Positioning

Most manufacturers have completely abandoned the segment of compact smartphones, for some reason it is believed that a small phone should be outdated, not the most modern. There are three companies on the market that produce such devices - these are Apple (iPhone SE model), Sony (Compact series), and Samsung. In A3 2017, the desire of some buyers to get a small, compact phone is just realized. A relatively small screen diagonal of 4.7 inches determines the scenarios for using such a device - first of all, it is needed for calls, and secondly - for social networks, instant messengers and web browsing. This smartphone can be safely considered as a second phone, in this capacity it is almost perfect - it works for a long time, has a balanced, modern set of functions. But it is also good as a main device for those who are not looking for a large screen diagonal and are used to compact models.

On the side of this model, a set of functions comparable to older devices, although in the A3 of 2017 a number of features were removed compared to the A5 / A7 - the phone has a simpler front and main camera, lower screen resolution (HD, not FullHD), there is no fast battery charging, which, however, is not critical, the charging time remains comparable, since the battery capacity is also lower. All the pluses in the form of Samsung Pay (NFC / MST), IP68 water protection remained. As well as the use of exactly the same materials, which distinguishes the model from many classmates, it is perfectly executed. And, perhaps, this is one of the few compact smartphones on the modern market - the difference between this model and 5-inch devices is very noticeable, the impressions from them are very different. Moreover, these differences are both positive and negative, and depend directly on what you are used to.

Design, dimensions, controls

In the A-series, the design is to some extent inherited from older models, the same body materials, no noticeable simplifications and savings. Model A3 looks expensive and stylish, regardless of what color you choose. There are four color schemes in total, there are no pink phones in Russia yet.

I have a black A3, it is classic and looks good. The mirror surface reflects the surrounding world, plays in the light, the device looks very interesting, and handprints are almost invisible. I will add here that the screen with a splash screen (AlwaysOn Display function) can always work, which none of the competitors has. In the end, we get an unusual device that has no analogues on the market, it can be distinguished from any other at a glance.

If we talk about what color is the best, then I like blue, it is a delicate shade, very unusual, perfect for girls, however, see for yourself.

Please note that the front and back panels are the same color, as is the side metal piping (6000 series aluminium). In pink, the device also looks good, but it is definitely only for girls.

The golden phone is somewhat rustic, but everyone has their own tastes.

The fact that the device has a glass back and front does not interfere with it at all, since Corning Gorilla Glass 4 is quite reliable and protected from accidental drops, although here someone is as lucky. In terms of mechanical protection, this device is completely identical to the Galaxy S6 EDGE, the quality is at the level. I once recorded a video about how this phone survives a collision with sharp objects or asphalt, you can watch this video.

The innovation of the A-series in 2017 was the water protection, which was taken from the S7 / S7 EDGE, the implementation is exactly the same. The SIM card tray is protected by rubber gaskets, the microphones and speaker are covered with membranes, the protection level is IP68, which allows the phone to be at a depth of up to 1.5 meters for up to half an hour. This does not mean that the phone needs to be washed under water and even more so with soap or something similar. But if you drop it into water, nothing will happen to it. There are no models with water protection in this price segment.

Now about controls. Under the screen there is a mechanical key, it contains a fingerprint sensor, it is simplified compared to the S7/S7 EDGE, it works a little slower, but there are no problems because of this. Nice solution that just works. On the sides of it are two touch keys.

On the left side there are two volume keys, on the right side there is an on/off button. There is a noise reduction system on the lower and upper ends - on the microphone, it does its job perfectly, you can be heard well in any conditions, even when the wind is blowing hard in your face.

At the bottom there is also a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones, as well as a USB Type C connector for a charger. At the top end there is a tray, a nanoSIM card and a memory card or two SIM cards are installed in it. This is a combo tray, so it's worth remembering, A5 / A7 can install both a memory card and two SIM cards at the same time.

The speaker is located on the right side surface, due to this it can overlap in the pocket, it will not be heard very well. The speaker itself is average in volume, but very pleasant.

Phone dimensions - 135.4 x 66.2 x 7.9 mm, weight - 138 grams. Compact, very small. It can sink in a man's hand, but someone likes this size. It is completely invisible in clothes, you can easily forget that there is a phone in your pocket, so it does not feel like a constant burden. If you like compact models, then you will definitely fall in love with the 2017 A3.

