Slideshow not working on Windows 10 lock screen

27.09.2021

The slide show function on the Windows 10 lock screen, like many other things in the new operating system, was inherited from the previous version of the OS. Thanks to slides, you can decorate your lockscreen with not just one, but a bunch of images at once, which will replace each other automatically after a certain period of time.

The process of setting up a slideshow is easy : All you need to do is go to Settings -> Personalization -> Lock Screen, turn on the Slideshow option in the Background drop-down menu, and then add a folder containing several images.

However, sometimes turning on the slideshow does nothing, i.e. The lock screen continues to display one current image. If this is your case, then the methods below will help you fix this annoying problem.

Method 1: Delete and re-add the images folder

First of all, try the simple solution:

1. Open the Settings menu from the Start menu, or by pressing +I.

2. Go to Personalization -> Lock Screen and select the current folder containing the slideshow images. Click "Remove" to remove it from the list.

3. Do the same for all folders in the album list.

4. Now add the desired folder again by clicking on the “Add Folder” button.

5. Check if the slideshow is now working by locking your computer by pressing +L.

Method 2: Change Advanced Slideshow Options

If the first method does not bring the desired result, try the following:

1. While in Settings -> Personalization -> Lock Screen, click on the link "More Slideshow Options".

2. Now disable the option "Select photos to fit your screen size" and enable the option "When the computer is inactive, show the lock screen instead of turning off the screen". If you have a laptop or tablet, then also enable slide show when using the battery.

Method 3: Disable the requirement to press Ctrl+Alt+Del before user login

If you have the "Require Ctrl+Alt+Delete" option enabled on your computer, the lock screen slideshow will not work. Thus, to admire the slides you must disable this option:

1. Open the Run dialog, enter the command control userpasswords2 and press Enter to open the User Accounts window.

2. Go to the “Advanced” tab and uncheck the “Require Ctrl+Alt+Delete” option.

3. Apply the changes.

Method 4: Enable Search Service

It may seem strange, but the lock screen slideshow feature depends on Windows Search because the pictures folder needs to be indexed by Windows Search. Accordingly, if this service does not work, the slideshow will not work. Some users do not use the built-in search, and therefore simply disable the search service in order to improve computer performance.

So, follow these steps to enable the search service:

1. Open the service manager by running the command services.msc in the Run window.

2. Find Windows Search in the list of services. Double-click the properties of this service and make sure that the Startup Type drop-down list is set to Automatic.

3. Apply the changes and click the Start button to start the search service immediately.

4. Also, just in case, open Control Panel and go to Indexing Options.

5. In the Indexing Options window, click Edit and separately add your slideshow image folder.

That's all. Now the slideshow will work without any problems.

Have a great day!
