In 2006, while still a cub, Winter lost her own tail to a crabs poaching trap. A completely emaciated three-month-old baby dolphin was found by Florida rescuers and taken to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, known for its excellent veterinary base.

For over four months, a team of 150 doctors and volunteer rescue workers treated Winter. She was fed with milk mixture and grated fish.

The dolphin had to amputate the crippled tail, otherwise the animal would not have survived. But to move, like all relatives - up and down - Winter could no longer, but only swayed helplessly from side to side. Therefore, the veterinarians decided to make an artificial tail for Winter.

The story of the rescued Winter was shown on NBC, CNN, BBC, after which it became a symbol of charity. Kevin Carol, vice-president of the Hanger Prosthetics Department, suggested making a prosthesis for a dolphin - after all, the company's specialists had already successfully made prostheses for dogs and even birds. But developing an artificial tail in this case turned out to be much more difficult than expected - it took almost a year and a half to work. The dolphin's fin should bend freely in all directions, become, as it were, an extension of the spine.

That is, a soft and flexible, but at the same time dense material was required. Dentures for animals are often made of plastic, but for the dolphin something had to be chosen that could withstand constant contact with salt water. Chemical engineers have come up with "silicone elastomer" - a soft, tough and tacky gel that won't injure the stump of the tail. A plastic tail was "planted" on this base, which is replaced as Winter grows. The temperature of the dolphin is constantly measured, making sure that the place under the prosthesis does not become inflamed.

Experts suggest Winter will need three more tails as he grows. The cost of the tail is equal to the monthly budget of the Clearwater Aquarium, and in addition to Winter, other injured dolphins, turtles and even sea otters live here. Therefore, there is a charity program in the aquarium, and everyone can send $ 75 for the maintenance of Winter, and $ 40 for the rest of the animals. Judging by the unrelenting interest in Winter in the American press, the program is doing just fine.

The work on creating an artificial tail is unique, there has never been such an experience in the world. Lasting Lesson to Protect Marine Life

Winter is missing her entire tail fluke and joint. Tail flukes are the powerhouse of the dolphin and are attached to the peduncle, the muscular part of the dolphin. To swim naturally, a dolphin moves the peduncle up and down and the tail flukes propel the dolphin forward.