Compared to Galaxy A5 2017

Display

In the younger model, a screen with HD resolution was installed; on such a diagonal, low resolution does not play a big role, the picture looks good. But for those who like to peer into the screen and distinguish PenTile, I will not recommend this screen, you will see its structure from a distance of ten centimeters, and from five centimeters you can accurately determine the “looseness” of the picture. It is clear that no one looks at the screen so close, but who cares? Ordinary people, not burdened with knowledge about PenTile, will simply say that this is a good screen that produces a nice picture, which, moreover, is customizable.

The specifications of this SuperAMOLED display are as follows: 4.7 inch, SuperAMOLED, HD, 312 ppi, auto brightness, auto brightness to suit your habits, color profiles, Corning Gorilla Glass 4, AlwaysOn Display.

For my taste, the screen quality is excellent for its class, it has a large margin of brightness in automatic mode, the display is well readable in the sun, just like in the model of the previous year (in S7 EDGE the screen has a higher brightness, as a result, it is even better in the sun).

The screen has an AlwaysOn Display option, that is, you can see application icons, clocks or pictures all the time, the screen does not drain the battery much, for 12 hours it is a couple of percent. Until now, this feature has not been massively available in the middle price segment, which noticeably distinguishes the 2017 A3 and puts it on a par with Samsung flagships.

Whatever one may say, the screen in this model is excellent for its positioning and capabilities, you don't need more. Given the scenarios of using the device (a minimum of heavy games with complex graphics as an example), this is the right choice.

Battery

The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 2350 mAh, fast charging is not supported, but a regular charger charges the battery in 1 hour 35 minutes. That is, there is no need for fast charging, due to the small capacity of the battery, the charging time is normal. Built-in wireless charging, which is the flagship models, is not here.

In mixed mode, the device lives quietly for two days with 3-4 hours of screen operation, data transfer in LTE and two hours of calls. It all depends on what and how you use, you can achieve better results, for example, 5-8 hours of screen time in two days of work, as well as less time.

Playing unconverted video in HD quality in MX Player at maximum brightness - up to 17 hours. This is an excellent indicator given the size of the battery, many Chinese show a comparable result on a 5000 mAh battery.

The operating time of the A3 2017 becomes its strength, even with a heavy load it will not work to discharge it faster than in a day, on average it is two days. Those who use only calls can easily count on 5-6 days of work, of course, it all depends on the operator and the number of these calls. But in general, we can state the fact that the operating time is a strong point of this model.

Traditionally, there is a power-saving mode, when the screen backlight, processor frequency are limited, in this mode, many will not experience problems with the operation of the device, but the operating time will increase by at least 20 percent. In the maximum power saving mode, everything on the screen is painted in gray colors, and the device, even with a small charge, can provide hours of operation.

Communication options

The work of GPS/GLONASS is excellent, a cold start takes about ten seconds, navigation works perfectly, there are no problems. By the way, this distinguishes A-brands from many Chinese companies, where the implementation of antennas is such that you can expect anything from typical functions.

Support for almost all necessary LTE frequencies is another strong point, here the device also shows its strengths (analogues in this price segment cannot boast of this, as a rule, there are savings on antennas).

Finally, the device has NFC, ANT+ support, which will appeal to those who use sports sensors. Bluetooth version 4.2.

If we talk about Wi-Fi, then 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac 2.4 + 5 GHz is used here, there is a repeater mode (distribution of a Wi-Fi signal to other devices as an access point).

The version is USB 2.0, but the USB Type C (1.0) connector is used, so fans of modern connectors will be happy, it's time for the rest to come to terms with the transition to the new standard.

Memory, RAM, performance

Samsung uses its own chipsets in the A-series models, which can be considered a plus, they are improving year by year. For example, in 2016 chipsets in the A-series were made at 28 nm, now it is 14 nm, which gives an increase in performance and operating time. Chipset in A3 2017 Exynos 7780, 8 cores up to 1.6 GHz (Cortex A53), Mali-T830 GPU.

In synthetic tests, this processor performed well. In real life, everything also works perfectly, you will not feel any shortcomings in performance, the model is on the level, and the safety margin is enough for a couple of years at least.

Built-in memory in the device is 16 GB (available 9.7 GB), memory cards can be up to 256 GB. RAM 2 GB, which is enough for most consumers for the eyes. And given the screen resolution, everything becomes very good, this solution is balanced, and there are no noticeable compromises.

