthy. If our goal is to increase income and status, it makes sense to invest in our health and maintain it at the level.

External signs of health are beautiful hair, healthy teeth (which means a beautiful smile), a healthy back (which means good posture), normal weight (which means a slim figure).

A person with good posture seems taller, and scientists confirm tall people earn more. Among working Americans between 170 and 180 cm tall, each inch (2.54 cm) of "extra" growth corresponds to an average increase in annual earnings of 2%. And tall people are much more often appointed to leadership positions. Therefore, for women, high heels are a must-have footwear for moving up the career ladder.

Voice below

We have inherited this feeling from our ancestors. The chest timbre is perceived by us as a sign of superiority, therefore its owners are automatically recorded as "leaders". And you have to use it!

Few have a pleasant velvety timbre, but in order to increase your status, you just need to learn how to lower the timbre of your voice, especially if you want to influence the situation and decision. Some women find it difficult to lead because their high voice is not taken seriously by others, it seems childish. Young men with high voices are also unconvincing. But you can work on your voice and learn how to choose a timbre depending on the situation.

Margaret Thatcher herself took public speaking lessons to make her voice less shrill.

And finally, tip number 5!

slow down

This is paradoxical and does not correspond to our nature. It is so important for us to win authority, trust, a place in society, we strive for this so much that, when we get excited, we begin to speak faster and louder, gesticulate and move a lot. People do not take seriously those who shout loudly and talk a lot.

A true leader speaks little and does not waste energy on unnecessary movements.

Each phrase and conclusion is like a stone thrown into water: well-aimed, weighty, significant, with circles on the water (when what is said forces others to think and look for solutions). If you want to be convincing, stop, pause, listen a lot, ask questions, watch your facial expressions. Search the Internet and try the Calm Presence exercise to achieve the desired state.

Social status as an indicator of well-being

The social structure of the world in which humanity lives today is governed by various sets of rules in all areas of human relations. From how and with what we brush our teeth to the way we drive, our world is very predictable. This predictability is determined by the social structure of any society. The social structure unites people into society, it also puts everything and everyone in its place, and also determines: what, how and why we do every day of our lives. Without this, uncontrolled chaos and anarchy would reign in human society.

The social structure directs people to perform everyday tasks and gives direction - how we should perform these tasks.

In a broad sense, social status refers to the position a person occupies in society. It provides the individual with certain rights and privileges, on the other hand, it also puts forward its obligations, which its owner is forced to fulfill.

High social status is perceived by many as synonymous with success in life. This analogy, of course, is not without foundation, but from the point of view of a deep understanding of the issue, everything is a little more complicated.

According to psychologists, social status seems to be the most important stimulus and motivating force of social behavior: it is known that the more noticeable disproportions in status, the more people care about its increase. Here we are talking not only about the material side of the issue - each person, voluntarily or involuntarily, reflects on the place that he occupies in relation to his peers, colleagues, acquaintances or even family members.

You may be interested in:

There are two levels of social status:

1 Private- this is what place we occupy in a small (primary) social group (family, school, university, etc.) due to personal characteristics and how others evaluate our individual qualities.

2 Social group- the position of a person that he occupies in a large social group. It is understood as belonging to a particular profession, social class, nation, race.

Such characteristics as prestige and authority are very closely intertwined with the concept of status. Prestige is how we are evaluated in comparison with others, what honor and respect we enjoy against the background of the rest. Prestige largely depends on the system of values prevailing in society. Authority is the degree of recognition by others of our personal and business qualities. In general, the line between these concepts is quite thin.

How to improve your social status?

Social status includes a number of standard components, by working with which you can improve your personal attractiveness and significance in society.

Attractive appearance and open body language- irreplaceable components of a person who is determined to win over others. For successful people it is important to take care of yourself, keep your body in shape, constantly keep your posture and not be “squeezed”.

Social intuition and interaction with others especially important for your status. It is necessary to communicate as much as possible, expand the circle of acquaintances and establish profitable communications. But it is important that commercialism in this case does not take precedence over sincerity.

Sense of humor- a powerful tool in interpersonal relationships. Knowing how to sparkle with jokes, you will be able to resolve difficult communicative situations, reduce the degree of tension in communication and are guaranteed to win over those around you.

Influence and self-confidence- Mandatory components of high social status. In order to look influential and authoritative in the eyes of others, it is important to have inner steadfastness, be restrained and not resort to impulsive actions. People are not inclined to take seriously those who scream loudly, change their principles and beliefs.

Low social status: a vicious circle and how to get out of it

Psychologists note that people with low social status are prone to more aggressive behavior and more vigilant psychological defense - which is explained by the phenomenon of compensation. Such people are more sensitive to social exclusion and more likely to monitor their environment for threats. Because of this vigilance to protect their sense of self, they tend to react violently to personal threats and insults.

This behavior is all the more unfortunate because people achieve higher social status in a completely different way: on the basis of benevolent and generous behavior towards others, they manage to increase their value to their group. Some psychologists generally consider generosity to be the key to status. People tend to attribute such individuals to a higher social group. In other words, value to one's group and selflessness are the best way to increase one's status.

This is the bare minimum, but that's not all. In experiments and observations, it was noted that these qualities will be noticed by others only in relation to those persons who are already integrated into this social group. Social connectedness is the next necessary condition on the path to raising one's status.

People with low social status (or those who consider it so), in an attempt to raise their own value in their own eyes, often activate psychological defense mechanisms, which subsequently take the form of hostile and aggressive behavior, which ultimately leads to further aggravation of his personal situation.
