Scriptlet Doctor

For the attention of users of Firefox Quantum, Firefox Legacy, Pale Moon, Basilisk and other browsers from the Firefox family.

Interesting information has appeared on the "board", but since it is not recommended to place links to that site here, I will cite excerpts from there.

As has been discussed many times, in the uBlock Origin + Firefox bundle there is a problem with rules that require scriptlets to be executed on sites with strict CSP rules (in particular, on Yandex and its satellites), which can be partially solved using Tampermonkey. Unfortunately, this solution is not suitable for Firefox-legacy (pre-quantum) and Goanna browsers (Pale Moon, Basilisk), so the idea arose to make a separate add-on specifically for this task, which would not have such restrictions.

As a result of the experiments, the Scriptlet Doctor extension appeared, which was tested and approved dimisa, the author of RU AdList, and is recommended for use for options 2 and 3 instructions for using filters RU AdList. The Scriptlet Doctor add-on is available for both Legacy browsers and current versions of Firefox. By default, it is active only for Yandex domains, but the list can be edited by yourself in the settings (quick access to settings: Ctrl + click on the add-on button in the toolbar).

When installing the script RU AdList JS Fixes no longer needed.

EasyList (main filter)

+ RU AdList Fixes
The Anticounter added in this version is a kind of Runet analogue of EasyPrivasy. When these two filters are turned on at the same time, basically the same rules are triggered. But if in runet EasyPrivasy is the main supplier of false positives, then the Anti-counter is devoid of this drawback.

EasyList (main filter)
RU AdList / RU AdList for uBlock Origin
Adblock Warning Removal List (aka Antiadblock)
Counters (aka RU AdList: Counters, Anti-counter)
BitBlock (aka RUS: BitBlock List, blocks garbage and social networks)
+ RU AdList Fixes
Only Bitblock is added here (read the description!), But this is a very voluminous filter that includes (and corrects) Fanboy's Social + rules for the Russian Internet, both social and anti-garbage. Contrary to popular belief that social filters are difficult to use social networks - this is not the case. All blocking rules usually operate only on third-party resources, for example || vk.com/widget_community.php$third-party will block the loading of the widget and its frame everywhere except vk.com, it is responsible for this option "third-party" Therefore, Bitblock users will not have any problems with VK and other networks.

I will add on my own. Some people think it can't be used in legacy browsers. Perhaps this is the opinion of RU AdList developers, who believe that Greasemonkey cannot cope with this task. But this is not the case. I installed it in Pale Moon and I must say that this "monkey" works fine both with RU AdList JS Fixes and with other scripts.

Those users of Firefox, Pale Moon, Basilisk, etc. who install RU AdList JS Fixes to combat ads and Yandex directives should pay attention to Scriptlet Doctor. This extension allows you to solve the above tasks by the forces of uBlock Origin itself, without connecting additional scripts, so Scriptlet Doctor is easier for the browser than the Tampermonkey / Greasemonkey + RU AdList JS Fixes bundle.
I do not use Yandex sites and services, so I cannot say which option is more effective in practice, Scriptlet Doctor or RU AdList JS Fixes.

As the venerable says JustOff(the author of the new extension),

UnBlock Origin for Yandex Browser: features, how to use, version for Android

The problem of intrusive advertising on the Internet is known to all users, without exception, both on mobile and stationary platforms. UnBlock Origin for Yandex browser is an opportunity to get rid of annoying ads on the network, providing a comfortable surfing in the full version of the browser and on Android. The extension is actively developing, developers regularly release security updates and block various workarounds for displaying banners.

A little about the UnBlock extension

UnBlock Origin is the brainchild of developer Raymond Hill, the thought behind the plugin. Freely redistributable and open source. The extension can be used on various platforms and browsers, in addition to the Yandex browser, there are analogues in Opera, Chrome, Chromium, Firefox and Edge.

We paid attention to the expansion not only because of the high-quality blocking, but also the presence of positive reviews from technology sites. The main idea of the founder boils down to the ability to filter content and set his own rules for selecting incoming traffic.