Camera

The front camera is 8 megapixels (f / 1.9), as usual, there is no autofocus, so it's worth finding the distance from which the pictures are best taken, which is about half a meter, that is, an outstretched arm. The quality of the front camera is good, but do not expect anything special from it, after all, the main camera is better. There is a traditional improvement in skin color and tone, you can enlarge your eyes, and at the same time make your face thinner. The girls will definitely like these “improvements”.

The main camera is 13-megapixel (f / 1.9), of course, there is autofocus, as well as additional shooting modes, including PRO, but it differs from the flagships, since the camera is simpler. The camera on the A3 is simpler than on older models, don't expect much from it. But she copes with her work quite well: taking pictures of pages with text, capturing the world around her - all this can be done. But if you want to shoot beautifully for social networks, then look at the flagships or models above the class.

When recording video, the maximum is FullHD resolution and 30 frames per second.

Look at the examples of pictures and videos, I think they will all tell you about the quality of the camera.

Software

The model originally came out on Android 6.0.1, but many interface elements are similar to what we see in Android 7 and Clean UI on S7/S7 EDGE. I advise you to read about what appeared in Android 7, as soon this model will receive this version of the OS.

I will not describe the standard Android functions, you can read about them in a detailed review.

Unlike top models, there is a built-in FM radio, which looks like a nice bonus.

When using KNOX, you can install any program in duplicate, for example, install two WhatsApp messengers on one device and use them for each SIM card (two numbers, two messengers). You can even chat with yourself. Exactly the same trick can be done with any software, no phone allows you to simultaneously work with two instant messengers on the same device with different numbers. Today, many Chinese manufacturers offer something similar in their smartphones, but everywhere the implementation is different.

Impression

The vibrating alert is average, the volume of the ringer is also average - perhaps we would like to have more headroom, but the phone is still audible, and it is felt in pockets when vibrating. Rather, there is no reserve in terms of volume, but then whoever perceives this moment, the device cannot be called quiet.

There are practically no compact models on the market, keep in mind that Samsung has always been able to make its devices smaller than its competitors, just remember that 5.2 inches from Samsung is the body of many 4.7-4.9 inch models. So here, the A3 of 2017 turned out to be very compact, only one competitor immediately comes to mind - the iPhone SE. But the price of this compact phone is much higher with similar characteristics and 16 GB of memory, in Russia it costs 31,990 rubles. Design-wise, it's the exact opposite of the 2017 Galaxy A3. Plus, the iPhone SE is a camera, but there is no water protection, there is, of course, AlwaysOn Display, the operating time is the same or less.

Also, the Sony Xperia X Compact is made in a completely different style, the model is small, but extremely expensive (32-33 thousand rubles). Comparable battery life, slightly faster processor, better camera, no water protection and no AlwaysOn Display. This model definitely does not have any special advantage over the A3, which would cost 10,000 rubles. It is close to the iPhone SE in terms of price positioning.

If there were many competitors in the segment of 5-inch models for the 2017 A5, then there are practically no competitors for compact models of 4.7 inches and with small cases. The two main competitors are the iPhone SE and the Sony Xperia X Compact, but they cost significantly more. Sony will have an updated version of this smartphone, but the price difference will be even greater. Only large companies can afford to play in the market of compact models, and, unlike Samsung, they see such devices as models with super profits. In my opinion, this is the wrong approach, since a compact, decent smartphone cannot be prohibitively expensive, which proves the 2017 A3. For those who are looking for a compact model on Android, this device will be the preferred choice.

Comparisons with the 2017 A5 may be true, but here you get a larger body size, higher performance, higher screen resolution and about the same battery life in the older model. But you lose that very compactness. These are different worlds in terms of perception based on the size of the case, and this must be taken into account, everything else fades into the background.

The model of the previous season, namely the 2016 A3, is weaker in every sense: less battery life in any of the modes, lack of an AlwaysON screen and water protection, and no support for Samsung Pay. On the other hand, if you have such a phone and it works, then you should not change it for a new one. Wait another generation and then change. However, buying it now as a compact phone is worth it if there is no money for a new model (the previous one costs 17,990 rubles). Let me remind you that the price of A3 2017 is 22,990 rubles.

Bottom line: A3 2017 is great for those who are looking for a compact smartphone, which will focus on calls, instant messengers, web browsing, to a lesser extent on heavy games. As a second smartphone, this device is ideal, as it works for a long time and is compact. The model turned out to be successful, but compact phones remain in demand by a not very wide audience, so it’s not worth reading the A3 2017 for some huge sales, it plays only within the niche of compact devices.

