Chess, minesweeper and solitaire for Windows 10: returning games to the new OS

12.09.2021

If you switched to the new Windows 10 not from the previous system, but from Windows 7 or even Vista, then you may probably be disappointed by the absence of a number of familiar functions and applications in the OS. One of these unpleasant moments was games from the standard Windows package.

By default, Windows 10 for some reason does not have chess, minesweeper, kerchief and many other favorite simple but pleasant toys. Why Microsoft removed them from the system is a mystery to us, too. However, don’t worry: today we will tell you how to return games from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

The first thing you need is to download an unofficial archive with games from Windows 7 to your computer. To do this, use the download link at the very bottom of this article.

The link leads to Yandex.Disk, where you should click on the “download” button, which is located in the panel on the right, immediately below the yellow “save to Yandex.Disk” button. Let's make a reservation right away: the games are distributed free of charge; There are no malware or other unpleasant surprises in the archive with them. Once the archive is downloaded, locate it and extract the contents using the "extract all" command in the context menu:

Confirm your action:

The installer start window will open in front of you:

In the next window, select which specific Windows 7 games you want to add to Windows 10.

If all toys are selected without exception, then all of them will take up a little more than 150 MB on the disk.

It would be wiser to leave it on.

If for some reason you have very little space on drive C, then in the next window you can select a different drive and a different folder for the games to be installed. If everything is fine with the location, then immediately click “install” without changing the installation folder:

When “ready” appears above the progress bar, click next:

This completes the installation procedure.

To find newly installed games, open the Start menu and click on the “all applications” button. When you reach the letter “i” in the alphabet, you will see a new “games” folder. It contains all the games from Windows 7, which you can now play on Windows 10 (by the way, see our review of the most fascinating ones).

For convenience, you can drag and drop a shortcut for any game directly to your desktop or pin it to the right side of the Windows 10 Start menu to get quick access to it.

If you need such access to all games at once, then add the “Game Browser” shortcut to the right side of the menu or to the desktop. Behind it lies a familiar interface, where shortcuts for all installed toys are collected together:

Actually, that's all. We tested almost all the games from this package. For example, chess and kerchief for Windows 10 work great and support saving:

Minesweeper, Spider Solitaire, Mahjong and other entertainment applications run no less successfully on Windows 10:
