But everyone’s cameras are different - and all manufacturers vying with each other to claim that theirs is the best. In this case, how can you choose a smartphone with a good camera - and not make a mistake? We decided to check how the 2016 flagships actually take pictures in different shooting conditions.

To begin with, a few words about each of the smartphones we selected.

It goes without saying that when mobile photography is mentioned, the proud hashtag #iphoneonly comes to mind. Indeed, the camera on the iPhone is a cool thing! A 12 megapixel matrix and f/2.2 aperture optics, complemented by an optical stabilization system, make all the difference when it comes to shooting in any conditions.

You can shoot with it only in the mode - as the smartphone wishes, because the user is not trusted with any manual control mode, or even the simplest settings. There are, of course, third-party applications for controlling the camera, but we are evaluating the custom option, which the user receives without unnecessary hassles and searches. Therefore, objectively think about what is more important to you - high-quality instant photography with auto settings or options for settings, for which you should kindly go to smartphones on Android.

The highlight of the Huawei P9 is the presence of a monochrome camera, but since other smartphones don’t have it in principle, no comparative pictures were taken. It is needed mainly to make the picture more contrasty and clear, especially in low light conditions. The matrix in both cameras is 12 megapixels, optics with an aperture ratio of 2.2, so photographs are obtained well even in relatively dark conditions.

There is a separate “Pro” mode, which allows you to adjust such important shooting parameters as ISO, shutter speed, and also manually select focus.

The cameras in Samsung flagships have long been the almost undisputed leader in quality among all smartphones. The Samsung S7 has a 12 megapixel camera with extremely fast f/1.7 optics. In addition, the camera is equipped with an optical stabilization system, so taking pictures at night is just the S7's strong point.

The settings options in manual mode are no less than those of the Huawei P9 - with a certain amount of knowledge about photography, you will get pictures that are head and shoulders above standard photos in auto mode.

Sony has the largest sensor in our selection - 23 megapixels compared to modest 12-16 megapixel sensors of competitors seem to be the ultimate dream of a photographer, because bigger is better!

In fact, the camera is really good, but, like the iPhone, it is absolutely devoid of any settings, even in the so-called “pro mode”. The only variable setting in it is ISO - it is set manually only at a resolution of 8 megapixels. And if you have a 23 megapixel sensor, you don’t want to reduce the photo quality to 8. So in photographs we completely rely on automation.

The LG G5 is distinguished by two main cameras at once: the first, “most basic” one - with a 16 MP sensor and f/1.8 lenses, the second, additional one - simpler - with an 8 MP sensor, designed for shooting panoramas thanks to a wide-angle lens.

To please all customers, there are three interface modes - without settings, basic settings and professional. Pro mode gives you access to a large number of settings.

Testing

For the purity of the experiment, all photographs were taken in automatic mode, because the degree of adjustment for Sony and iPhone is much less than for the other three participants in our selection, and we are interested in the most objective comparison of smartphone cameras.

We decided to test four key areas for using the main camera of a smartphone - landscape photography, macro and product photography, and portraits. By comparing the results of each camera in these situations, you can choose a smartphone for landscape travel photography, shooting unrealistic macro shots, or maintaining the perfect hipster Instagram with coffee and product photography.

We did not include shooting at night in our list because for good results it requires additional accessories, and handheld shooting, even with good optics and the photosensitivity of the matrix in a smartphone, is still far from ideal. And few people will purposefully buy a smartphone for the sake of beautiful night photography.

Scenery

The Huawei P9 and iPhone 6s plus handled the landscape best - even with a significant zoom in on the finished image, the foliage on the trees remains clearly distinguishable, but Samsung, LG and Sony produced a similar undetailed picture.

Smartphone Huawei P9 Black

In terms of direct picture quality, iPhone and Huawei are also leaders - they have the widest dynamic range in the photo, the sky is not overexposed, and the shadows do not look like black gaps, even without using the HDR mode. Such a picture itself is ready for publication on Instagram without the use of additional filters, and during post-processing, due to the absence of overexposure, it gives the mobile photographer more scope for retouching.

Macro

All smartphones did an excellent job with macro photography. The main difference was in the minimum focusing distance - Samsung and Huawei took first place, but the Sony Z5 was ready to focus furthest from the subject.

Samsung and LG show the most impressive results in terms of focusing accuracy, photo sharpness and depth of dark colors, while color reproduction is most correct in photos from Samsung and Huawei. For some reason, Sony's auto settings made the photo oversaturated and too bright, so that the white petals became blown out. Perhaps this is a one-time situation, however, in the absence of the ability to adjust the image, auto mode failures are extremely undesirable for the user.

It is also worth noting that when manually focusing, the image in the Samsung galaxy S7 is scaled to correctly select the focus point - so you definitely won’t miss! No other smartphone offers this magical option. In macro photography, this is very important for placing accents in the photo, especially given the “habit” of the smartphone to focus further or on larger objects.

Object shooting

At different aperture values, the depth of field turns out to be approximately the same, so chasing numbers in this case is useless, plus or minus. The product photographs taken separate the subject from the background equally well, so that the image turns out expressive and three-dimensional.

Huawei, Samsung and iPhone cameras demonstrate the highest level of detail and image clarity at the edges of objects. The Sony camera is characterized by excessive noise reduction even at low ISO values, which is why the image “floats” when viewed closely, while the Huawei camera in auto mode makes the image a little oversaturated. Such minor flaws are easily corrected during photo post-processing using almost any editor.

Portrait

The Samsung camera did the best job with portraits, especially considering the difficult shooting conditions - direct sunlight and the white “skin” of our model. The model is drawn clearly, with a precise outline separating it from the background.

The LG and Huawei cameras performed best in terms of exposure compensation, avoiding unnecessary overexposure of the illuminated areas, although I would still give the first place in this parameter to the LG camera for its high-quality shadow processing - in Huawei they became less saturated. When using the advanced shooting mode, you can eliminate this shortcoming by slightly reducing the shutter speed so that the photo as a whole becomes a little darker.

Results

As you can see, each camera has its own shooting features. This needs to be taken into account when you choose a smartphone specifically for the purpose of succeeding in mobile photography.

For portraits and product photography, you should definitely pay attention to the Samsung Galaxy S7; the LG G5 SE and Huawei P9 also perform well in this genre.

For those who focus on photographing distant objects and landscapes, and are also interested in travel photography, we recommend taking a closer look at the iPhone 6s Plus and Huawei P9. They deliver great image detail for panoramas and distant subjects, and handle direct sunlight and low-light shooting well, so you can count on your smartphone camera whenever you need it.

Depending on the degree of your trust in the auto mode, you can divide smartphones for fans of “full automatic” - iPhone 6s Plus and Sony Z5 - and fans of manual settings - Huawei P9, Samsung S7 and LG G5 SE. The convenience of the latter is that they also have an automatic mode, so you can use them either way.

It should be noted that Sony is a blunder in optimizing smartphones for MediaTek chipsets, so the Xperia M5 has been annoying customers with various “glitches” for a long time; by today’s standards, the Helio X10 processor is slow, and it does not work at its maximum capabilities in the M5. The case heats up with or without reason, autonomy leaves much to be desired. But the proprietary shell is comfortable, the cameras are high-quality, the display is bright and clear, and the prestige of such a smartphone in “glamorous” circles is much higher than that of any Huawei or Xiaomi. Official distributors have gone crazy and are asking a completely ridiculous 25 thousand rubles for the old Sony, but “gray” sellers estimate the Xperia M5 Dual at 15-16 thousand - a completely fair price for such a model.

ZTE Nubia Z11 mini S

ZTE has a luxury division, Nubia, and it, in turn, has the flagship Z11 series, which has a simplified version of the Z11 mini, which recently underwent an update in the house that Jack built. We should pay tribute to the Chinese - the Z11 mini S differs from the Z11 mini radically and only for the better.