Positioning

In 2014, the decline in sales of Samsung smartphones in the mid-range segment became noticeable, one of the main reasons was the very average characteristics compared to Chinese manufacturers, which made Samsung devices not very attractive with the same case materials and comparable chipsets. The company's strategy for 2015 has been completely revised, in particular, a large number of models will be abandoned, each price segment will present its own "heroes", devices with an optimal price / quality ratio. It would be a mistake to assume that the A-series was the result of a change in course, these are one of the last devices that were developed within the framework of the old strategy. The fact that today they are trying to squeeze them into a new positioning and show a change in course is quite logical and understandable, but this should not confuse us - the A series models appeared as a response to inexpensive iPhones, those models that came out a couple of years ago, but are sold as the most affordable iPhones. No other competitors were considered for this line, and therefore no emphasis was placed on performance across the entire market. Also, a very accurate characteristic of all devices created to fight Apple is the use of nanoSIM cards, they are not used in mass devices, but are used only in those devices that must compete directly with the iPhone. Recently, Samsung has released one such device - Samsung Alpha, it was the first device with a metal frame around the body. He was not expected to enter the mass segment and was considered quite niche in the company.

Unexpectedly, it turned out that this device has become massive and in demand on the market. I will specifically make a reservation that within the framework of my niche. It remains a mystery to me why many people saw in it a design that differs from other Samsung devices, although of all the differences I can only mention the metal frame around the case - outwardly it is a typical Samsung, it is extremely difficult to find differences.

In the A-series, the company will present three devices, two of them have already been announced, these are A3 and A5, A7 remained outside the first announcement. The difference between these models is that inside the filling is somewhat different, but the main difference is the screen size, in A3 it is 4.5 inches, in A5 it is 5 inches, in A7 it will be 5.5 inches. At the same time, the design of the case for all devices is absolutely the same, as well as the design, due to this they are combined into a series.

It seems very far-fetched to me that such products can attract iPhone buyers or do it in bulk, after all, Apple managed to create a separate piece of the market that does not accept replacement products, this is not a story about the same or better features, similar design and the like. The choice of iPhone is often irrational, it is the choice of the brand. And the creation of direct competitors for this product, as a rule, does not lead to sensible results. Another thing is that the A-series turned out to be quite interesting in terms of design, materials, but by no means cost and characteristics - this is a sort of iPhone for the Android market. And here many questions arise, since the cost of such solutions is quite high.

The positioning of the A-series can be described as simple smartphones with the latest version of Android for those who are looking for good case materials, but not maximum performance. Devices for one-handed operation, in many ways similar in positioning to conventional iPhones. Let's figure out together what is sensible in them, as well as what disadvantages are present.

Design, dimensions, controls

For a long time, buyers have been suggesting that a metal case is a premium material and they are willing to pay extra money for it. In many respects, the fashion for metal cases was introduced by the iPhone, but the same Samsung already had experience in the production of such devices, and real sales showed that the metal in the design is not decisive when choosing a phone. Moreover, in the presence of the same models with comparable characteristics, the one with a metal case was bought noticeably worse. All this forced not to go on experiments and not to produce such devices. However, in 2014, an increasing number of companies began to use metal in the construction of their devices, in particular, the frames around the case became metal (aluminum or stainless steel), and at this point, Samsung's lag became critical, since it was no longer one model, but many of those that are present on the Android smartphone market.

Samsung believes, and quite rightly, that the presence of a collapsible case is an advantage for the consumer - he can independently change the battery, comfortably install a SIM card. At the same time, a certain part of buyers is ready to sacrifice these advantages in order to get an all-metal case, and it is for such people that the A-series was released.

Compared to Samsung A5

The metal frame goes around the case, everything here is similar to Samsung Alpha or Note 4, the edges are exactly the same, they also play in the light. But the entire back panel is also made of metal, although it is painted over in the color of the case. It has several recesses for antennas, but they are not visible due to uniform shading. This is a conscious decision, since the same iPhone uses either a plastic insert (as on the iPhone 6) or an insert on the back panel, as in the iPhone 5/5s, which is knocked out of the design of the device. Samsung considered that the appearance of the device should be unified, and achieved this with this approach.