It is worth delving into history a little. During the development of the project, Chris Adjudi was involved, with whom Raymond did not agree ideologically, they had to split up. The clean version of unBlock for Yandex browser remained with Chris, and the founder is in charge of the Origin version. uBlock is an undeveloped project, the last version was released back in 2015, and Origin is maintained and updated regularly.

It is important to remember that the site ublock.org belongs to Chris Adjudi, all donations through it will not be directed to the developer of the modern version.

Advantages and disadvantages

Among the advantages of the plugin:
  • Performance. Technological sites, together with users, conducted a performance test (back in 2015), which showed a significant decrease in the required resources for the addon to work. Of the ten extensions studied, uBlock Origin is the most resource-efficient. To achieve this result, a special approach was used - checking the necessary styles for the page and cutting off the rest of the elements. The plugin does not take a standard style sheet as a basis, but immediately defines filters and connects them;
  • Ease of use. The add-on has built-in syntax support from the popular AdBlock Plus and has efficient filter tables loaded by default. Immediately after installation, the extension starts working without requiring any required settings, but there is such an option;
  • Additional functions. Supports tracking protection, prevents the loading of sites that are on the Malware or anti-phishing list. Supports dynamic blocking of scripts and frames, there is a function to manually remove items from sites. We will discuss the function in more detail later;
  • Comprehensive ad protection. The extension has 4 filter lists by default: EasyList, EasyPrivacy, Malware-sites, the list of blocking ad servers from Peter Lowe;
  • There is a complete guide to using and writing block lists.

To assess the presence of deficiencies, it is enough to study the rest of the proposals in the field of ad blocking. According to the results of use, the extension in terms of its ability to block third-party banners is not inferior to the popular AdBlock and AdGuard, but remains a faster option. There are all the necessary additional functions here, there are no restrictions, the plugin is constantly being developed, but it does not work in the mobile version of the Yandex browser. With high pickiness, the lack of a Russian-speaking leadership can be called a disadvantage.

How to install unBlock Origin in Yandex browser?

Such an arsenal of functions unBlock Origin makes the tool really powerful and flexible in customization, but the plugin also has additional parameters. They can be opened by right-clicking on the extension icon and selecting "Settings" or by clicking on the "Open Control Panel" item in the plug-in pop-up window after clicking on the icon.

Additional settings:

After installing the plugin, it is possible to completely eliminate graphic and text ads on sites. If you missed any banners, you can easily remove them manually. The developer's slogan - "for users from users", reflects the concern and high efficiency of the extension.

Along with advertising, uBlock Origin also blocks notifications of possible cyber attacks

Over the past few years, ad blockers have become very popular due to the growth in the volume of advertising content being placed on websites. But as it turned out, such products are also not without flaws. Experts managed to find an interesting feature of one of the most popular ad blockers, which can be dangerous for users.

The problem was discovered by specialist Scott Helme. He researches security problems of various software products and other tools, including those used in browsers. This time, the ad blocker uBlock Origin came to our attention. It is very popular among users, so the problem described by Scott is urgent and very serious.

The fact is that when uBlock Origin is activated in any of the popular browsers, not only advertising content is blocked, but also the CSP tool, which is responsible for the content protection policy and prevents the injection of malicious JavaScript code and the commission of XSS attacks.

The main task of the Content security policy is to send notifications to site administrators that an attack was attempted on their resource.

CSP blocking in popular browsers such as Chrome and Firefox does not always happen. For example, it is applied if any of the scripts related to the user's privacy are running and active on the page. It could even be a Google Analytics script.

It is not so easy to notice this blocker function. Hemle stumbled upon it by accident when he discovered that more than one attack attempt report was not being sent on his website. As it turned out later, the ad blocker was to blame.

After a detailed study of the problem, it became clear that browsers in which uBlock Origin is activated simply do not send warnings to administrators. It turns out that developers may not even know that someone outside has attempted to break the code. In this case, administrators will not even know if their resource is compromised.

According to one of the developers of the plugin, Raymond Hill, if the user does not agree with such a blocker policy, then he can easily change it, although he will have to do it manually. To do this, add the required script to the list of exclusions of the extension. After that, CSP reports will start sending again.

