The next part is a text review of the DJI Osmo Mobile.

Package
The packaging of the DJI Osmo Mobile looks very dignified.

Right in this video, it’s not a shame to give a friend a gift.

In general, the packaging is quite well done, so if you ordered your Osmo Mobile from afar, then you should not worry about its safe transportation.

Equipment
As standard with the DJI Osmo Mobile, you get everything you need.

DJI will delight you with a waterproof carrying case for your Osmo Mobile. Inside the case there are two pockets for a USB cable, charger and other "little things".

We also get a special plug for the standard Osmo Mobile mounting location.

And for convenient, and most importantly, safe carrying, we get a comfortable cord on your hand.

It may seem to you that the kit is too modest, but in fact, with Osmo Mobile you get only the things you need.

Appearance and elements
Let's start with the dimensions: the total length of Osmo Plus Mobile is only 25 cm.

Such a stabilizer has an ideal combination of weight / size. It is quite easy to take with you and carry in your hands for several hours.

Below is the battery compartment.

And the battery of the DJI Osmo Mobile is replaceable.

A full charge will last you 2-3 hours.

The working part of the handle is rubberized - it is a pleasure to hold on to it. And the plastic around is matte - no scratches or scuffs will occur.

  • Start and stop video shooting
  • Button to control the process of taking a photo
  • Stick that allows you to quickly change the position of the camera

The DJI Osmo Mobile on/off lever is located on the side.

And on the reverse side there is a trigger that performs the functions:
  • Fixing the camera in one position
  • Returning the camera to its original position (double tap)
  • Switching the camera to selfie shooting mode - turning the camera "on itself" (triple tap)
Just below is the audio output, which is used to recharge the battery.

In addition, we also have two LED indicators: the left one is responsible for the shooting status, the right one for on/off and battery status.

On the stabilization system itself, there is a rod adjustable in reach, which allows you to install your smartphone perfectly in the center (without overweight to one side or the other, depending on the length of the smartphone).

The mounting frame for the DJI Osmo Mobile smartphone inspires confidence and fixes your smartphone as securely as possible.

The fact is that the capture itself does not occur with the help of springs (as in selfie sticks), but with the help of an adjusting washer.

Thus, you can very easily adjust the working diameter of the gripper.

In addition, thanks to this simple adapter, you can easily attach your GoPro Hero 3 or Hero 5 Black action camera to the DJI Osmo Mobile.

With this adapter, Osmo Mobile becomes a full-fledged steadicam for action cameras.

DJI itself produces various mounts for Osmo, you can see them.

Anyone can use Osmo Mobile 100% in their field.

DJI Go App
With this free app for your smartphone, you can:

  • Fully control the camera of your smartphone (you get even more settings than in the regular camera window)
  • Manage all shooting modes, as well as switch between them
  • Update your Osmo Plus Mobile software without connecting to a computer
  • Copy and view all footage exactly on Osmo Plus Mobile
  • Change absolutely all settings for shooting video / photos, as well as the speed of the Osmo Mobile stabilizer

It is very convenient to use the application on any diagonal of the display.

Overall, the application itself is extremely easy to learn and thanks to it you will not need to connect your DJI Osmo Plus Mobile to a computer for setup.

In addition, thanks to the application, you get such "chips" as:

That's all the basics related to DJI Osmo Mobile, and the full version of the DJI Osmo Mobile test in our video:

General conclusions
DJI Osmo Mobile is simply a reliable and very "understandable" stabilizer for users with absolutely any level of training and needs.

Its significant advantage is the proprietary "DJI Go" application, which allows you to turn your smartphone into a professional camera. So, if you wanted a modern steadicam for your phone, in a combination of price / quality / features, DJI Osmo Mobile will simply be one of the best!

And you can always buy DJI Osmo Plus (click).

The cameras of many modern flagships could be almost flawless, if not for one drawback - they all often lack image stabilization. It is for such cases that DJI OSMO Mobile 2 was created, a review of which is in this article. Today we will figure out how this steadicam differs from its predecessor and whether it is worth buying it for the owners of the first generation of the accessory.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2

Specifications

  • Controlled viewing angles: pan: ±170°, roll: -90° to +70°, tilt: ±170°;
  • Turning speed: 120°/s;
  • Angular vibration range: ±0.03°;
  • Battery: lithium-ion, 2600 mAh, charging time - 2 hours;
  • Dimensions: 295 x 113 x 72 mm;
  • Weight: 485 g (excluding smartphone).

Design and ergonomics

The first generation of OSMO Mobile had one significant drawback, which gave many users a lot of headaches. The device had no problems with compactness (you can easily put it in a backpack) or with stabilization. However, when it came to mounting on a tripod, I had to fiddle with a bunch of adapters. The OSMO Mobile 2 solved the problem with a universal 1/4-inch jack on the underside of the handle. Now the accessory can be attached to almost anything.