A very agile smartphone with a brutal body and red accents. You can’t really find fault with the characteristics: fast Snapdragon 625, 4 GB of RAM, 64 or 128 GB of internal storage. It’s also nice that ZTE (whose “hands are sharpened” more to adjust the audio path than camera algorithms) made a broad gesture and equipped the Z11 mini S with a 22-megapixel rear camera based on the Sony IMX318 sensor. The much more expensive ASUS ZenFone 3 Deluxe and Xiaomi Mi Note 2 are equipped with the same sensor, if you are not aware.

One of the key aspects of buying a new smartphone for many is the camera, because a bad photo will not get many likes. Especially for such geeks, we have selected the best smartphones with a good camera of 2016.

you will be interested!

Smartphones with good camera 2016

To make it easier for you to choose a camera phone, we have divided the list into 2 categories - an inexpensive smartphone with a good camera and a top-end smartphone with a good camera. In the first category, the emphasis on the hardware of the gadget will be insignificant. The second category will be distinguished by powerful hardware, excellent design and, as a rule, a good battery.

Inexpensive smartphone with a good camera

Moto G 3rd gen

The device from Motorola - Moto G of the third generation - has a camera with a resolution of 13 megapixels with a light-sensitive sensor. A 28 mm lens with f/2.0 aperture and four times zoom was also a solution in this device. In many respects the device is superior to most camera phones up to 10,000 rubles, see details of the camera's technical characteristics below.

Third generation Moto G camera specifications

  • 13 megapixels;
  • aperture f/2.0;
  • dual LED flash with CCT function;

  • manual focusing and exposure adjustment;
  • active viewfinder (recognizes QR codes and barcodes).

Samsung Galaxy S5

A smartphone that is no longer relevant may be interesting for those who “hunt” for good photographs. The device is able to shoot 4K video and Ultra HD. For lovers of underwater photography, the option of diving to 1 meter depth using a waterproof case will be useful. The 31mm lens with f/2.2 aperture and digital image stabilization make the smartphone truly competitive even with today's devices. Inexpensive smartphone under 15,000 rubles with a good camera. Let's not forget that 2 years ago it was the flagship!

Samsung Galaxy S5 camera specifications

Huawei P8

The previous generation of Huawei is still worth our attention due to its features. A 13-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 aperture takes pictures no worse than its analogues, but still the final quality without proper manual adjustments may be slightly shaky. The gadget can confidently be classified as smartphone with a good camera up to 15,000 rubles.

Huawei P8 Camera Specifications

  • main camera: 13 megapixels;
  • aperture f/2.0;
  • LED flash;
  • front camera 8 megapixels, f/2.0.

Chinese smartphone with a good camera

Xiaomi Mi5

Chinese camera phone with powerful hardware and excellent design. At a price with such characteristics, it has no equal. The smartphone has a Sony IMX298 camera module with f/2.0 aperture. The gadget takes good pictures, which do not reach the performance of top-end smartphones, but all this can be forgiven when you see the price. The new Xiaomi Mi5 can be bought for 16,000 rubles (the most minimal configuration).

Xiaomi Mi5 Camera Specifications

  • main camera: 16 megapixels;

Moto X Play

The device is clearly superior to the Xperia Z5 Compact in external aspects, but is still slightly inferior to its rival in the camera department. Thus, the main lens is represented by 21 megapixels with an f/2.0 aperture, and owners of the device will take selfies with a camera with a resolution of only 5 megapixels.

It should be noted right away that at first users will find the method of photography proposed by Motorola very unusual. In order to take a photo, you need to “tap” on the screen with the Camera application open. The smartphone belongs to the price category up to 20,000 rubles.

Moto X Play Camera Specifications

  • resolution: 21 megapixels;
  • aperture: f/2.0;
  • autofocus: PDAF;
  • flash: dual LED;

Moto X Style (Pure Edition)

The rating of smartphones with a good camera continues with the flagship from the iconic Motorola. Although this phone was released last year, it still remains relevant, both in terms of design and hardware characteristics. The Moto X Style camera has a 21 megapixel matrix with a wide range of capabilities.

Today, a smartphone with a good camera from Motorola can be purchased at a fairly low price. A flagship with a cool IPS display and powerful hardware will cost you almost 30,000 rubles.

Moto X Style (Pure Edition) Camera Specifications

  • main camera matrix 21 megapixel;
  • aperture: f/2.0;
  • phase detection autofocus;
  • 4x digital zoom;
  • continuous shooting;
  • 4K video;
  • slow motion mode;
  • 5 megapixel f/2.0 front camera with built-in flash for cool selfies.

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact

Perhaps the best camera on the market. The rear lens has an f/2.3 aperture and has a resolution of 23 megapixels and is capable of shooting 4K UHD video. The device's hybrid autofocus is very fast - only 0.03 seconds. The front camera, of course, is much worse - only 5 megapixels. The creators missed, perhaps, only one thing. Viewing such photos on a 4.6-inch screen is still inconvenient.

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact camera specifications

  • lens diameter 24 mm;
  • resolution: 23 megapixels;
  • autofocus: 0.03 s;
  • aperture: f/2.3;
  • digital stabilization: SteadyShot;

  • the ability to save individual frames as photos while shooting video.

Huawei P9

Powerful smartphone with a good camera 2016.One of the outstanding features of the smartphone is its authentic camera solution: 2 lenses with f/2.2 apertures, RGB color and monochrome. The number of integrated chips in the camera reaches unimaginable quantities, but they are not as obvious as in other devices. You will have to try hard to find them. The price for the brand is not too high, it’s worth taking.

Huawei P9 Specifications

  • main camera: two 12 megapixel lenses, f/2.2;
  • monochrome and RGB lenses;

Transport companies that deliver goods to shopping centers urgently remove gas equipment from their vehicles - unloading of goods almost always takes place in boxes, and entry there for gas-powered vehicles is now prohibited. The new edition of the Fire Safety Rules prohibits the parking of cars with gas equipment (gas equipment) “in closed parking lots built into buildings for other purposes and attached to them, as well as below ground level.”

According to “numerous requests from citizens”

The ban has been in effect in Kazakhstan for a month now - a government decree changing the parking rules for gas-powered cars was published on December 30, 2019. The Emergency Committee of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan justifies the limitation by “numerous appeals from citizens” who react painfully to the expansion of the country’s gas engine fleet.

The mechanism of the ban is simple: a rule has been added to the traffic rules obliging owners of cars with LPG to install a special identification sign. Such cars are prohibited from entering parking lots.

According to NPP Atameken, in Almaty alone there are 120 covered parking lots belonging to shopping, entertainment and business centers. There is no exact information on parking lots in residential complexes, but there are clearly more than a hundred of them.

The Department of Disaster Risk Reduction and Control in the Field of Civil Protection of Almaty announced statistics to Kursivu that substantiate the timeliness of the measures taken. According to the city akimat, in 2019, 118 transport fires were recorded in Almaty, 7% of such cases occurred in gas-powered vehicles. If this happened to a gas-powered car in an underground parking lot, says the chief specialist of the emergency department Aidar Sarymbaev, it will be difficult to organize the evacuation of people and extinguishing the fire.

The emergency specialist also listed the reasons that prompted the introduction of restrictions. It turns out that there is no body in the country that controls this part of the automobile market, there is no special technical supervision system and there is no control over companies that install gas equipment on cars.

Statistical accounting of vehicles using gas equipment is carried out without dividing into types of gas - compressed natural gas (methane) and liquefied hydrocarbon (propane-butane), although their characteristics are different.