Helme is confident that this feature is not necessary in the ad blocking extension, but Hill disagreed with his opinion. He is confident that CSP reports can pose a threat to users, as reports with all data are sent to a third-party server. He called these reports a simple marketing ploy that helps site owners customize their resources, but in no way help solve user problems.

A real discussion has flared up around this topic, which is still ongoing. There were supporters of both one and the other side. But in the course of this dispute, Hill said that this problem should be thoroughly studied. He promised to do this and consider blocking not all CSP reports, but only those that pose a serious threat to user privacy.

uBlock Origin - Add-ons for Firefox

µBlock is an efficient blocker: it uses less RAM and less CPU usage, while using more filters than other popular blockers.

Illustrated overview of its effectiveness: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/uBlock-vs.-ABP:-efficiency-compared

Usage: Click the big Enable button in the dropdown to enable or disable uBlock for the current site. This only applies to the current site, not everyone.

While flexible, it is more than just an "ad blocker": it can also read and create filters from host files.

By default, the following filter lists will be loaded and applied:

Other lists are also available to choose from:

Fan Enhanced Watchlist - Dan Pollock Host File - hpHosts Ad & Tracking Servers - MVPS HOSTS - Spam404 - Etc.

Of course, the more filters, the higher the memory usage. However, even after adding three additional lists, uBlock₀ still consumes less memory than other popular blockers.

Also keep in mind that some of these lists have a high probability of breaking the website, especially those created from host files.

Without predefined filter lists, this extension is nothing. So, if you really want to contribute, consider the people diligently supporting the filter lists provided to you for free.

Recently, there have been so many advertisements on the Internet that it has become quite problematic to find a web resource that has hosted at least a moderate amount of advertisements. If you are tired of annoying ads, the uBlock Origin extension for the Google Chrome browser will come in handy.

uBlock Origin is an extension for the Google Chrome browser that allows you to block any type of advertising that occurs while surfing the web.

You can either download uBlock Origin directly from the link at the end of the article, or find it yourself through the extension store.

To do this, click on the browser menu icon and in the displayed list go to "Additional Tools" - "Extensions" .

Go down to the very end of the page and open the item "More extensions" .

When the Google Chrome extension store loads on the screen, enter the name of the extension you are looking for in the search box in the left pane of the window - uBlock Origin .

In the block "Extensions" the extension we are looking for will be displayed. Click to the right of it on the button "Install" to add it to Google Chrome.

As soon as the uBlock Origin extension is installed in Google Chrome, the extension icon will appear in the upper right area of the browser.

How do I use uBlock Origin?

By default, uBlock Origin is already activated, so you can feel the effect by going to any web resource that was previously full of ads.

If you click once on the extension's icon, a small menu will appear on the screen. The largest expansion button allows you to control the expansion activity.

In the lower area of the program menu, there are four buttons that are responsible for activating individual elements of the extension: enabling or disabling pop-up windows, blocking large media elements, the operation of cosmetic filters, and managing third-party fonts on the site.

The program also has advanced settings. To open them, click on the miniature gear icon in the upper left corner of uBlock Origin.

The window that opens contains tabs "My rules" and "My filters" aimed at experienced users who want to fine-tune the work of the extension to suit their requirements.

Ordinary users will need the tab "White list" , where you can list web resources for which the extension will be disabled. This is necessary in cases where the resource refuses to display content with an active ad blocker.

Unlike all the extensions for blocking ads in the Google Chrome browser that we reviewed before, uBlock Origin has impressive functionality that allows you to fine-tune the work of the extension for yourself. Another question is that an ordinary user does not need all this abundance of functions, but even without referring to the settings, this add-on does an excellent job with its main task.

uBlock is another extension for blocking ads on the sites you visit. According to the statements of Raymond Hill, the project developer, and comments from some users, uBlock differs from its counterparts in that it uses less memory, processor resources and is generally lighter in weight. For example, here are the memory consumption statistics from the authors:

And here are some more impressive CPU load figures:

The weirdness began this month when a new alternative extension of the same name appeared in the Chrome Web Store. At the same time, the original extension was first renamed to uBlock₀, then completely disappeared from the catalog and only after some time returned under the name uBlock Origin.