OSMO Mobile 2 is made of high-strength modified nylon, which is much stronger than the usual plastic from which the first model of the device is made. The second steadicam also received a completely redesigned design (with the transfer of the main functional elements) and a more comfortable handle.

The inconvenient smartphone mount was replaced with a new holder that easily changes the distance between the terminals with one hand movement. Now the user does not need to fiddle with a screwdriver to insert a large phablet. The mount fixes the phone (or camera) very securely, so you don’t have to worry about their safety during active shooting.

Another important innovation is the multifunctional trigger, or rather, its absence. This key was removed, and its functions were transferred to the mode change button, which was located exactly under the thumb. There is also a small joystick for manually changing the orientation of the steadicam, a power button and several LED lights.

OSMO Mobile is still a non-separable model, you cannot detach the gimbal from the handle. Replaceable accessory batteries have been eliminated, now its battery is charged via a regular microUSB connector. From it you can also power your smartphone during shooting.

Control

Before you start using the steadicam, you need to install the proprietary DJI Go app, it synchronizes your smartphone with the device and allows you to conveniently control its functions directly from your phone. Once connected, OSMO Mobile 2 immediately levels the phone to a horizontal position and waits for the user's instructions.

For fans of Instagram stories, they have reserved the ability to switch the steadicam to vertical shooting mode. Although few people approve of vertical shooting, for Instagram or Snapchat bloggers, this feature will be very useful. True, there is no quick transition between the two modes. You will have to first remove the smartphone from the mount, and then manually “reorient” the accessory by pressing a small button on the case.

It is noteworthy that the novelty also used artificial intelligence to facilitate cinematic shooting. The ActiveTrack feature can automatically capture moving subjects and keep them exactly in the middle of the frame. In the DJI Go app, you can change various parameters of the Steadicam's preset movements. For example, choosing Walk or Sport mode. The first is adapted for normal walking, and the second stabilizes the camera during sudden movements like running.

By double-clicking on the Mode button, the gimbal fixes the smartphone in a horizontal position, and by triple-clicking it switches shooting to the front camera. Initially, learning how to hold the camera correctly to shoot smooth shots is quite difficult, but understanding the basic functionality of DJI OSMO Mobile 2 comes after a couple of hours of active work with the steadicam. Of course, to develop the full potential of the device, you need to train even longer.

Battery

The built-in battery is one of the key differences from the previous generation and replaces the replaceable batteries previously used in OSMO Mobile. Thanks to the increase in battery capacity, it was possible to achieve very high autonomy rates - as much as 15 hours without recharging against 4 hours for the first model.

Video shooting quickly discharges the smartphone battery, so the manufacturer has provided the possibility of recharging it directly from the steadicam. A capacity of 2600 mAh is enough for an emergency recharge of your phone.

Price

Another reason to buy OSMO Mobile 2 is its price. The accessory will cost you almost half the price of its predecessor (at the start of sales). Steadicams will be available soon for $129.

Conclusion

  • Low cost;
  • Redesigned hull;
  • Improved autonomy;
  • Ability to recharge your smartphone.
  • There is no quick transition to portrait orientation.

DJI OSMO Mobile 2 is one of those rare cases where a manufacturer lowers the price of a new product despite improvements. The gadget will definitely fall into the shopping list of most bloggers and just photography enthusiasts. However, if you already have the first generation of OSMO Mobile, upgrading to the new one will not bring you much experience, except for better battery life.

Our test of this steadicam did not find critical flaws in it. Unless some users may not like the too time-consuming procedure for switching the device to portrait mode.

Smartphone cameras are getting better every day. Flagship models can compete with modern action cameras in quality. To unleash the full potential of mobile devices, the Chinese company DJI has redesigned its OSMO three-axis gimbal, removing the Zenmuse cameras.

The device should provide first-class video stabilization at an affordable price. The DJI OSMO Mobile review will take stock of the manufacturer's attempts to change the format of its product for a wider audience.

Peculiarities

The gimbal is controlled using the DJI Go App. Its functionality includes automatic face recognition. Also, the steadicam can turn the smartphone towards the operator with the touch of a button after activating the selfie mode.

Go App has an intuitive interface, a beginner will not have to understand the program's functions for a long time. A user can start live streaming a YouTube video with just a couple of swipes. To activate the TimeLapse mode, you need to tap on the smartphone screen several times.

Other features:

  • Hardware three-axis video stabilization;
  • Panoramic shooting of 9 photos;
  • Universal connector for more than fifty different accessories;
  • Automatic tracking of the specified object;
  • Long exposure photography;
  • Support for large smartphones.