Color schemes for A3 are quite diverse - initially the devices appear in white, black, blue, golden and pink colors, later other options may appear. The white color has a pearly tint, it is not matte, it plays well in the light. An attempt to deliberately scratch it shows that scratches appear, but they are not visible unless you look closely.

The fact that Samsung decided to paint the sides of the device in the color of the body, not leave them entirely metal, has already caused idle fiction for Note 4, some people “saw” that it was plastic covered with foil, considered the 3.5 mm jack, which also saw plastic. As in Note 4, and in the entire A-series, this is an all-metal frame a few millimeters thick. There is no plastic here, the A3 also has a metal back, and it is quite durable and massive. The device will easily survive the fall, but I have not tried it for such a fashionable bend - with effort, any metal device can be bent, the only question is what kind of effort it will be. In A3, you have to try very hard to bend the device.

What is the point of making the phone case in the color of metal and showing it, I do not understand. On the streets, I have never met cars with metal bodies that were not covered with paint. Why this is required from the phone remains a mystery to me, especially since all metal phone cases are painted in one way or another, usually it is metal-like painting. It sounds funny, but the metal is painted to look like metal so that you have the appropriate impression. Samsung's approach to the A-series is quite understandable, the phones look very nice on the outside, and feel the same in the hands.

I'll start with a simple one - by squeezing the phone in your hands, you will not be able to achieve either a crunch or any backlash. Nothing. The assembly, as usual, is on top, and there is nothing to complain about. The dimensions of the phone are 130.1x65.5x6.9 mm, and the weight is 110 grams. Very compact, fits well in the hand.

The controls are traditionally located, the volume rocker is on the left side, and the on/off button is on the right side. There are also two slots for nanoSIM cards, in one slot there is also a combined holder for a microSD card. The device has two microphones, they are located at the ends. At the bottom there is a regular microUSB connector, as well as a 3.5 mm jack for a headset or headphones.

The front camera is located above the screen, there is also a light sensor, as well as proximity. Under the screen - two touch and one mechanical button.

Display

The weakest point of the A3 is the screen - 4.5 inches with qHD resolution, that is 540x960 pixels (245 dpi). Just because it's a SuperAMOLED that supports maximum power saving mode doesn't get rid of the issue of such a small display resolution. The only explanation I see is that the resolution of the 3.5-inch iPhone 4/4s screen is 640x960 pixels, and this model is tipped to compete with this device, with a number of reservations. The iPhone 4S 8 GB is still present and actively sold on the market, and the device from Samsung is its competitor.

Of course, in a modern phone of this price level, I would like to see at least an HD screen. The fact that the A3 uses a qHD-matrix, albeit SuperAMOLED, seems to me a mistake. On the other hand, for an ordinary consumer who uses the phone for calls, the Internet from time to time, and this permission is quite enough, the example of the iPhone proves this well. For more advanced users, this will obviously not be enough.

In terms of color rendering, picture quality, the screen in A3 is good, but not the best. Comparing it with the current generation of Samsung devices, you can see the difference, in many ways it is described by the difference in resolution. There are no complaints about the brightness, the picture is clear. When automatically adjusting the brightness of the backlight, you can see that it is not always the maximum, it can often seem dim. On the other hand, this level is optimal and provides a fairly long battery life.

Battery

The built-in Li-Ion battery has a capacity of 1900 mAh, which is quite a bit by modern standards. For example, the Galaxy Alpha has a 1860 mAh battery, but the chipset is made using 20 nm technology, although it is more powerful, eight-core. Here the chipset is 28 nm technology, but from Qualcomm, and it has less power. As a result, it appears that it can provide longer run times.

Video playback time is about 10.5 hours, which is typical for all devices from Samsung. With real use of the phone, you can achieve two days of confident work with an hour of calls, two dozen messages, a couple of hours of listening to music. With a very heavy load, the device will work for only one day, but for example, with the same load, the S5 will sit down at about one in the afternoon. The use of an optimized chipset makes itself felt, this is a new generation device in terms of improved runtime. Although it all depends on what and how you use it on it, how you set up all the parameters.

Full battery charging time is just under two hours. Fast charging technology, as in Note 4, is not supported here.

Memory, RAM, chipset and performance

In most markets, a model with LTE support will be presented, it is the highest in cost and is built on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 chipset - MSM8916, four A53 64-bit cores, frequency up to 1.2 GHz. This chipset is one of the best in the middle price segment, it is quite productive, while offering good performance for a reasonable price. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, the built-in memory is 16 GB, of which about 12 GB is available to the user. Memory cards are supported up to 64 GB, which will be enough for most.