It is quite understandable why, in this situation, many users began to ask questions and even accuse the newer extension of fraud. But what actually happened?

Transfer of rights

Raymond Hill (gorhill), the original developer of uBlock, commented on the situation some time later.

This is how however more and more of my time was spent, and no doubt it would just become worst as uBlock gained popularity. So I was getting sucked into something I never intended to do.

The uBlock project was created by Raymond as a hobby and mostly for himself. He wanted to create an extension that would suit his needs. And no more. It turned out that uBlock became extremely popular (almost 1 million users in the Chrome Web Store). He had neither the time nor the desire to support and develop the extension in accordance with the requirements of the users. So he decided to transfer the title "uBlock" and the main GitHub repository to Chris Aleodi.

At the same time, Raymond will continue to support the now fork of the main branch. This fork, in fact, is the last version of the extension that will receive mostly fixes. New functions will be added only when he himself feels the need for them. And what's most interesting. This fork will continue to live in the Chrome Web Store at the old address and with the entire current user base. It only changed its name: now it's uBlock Origin. While Chris had to publish the second extension, which gained about 55 thousand users in a month.

The new uBlock (from Chris) and the old uBlock Origin (from Raymond) will continue to exist and develop independently. Although at the moment these extensions are almost copies, in the near future their paths, interface and capabilities may differ greatly.

What about deletion from the Web Store?

At the very beginning, we wrote that the original extension disappeared from the Chrome Web Store catalog, and then returned under a new name. Some time after the publication of the new uBlock extension from Chris, the old one was removed from the catalog by moderators, allegedly due to violations of the rules of the service.

At the same time, Raymond did not receive any notifications from Google, and even after contacting support, no one was able to explain to him the reason, referring to the fact that all the details are described in the letter that he should have received (but did not receive). Let's leave aside the quality of the Chrome Web Store moderation (you understand everything yourself ...).

The Chrome store is ridiculous. They should just be straightforward and state the reason of why the extension is taken down right in the dashboard. What "s so difficult about this?

The author never received a response to his request, but tried again to send uBlock for moderation, this time changing the name to uBlock Origin and the icon (at the very beginning of our post you can see the new icon). And the extension was missed.

Recently, a little drama has played out between the old and new authors of the expansion. The essence is very simple. Chris wrote on the extension's page that it was "current uBlock project development by Chris". Raymond was offended by this, believing that Chris thus wants to appropriate all the laurels for himself. True, then they made up. Chris even posted a video of his apology. And the authorship signature was changed to "Project currently managed by Chris".

Ok, so where and how to download uBlock?

If you want to continue using the original extension, which will most likely develop exclusively towards fixes, then install uBlock Origin.

If you are interested in new opportunities, and you want to become a part of the community, offer your ideas, then it is better to pay attention to the new uBlock.

It's time to take stock. uBlock Origin continues to live with a new large audience, but uBlock seems to be bent. Users ran after the real author.

One of the main disadvantages of surfing the Internet is annoying ads. It pops up in different parts of the web page and makes it difficult to find meaningful content. Moreover, it is distracting when watching videos. And some of the banner ads are downright immoral.

However, some Internet users have already forgotten when they last saw so many annoying ads. Today, there are many plugins and extensions available for different browsers that block any ad in any form. Among them uBlock Origin.

The uBlock Origin extension works on browsers, including, in addition, there are versions for Opera and Firefox. The plugin automatically blocks pop-up ads on pages and when watching videos, using constantly updated filter databases from various resources. In addition, the user can manually block any element of the web page. Creation of a whitelist with exceptions is available.

Features of the plugin uBlock Origin for Yandex, Chrome:

  • Blocking various types of advertisements;
  • Regular update of filters taken from various resources;
  • Compatibility with Chromium browsers (Yandex, Google Chrome, etc.);

  • Manual blocking of any elements on the page.

The plugin is distributed free of charge and is available for download in any online store of your browser extensions.