Brake for the client

Large companies involved in installing gas equipment on cars are recording a sharp drop in interest in gas engine technologies. According to Nadezhda Semidiyankina, director of Eco Expert KZ, in January the company’s employees installed gas equipment on seven cars, while in December – on 22. At the same time, a reduction in orders occurs against the backdrop of rising gasoline prices. Kursiv’s interlocutor says that usually during such periods there is a peak in demand, when three or four installations of gas equipment are carried out daily. Nowadays, a typical order is for the removal of already installed equipment; this decision is made by companies servicing business transportation for large shopping centers.

General Director of Green Auto Service Erlan Nurpeisov emphasizes that Kazakhstan has ratified European standards and laws on the safety of wheeled vehicles, and experts around the world consider LPG to be the safest. Such equipment is equipped with a number of degrees of protection that make it impossible to explode even in an open fire. “With one stroke of the pen, the market is denied access to environmentally friendly modern technologies that are convenient for business,” Nurpeisov marvels.

The adopted ban may even lead to political consequences - this is the opinion expressed by the chairman of the board of the ALE “Gas Engine Association of Kazakhstan” Erbol Tokhtarov. According to him, the restrictions on gas-powered vehicles caused confusion in appeals from European countries, as well as Russia and China. The transition of transport to environmentally friendly fuel is an important global trend, which is dictated not only by economic interests, but also by concerns about climate change and the preservation of human health. Tokhtarov believes that a decision made without consultation with the expert community threatens the country with loss of reputation.

HBO market: without “gray” and “white”

Major market players are unhappy that officials chose a crude ban over finding an adequate solution. This, in their opinion, would be a ban on small “gray” gas equipment installers who, due to low competence, work in violation of regulations and thereby discredit the technology and undermine confidence in it.

Not all market participants support this opinion; among the antagonists is the official representative of four European LPG manufacturers in Almaty, Vasily Bochkarev. It is through his warehouse that all equipment enters the city. The market supply system is as follows: manufacturers deliver equipment to a certified dealer warehouse in Uralsk, from where it is distributed throughout the country.

According to Bochkarev, 150 companies provide services for installing gas equipment on cars in the southern capital. The interlocutor denies the division of the market into “gray” and “white” installers, and explains all talk about this by competition.

Bochkarev also does not agree that the gas equipment installation market is experiencing a crisis: warehouse sales are stable. The expert considers the main problem to be the falling consumer demand of the population. Because of this, customers save on the quality of components. Consequently, companies that are not constrained by the strict technological regulations of one manufacturer with whom an agreement is concluded are chosen to install gas equipment.

Who drives on gas

According to experts, installing LPG is beneficial if the vehicle's daily mileage is at least 100 kilometers. The cost of equipment and its installation depends on the manufacturer and type of car engine. For installation on a car equipped with a four-cylinder engine, you need to pay 150–200 thousand tenge, if there are six cylinders – 200–280 thousand tenge, if eight – 280–320 thousand tenge.

The most popular equipment is made in Italy and Poland; it can run 400–500 thousand kilometers without failure. When installing LPG, vehicle maintenance costs increase – by about 10–15%, according to Erbol Tokhtarov. The consumer benefits from fuel savings and extended engine life.

The use of gas equipment on cars in Kazakhstan is quite widespread, despite the lack of active propaganda and incentive measures, as well as the philistine fear of gas technologies. According to statistical data, in 2019 there were 325 thousand cars in the country that were converted to gas. If, based on data from the Association of Kazakhstan Automotive Business, we take the entire fleet of the republic as 4.5 million cars, then just over 7% (including hybrid ones), mainly using propane-butane, use gas.

The majority of such vehicles are in the western regions of the country – up to 80% of the vehicle fleet. In Almaty, estimates vary, the maximum voiced being 20%. It is worth considering that the state accounting system is set up very roughly - it is permissive. Such a system is complicated by red tape, so car owners avoid the hassle by leaving the registration of equipment installation “for later.”