There is an unusual feature in the A-series devices in that it is impossible to use two SIM-cards and a memory card at the same time. In the second slot, either a memory card or a SIM card can be installed, but not both at the same time. Therefore, you will have to choose what is more important for you - you should keep this in mind when you choose a device.

In synthetic tests, this chipset does not show maximum results, but this does not affect performance in any way, everything works quite well and quickly.

Of the pluses, I note that the chipset allows you to achieve a long operating time from a single charge, unlike the previous generation models.

Communication options

Everything is quite typical, USB version 2, there is support for NFC, Ant +, Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, the built-in LTE modem supports LTE Advanced Cat.4.

Camera

The front camera does not have autofocus, but has a resolution of 5 megapixels, which is not bad.

The main camera is 8-megapixel, it is similar in characteristics to the cameras that were in the flagships a couple of years ago, it produces good picture quality, as you can see for yourself.

Software

The device has the latest version of Android 4.4.4 with TouchWiz shell, it is also the latest version, as on the company's flagships. There are almost no differences from the same S5, so I refer you to the relevant part of the review.

Unlike top models, there is a built-in FM radio, which looks like a nice bonus.

But the phone lacks the apps that have become familiar to older models, for example, there is no S Health, which takes into account your steps, as well as physical activity. The kit contains almost no applications that the company gives with older devices, or subscriptions to services (the same Dropbox is not included in the kit). A fairly modest set of applications, which is understandable against the background of flagships, but it is not clear why there is, for example, a children's mode or the like. It looks as if the A-series exists somehow separately from the main backbone of Samsung models. For some, this can become a serious limitation, so it is better to know about it in advance. Otherwise, this is a typical device from Samsung, in which TouchWiz is slightly redesigned, since the screen does not allow you to implement all the chips - from an unpleasant note, I note the absence of quick launch icons in the curtain, which many are used to.

(6 ratings)

The Korean company Samsung adheres to its well-thought-out trend and releases new versions of its A-series smartphones every year. The names remain the same, only the year of issue changes.

The exact release date of the Samsung Galaxy A3 is October 31, 2014. Is it really good and is it worth buying, based on the realities of today? The Galaxy A3 review will answer this question.

Completion and packaging

The device came to the market in a beautiful blue cardboard box. The front panel contains a large letter A, and below - the full name of the smartphone. At the bottom of the box, the manufacturer printed a description of all the specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015). Package components:

  • Charger;
  • microUSB cable;
  • clip for a tray for two Nano-SIM-cards;
  • headset with microphone;
  • instructions with a warranty card (warranty is valid when purchased from an official Samsung store or a dealer store).

There are many color schemes of the device on the market (in Samsung, even non-flagship devices are always brightly and juicy). The Galaxy A3 is available in white, blue, navy blue, gold, pink and magenta.

Appearance and design

The front panel is painted to match the main body color of the device. The sides have a metallic sheen. This can be seen in the photo below:

Samsung Galaxy A3 metal side panels

In the center of the back panel is the main camera, LED flash, perforation area for the main multimedia speaker and the logo of the Korean manufacturer. The front camera, sensors, two backlit touch buttons and the main mechanical button, which performs the function of returning to the main desktop of the Galaxy A3, are installed in front.

The top end is equipped with a small hole for an additional microphone of the noise reduction system, and the bottom edge contains a metal headphone jack, a microUSB charging slot and a hole for the main conversational microphone. On the left side are the volume keys, and on the right are two trays and a power button.

The top end of the smartphone

The decision of the Samsung developers about the trays is not clear. In one, you can install a Nano-SIM card, and in the second, either a SIM card of the same format or a MicroSD memory card. It would be more practical to provide an opportunity to install a memory card in one tray, and a SIM card in the second one.

Overall, the design of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015) is good. The disadvantages include the main camera lens protruding slightly above the body and an unnecessary serial number at the bottom of the rear panel.

Despite the fact that the body is completely metal, the smartphone is light and weighs 110 grams. It is convenient for them to use with one hand, it is not slippery and not easily soiled - the device does not have to be hidden in immediately after purchase. The case size of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015) is 130.1 x 65.6 x 6.9 mm. This is a really compact device. The assembly of the gadget is excellent: even with strong pressure on the body and ends, no squeaks or backlashes are heard.