Specifications

  • Controlled viewing angles: pan: ±150°, roll: ±25°, tilt: -125°…+35°;
  • Turning speed: 120°/s;
  • Angular vibration range: ±0.03°;
  • Battery: Li-ion, 980 mAh, charging time - 3 hours;
  • Dimensions: 290 x 110 x 120 mm;
  • Weight: 488 g (excluding smartphone).

Equipment

The gadget comes in a white box with a large image of the front side of the Steadicam. The contents of the package are protected by a rigid cardboard frame.

  • DJI OSMO Mobile;
  • Adapter cable from USB to 3.5 mm minijack;
  • Strap for fixing on the hand;
  • Branded case for transporting components;
  • 980 mAh battery;
  • Instruction in 11 languages.

Design and ergonomics

The premium build quality is exactly what you would expect from a brand like DJI. Indeed, everything here is top notch. The appearance of the steadicam has not changed much since OSMO, except that the ZENMUSE camera replaces the smartphone mount. Almost every part of the device is made of black plastic, and the handle is wrapped in a pleasant to the touch corrugated material.

The three-axis suspension is made of aluminum with a plastic coating. The smartphone mount easily changes the distance between the rubberized edges and perfectly holds a device with a screen diagonal of up to 6 inches. When installing the phone, you need to be careful, as the mount fixes the monoblock very rigidly. Excessive pressure may damage the plastic case.

To maximize production savings, DJI decided not to completely recycle the finished OSMO handle. Now the 3.5 mm jack on the front side of the device can be used for charging thanks to the adapter to the USB standard. There is no built-in microphone here, but a small perforation for it remains.

The device itself will not idle without a smartphone. The presence of a gadget in the fastener is recognized by a special sensor. The range of possible phone width is from 58.6 to 84.8 mm.

The arrangement of functional elements is the same as that of OSMO. On the front is an analog stick for changing the angle of the mount, a button for changing the recording mode and a Play / Stop key. The LED on the right shows the battery status, the left one indicates the current connection status with the smartphone. The power switch is located on the right side.

The multifunctional trigger and minijack are located in the front of the device.

Unlike older models, OSMO Mobile is non-separable. The gimbal cannot be detached from the handle, so using a third-party camera will not work. However, this state of affairs can even be attributed to the advantages of the device, because smartphone cameras are constantly being improved. Steadicams can be used with more modern models that will appear in the future.

Control

The full feature set of OSMO Mobile is revealed after syncing with the DJI Go App. Before work, the smartphone must be fixed on the suspension in the off state. Then, the device is synchronized with the steadicam via Bluetooth (unlike OSMO's Wi-Fi). The equipment is ready to shoot.

The camera can be operated with one hand simply by using the stick and two thumb buttons. For the most smooth panning, it is recommended not to deviate the joystick much, since the speed of rotation of the mechanism depends on the angle of its inclination.

The trigger in the front part works on the principle of older suspension models. A single hold locks the camera, two clicks bring it back to normal, and three consecutive clicks activate the selfie mode.

You can shoot in four orientations:

  1. The usual landscape shooting mode with a full range of necessary functions;
  2. Shooting in flashlight mode. You can only rotate your smartphone vertically;
  3. portrait mode. The camera can rotate in all axes, but Active Track is not available here;
  4. Shooting from a low angle. All functionality is available, the image on the phone screen is inverted.

You can also shoot videos without the app. In this case, only the image stabilization function is used, the controls on the handle do not function. In theory, even a GoPro can be installed on the mount, then it will lose the lion's share of functions on the steadicam itself. For example, a few presses on the main button of the front panel take normal shots, and a long hold can take a series of shots.

Also, many bloggers will need another great tool - Active Track. It is enough to select the desired object on the smartphone screen with a square, and it will always remain in the middle of the frame. After attaching the gimbal to a tripod, you can start creating Time Lapse video. To do this, you need to set the start and finish points for shooting with a couple of settings, then the steadicam will do everything automatically. The application glues wide panoramic photos from 9 different frames. In the settings, you can select the panorama angle - 180 or 330 degrees.

Although the DJI Go App is a gimbal plus, the program can also be a serious problem for owners of some smartphones. The application still has many bugs and works differently with different devices. Some interface icons may not respond to pressing at all, and Bluetooth synchronization does not always work correctly.

Battery

OSMO Mobile comes with a 980 mAh lithium polymer battery. The resource of the power source is enough for continuous almost five hours of shooting. The user can purchase an additional larger 1225 mAh battery for $45.