Two types of fuel, two development paths

Erbol Tokhtarov says that back in Soviet times there were several large-scale attempts to introduce gas equipment. Then it was equipment running on compressed natural gas - methane. The technology is based on the ability of methane to be compressed; for example, for gas treatment it is compressed 200 times. Equipment running on compressed gas is bulky and heavy and is more suitable for use on work equipment and public transport.

The supply system for this fuel was and remains part of the country's state gas pipeline system. On its basis, attempts are now being made in the Republic of Kazakhstan to convert municipal equipment and public transport to methane. The process is proceeding with varying degrees of success: it was planned that the number of buses and special municipal and road equipment running on gas in 2020 will be 6,100 units, and in 2022 – 12 thousand, but the entire total gas vehicle fleet of the country is now approximately 1,300 buses.

At the same time, the propane-butane market is developing - it is a by-product of oil production.
In 2006, Kazakhstan committed itself to recycling this raw material, launched its processing and created an open market for this fuel. The peculiarity of propane-butane is that it transforms into liquid form at medium temperatures, which is why it is called liquefied. Fuel is pumped into car tanks under a pressure of 16 atmospheres. Such equipment is less bulky and is popular among owners of individual cars.

Kazakhstan approaches the development of the autogas market selectively. The use of methane is being stimulated. For example, subsidies are now being developed for vehicle fleets servicing public transport routes with compressed gas buses. Measures to encourage the transition to LPG for individual car owners are still being talked about.

The conversion of gasoline and diesel cars to gas fuel is a noticeable global trend. And although electric cars are at the forefront of the information agenda, car market experts, according to Erbol Tokhtarov, see great prospects in the use of gas. In neighboring Russia and China, the use of gas fuel systems is encouraged by serious government support measures. We are talking not only about public, freight or individual transport - diesel locomotives, heavy mining equipment, and sea vessels are being converted to gas.

What have famous mobile manufacturers prepared for the public? Fans of mobile technology and the most ordinary people were eagerly awaiting the release of that device that could be called “The best camera phone of 2016.”

Great expectations were placed on these smartphones, given the fact that every year the number of megapixels increases, new stabilization systems appear, and built-in digital cameras become increasingly better.

Camera phone rating

One of the most exciting new products is the Galaxy S7 from Samsung.

The manufacturer made sure that this Android device had 4 gigabytes of RAM, a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display, waterproof technology, 5G support, body temperature sensors and a powerful 64-bit processor with a clock frequency of 3.5 gigahertz.

In addition, modifications are provided for 32, 64 and 128 gigabytes of permanent memory. However, the most surprising feature is the 30-megapixel camera on the back of the smartphone.

In addition to the main camera, there is also a front camera of 10 megapixels. We add that the mobile device is equipped with a new feature called GigaPixel, which is designed to help take images with high precision.

The One M10 from HTC is quite a serious competitor to the Galaxy S7. This mobile device has a 5.2-inch display covered with sapphire glass, a 3.1 gigahertz processor and a wireless charging system.

In terms of shooting capabilities, the smartphone has a 10-megapixel front camera and a 27-megapixel main camera. These cameras stand out from others due to their high performance.

An example of such a smartphone is Oppo's Find 9. This company has already created several outstanding smart phones. The new flagship was released in 2016 and was equipped with a 5.5-inch HD Quad display, 4 gigabytes of RAM, 8 megapixel front and 20 megapixel main cameras.

Other best camera phones

The new G5 smartphone from LG is a stylish flagship with a 5.6-inch screen and sapphire glass, a fast 2.9-inch processor, 5 gigabytes of RAM, and a 4100 mAh battery.

In addition, the manufacturer has equipped its device with a 5-megapixel front camera, a 23-megapixel main camera, a 3D function and an optical stabilization system.

Well, our list of camera phones is completed by the iPhone 7, a new outstanding “smart” device from Apple. It has a new quad-core A9 processor, which makes it faster than all other iOS devices.

The smartphone also has a front-facing 2-megapixel Facetime HD camera and a main 20-megapixel iSight camera, allowing its owner to take stunning pictures.