Lightweight clean smartphone design

Display

The front panel of the device from Samsung has a small display with a diagonal of 4.5 inches. Its resolution is qHD (not to be confused with QHD) or 540x960 pixels. With a dot density of 245 ppi, the screen does not grain, "burnt" pixels are not visible. Illuminated elements were also not found. The screen is made by technology. But the display can be attributed to the minuses, because for $ 250 at the end of 2014, I would like to get at least an HD matrix.

4.5" Super AMOLED display

Viewing angles are excellent, there are no complaints about them. Maximum brightness allows you to see the picture in conditions of intense lighting, be it studio or sunlight. Minimum brightness is also ok.

A3 touch screen supports multi-touch

Will be useful

The Korean manufacturer in the Galaxy A3 has preset display color settings, since AMOLED panels, as a rule, have increased saturation of green, blue and red colors (somewhere there is an overweight of one of them). Therefore, the modes help to improve color reproduction and not disturb the user's vision.

The glass reflects glare and provides protection from dirt, thanks to the applied layer of oleophobic coating.

Software

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015) runs on Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system. The manufacturer periodically releases updates for it. The company has preinstalled its latest version of Samsung TouchWiz software. It is also found on the flagship devices Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

Of the chips of the system, it is worth noting the presence of a built-in FM-radio module (it functions only with a connected headset or other headphones without a microphone). The radio works adequately and provides good reception of stations.

Of the shortcomings of this device, it is worth noting the lack of a heart rate sensor, and, accordingly, the S Health program. If in the flagships the functionality of the system was wider, then The Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015) does not have the Kids Mode app and other useful and interesting features.

note

There are a huge number of themes that can be downloaded from a special store. They change not only the wallpaper and some other elements, but also the icons and the entire interface.

The shell works quickly. It is one of the most stable and popular systems not only in Samsung, but in the entire mobile market.

Sound

The main multimedia speaker is located on the rear panel of the device. In this regard, the protruding lens of the main camera allows you to slightly raise the device above the table, which ensures efficient operation of the speaker: the sound from the main speaker is not muffled or distorted. This allows not only not to miss an important call, but also to listen to music with comfort.

Speaker and microphone

There are both low and high frequencies. The volume reserve is sufficient. The main point is the purity of sound. At maximum volume, it does not "wheeze" and is not distorted. The speaker can be attributed to the merits of the "middling". The sound in the headphones is almost the same quality, but the bundled one is not the best.

The earpiece is also loud and clear. Does not "wheeze" during a long conversation. Thanks to the additional microphone of the noise reduction system, the interlocutor hears you without interference or unnecessary background sounds.

Performance

It is worth reading the description of the characteristics of the hardware component of the Samsung Galaxy A3 (2015). The Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 or MSM8216 quad-core single-chip platform is responsible for performance. Four cores of the Cortex-A53 type operate at a frequency of 1.2 GHz. The Qualcomm Adreno 306 processor is responsible for the graphics. Even for the beginning of 2015, the hardware is the most budget on the market. Other devices already had a Snapdragon 600-series chipset on board, but the company apparently decided to save on this moment.

Built-in storage and RAM sizes are 16 GB and 1 GB- also not the best indicator. Given that about 11 gigabytes are available, and the memory card is installed in the combo slot, the amount of ROM is a minus. On 16 GB of internal storage, you can install several dozen applications, several games, but there is not enough space for music. 1 GB of RAM is also “not serious”, because modern applications can take up 75% of the total.

Since the hardware is budget, it scores 21484 points in the Antutu Benchmark program. This means that "heavy" games can be played on low graphics at 25-30 frames per second. If you switch to the lowest Presets, then the figure will be 35-42 FPS. The low performance in Antutu is also due to the fact that the potential of the processor is not fully revealed due to the presence of the Android 4.4.4 operating system, which does not “understand” 64-bit crystals.

Benchmark version 5.6.1

All networks work without any problems. There is support for NFC, and Wi-Fi, which can operate in the 2.4 GHz band. Embedded module LTE is capable of downloading data at a maximum speed of 150 Mbps, and the 3G module at 42.2 Mbps. Mobile communication and navigation system work without interference even indoors.

Camera

The main camera shoots at a resolution of 8 megapixels. Front - 5 MP. Pictures in good lighting conditions are of high quality, without various artifacts and noise. Autofocus is fast, and the dual flash allows you to take clear pictures at night.