Such an offer is very beneficial, but it is unlikely to be needed in the process of work. Most likely, the smartphone will be discharged faster than the gimbal. Therefore, before filming, it is recommended to take a power bank for a mobile gadget with you.

field test

The OSMO Mobile stabilizer works great with normal settings. To prevent distortion or shaking in the video, you need to turn off the optical stabilization of the smartphone camera. It can work out of sync with the suspension.

Another note is the weight of the smartphone. Steadicam behaves differently with a 5-inch phone and a 6-inch phablet. A heavier device requires more practice in proper panning. Excess weight makes the motors of the mechanism take longer to turn to the desired angle.

While using the device, it is not recommended to hold OSMO Mobile by the gimbal or put it somewhere in working condition, as the stabilization system starts to behave inappropriately. When installing on a small stand, you need to make sure that the structure does not turn over.

An example of shooting 4K video iPhone 7 Plus + DJI Osmo Mobile:

Judging by customer reviews, there is one noticeable drawback in the design of the steadicam. Due to the fact that the smartphone is both a camera and a viewfinder, when you deviate to a large angle, what is happening on the screen is not always clearly visible.

Price

The approximate cost of DJI OSMO Mobile is $320. So far, this is one of the most affordable professional steadicams for smartphones.

Conclusion

  • Excellent design;
  • Phablet support;
  • Long battery life;
  • Active Track, Time Lapse;
  • Branded case included.
  • Bugs in the application;
  • Inconvenience of shooting at a large angle of deflection of fasteners.

DJI OSMO Mobile will be an excellent find for owners of flagship smartphones. The device can fully reveal the full potential of a mobile device as a professional camera, and a large number of shooting accessories will allow you to find your own format for working with video.

The technical capabilities of the Mobile version are practically the same as the traditional OSMO model. The second is recommended to buy if you do not have a smartphone with a good camera. Another analogue is Z1 Evolution from the Chinese brand Zhiyun. The functionality is more modest, but the price of $150 does not spend the budget so much.

DJI OSMO Mobile Video Review

And now, we present Osmo steadicam for smartphones. For amateur filming, you no longer need a camera - modern smartphones record videos perfectly! For example, the flagships of Samsung and Apple allow you to shoot in excellent 4K quality.

Why stabilize video from your smartphone?

Not only videographers will pay attention to Osmo Mobile, but also people who use their smartphone for creative filming. Thanks to hardware 3-axis stabilization, video from a smartphone will be comparable in smoothness to a professional one shot on a cool video camera! Osmo Mobile is a great gadget for those who want to fill their video blog or Instagram videos in professional quality using only a smartphone and steadicam.

Some smartphone models have software stabilization. But in terms of quality, it can not be compared with the hardware. Software stabilization algorithms are still far from ideal, the most common problem is the “jelly picture”, it occurs due to the software stabilization algorithm.

Video taken without stabilization

Design and control

Structurally, the Osmo steadicam has not changed much, only instead of the X3 camera, a smartphone mount is now installed. In addition, a Bluetooth connection instead of a Wi-Fi connection has increased the operating time from 90 minutes to 4.5 hours. By the way, the mount has been redesigned and now it is comfortable - the smartphone no longer slips out of it, as it happens in OSMO with the X3 camera.

The handle lies perfectly in the hand - all controls are located very conveniently and are in logical places. There are 3 buttons on the front of the handle - video recording, shutter release button and joystick, with which you can smoothly rotate the camera. You can return it to its original position by double-clicking on the trigger - this is a button on the back of the handle panel from the operator, under the index finger.

Shooting with a smartphone

Think the iPhone shoots better video? Or, conversely, Android? No difference! On Osmo steadicam you can install a smartphone on any of these platforms, both regular size and large models, for example, the iPhone 7 Plus. The smartphone is fixed on a mount that allows you to change the viewing angle.

To get started, download the DJI GO app from the AppStore or Play Market. After downloading the application, you need to connect with Osmo via bluetooth. The connection is fast and stable. Everything, now the gadget is ready to work, you can shoot! Videos and photos can be edited directly in the DJI GO app and published both on the DJI branded social network, and saved to the photo gallery and posted on Instagram, Facebook, VKontakte or other social networks.

Battery and Charging

The battery of the Osmo is removable and can be charged using the AC adapter or via USB. Charging via USB is now carried out through a mini-jack, in the first version of Osmo there was a microphone input.

Battery power lasts up to 4.5 hours of video shooting, depending on weather conditions. For example, in the cold, the steadicam will work less, and the smartphone can be discharged faster.

For serious filming - not enough, you need to buy extra batteries. DJI engineers have thought of this and optionally offer to purchase a charger for 4 batteries at once!

In addition to powering the steadicam, do not forget about your smartphone! In video shooting mode, even the most advanced flagship will last a little over an hour. And if the weather is cold outside - even less! If you have an important shooting - stock up on an external battery for your smartphone.
